I am hoping someone can help. I just found a pile of clothes I had ordered from Old Navy in June. I was going to return it today, however I see I had a 45 day limit! Yes, I know I am disorganized, but I do wish they would have put this on the receipt and not just online.

Has anyone ever returned items to Old Navy without a receipt? I realize I'll lose money, but at least I would get the "sale" price on the items now. Since I can't use the receipt due to it being over 45 days, I was going to return them as gifts/without the receipt. The items are obviously brand new, still in the bags from the catalog order.

Would they give me a store credit? Or am I just out of luck?:confused3

I think I'd go with the "these were gifts with no receipt." I believe I did that when my SIL got some clothes for my DS. She had just had a baby, and got him the wrong size and forgot to put in the gift receipt. I ended up exchanging the outfits for the right size, but I didn't have the receipt.

What you stated is what they will probably do. I work at The Children's Place and that is pretty much what we do; we give the current price for the clothing, which is usually significantly cheaper that what was originally paid, in the way of a store credit, usually issued on a gift card. Good luck.

Thanks! I know they don't have another size because when I first received the items we went to the store to exchange them for the size...but the stores didn't have any other size. I will give it a try and see what happens.
Lesson learned! However...I do wish they would put right on the receipt...returns must be made within 45 days!
Thanks

I work for Gap(same Co. as Old Navy). The stores have longer return policys than online. The stores can't override things from online. I always tell customers to call online to see what they could do for them. It's worth a shot! Good luck!

I would honestly take it back with the reciept. Just be honest and hopefully the 45 days will be waved. I think it all matters what kind of personality you have when you walk in. If that doesn't work I'd just say no thanks, and come back another time and try the no reciept work.

I know ON has changed alot with thier return policy. I just recently had to return a tank, lost my reciept. Well the cashier told me that they would gladly return it but since I did not have my reciept the credit would be mailed to me unless I had the credit card it was purchased on and they could look it up that way. Thankfully I had my CC so it was quick and easy. Either way I would have been fine since it was my fault for losing the reciept..Well real story was it wasn't lost.. DH threw it away with another tank that I had planned on returning. He saw the bag hung up on the door handle and saw me cleaning and figured the bag was just my trash from cleaning.. boo. I was made but oh well.

My sister works at ON and I believe the no reciept policy dictates that they will mail you a credit for the lowest price in the last XX days. I know it involves mailing you something, might be a check or it might be a store credit, I can't remember.

Wait, wait ... there is a store policy that says they would take clothes back without a receipt but they wouldn't take clothes back with a receipt that was 46 days old?

I highly doubt it. Every store in the world with a 45 day policy and faced with an expired receipt will say, "we'll have to give you store credit".

I wouldn't do the returns without a receipt unless you are prepared for low return amounts. If you return with the receipt and it's over the 45 days, you will get a credit in the amount on the receipt. Without the receipt, you will also get a credit, but it will be for the current sale price of the items. So if you have a pair of pants that you paid $30 for but they are currently marked down to $5.99, that's all you're getting.

Yep, and that's one reason stores have after Christmas sales. So they don't have to give equal store credit back.

I speak from experience when I say Old Navy has a "jerky" return policy! I had a pair of jeans that I wanted to return and I miscalculated the 60 day policy by one day. The girl at the register told me there was nothing that could be done - no return, no exchange, no store credit. I asked her what the policy was if I didn't have a receipt, and she said they snail mail you a merchandise credit for the lowest recent sale price (I think I actually ended up making a few dollars). She reluctantly did it that way, and a few weeks later I got a credit in the mail.

So I wouldn't take the receipt and just expect to not get as much back, but if you're not going to wear them, you come out ahead at this point. And be prepared to wait for the merc credit to come in the mail.

They have a policy not to approach anyone who they think is stealing. All they can do is follow them around the store, but they can not call the police or directly accuse them of stealing. The return policy is a response to people taking stuff off the rack and "returning it." Crazy I know, but my sister says they have "customers" who fill up carts full of stuff, cuss at all the employees for following them around, walking out with the stuff without paying and there is nothing they can do about it.

Wanted to add that I just read this...

Can I return any online purchase to a store? No, certain items are not eligible for store returns and must be returned using our easy mail return process. These items are indicated as "Return by Mail Only" on the product page and have a return type of "Mail Only" in your shopping bag and on your invoice.

So make sure your items aren't marked as "return by mail only" - if they are, I'd say you're probably out of luck on those.

That's ridiculous. Why can't they call the police? Is it Old Navy's policy not to? :confused3 Last time I checked, shoplifting was illegal, and they should be able to call the police to handle the situation.

If that's how Old Navy chooses to handle it (by not calling the police) and it's really such a widespread problem as people pushing cartloads of stuff out the door, then each store should hire a security guard. Otherwise, it's hard to feel bad for Old Navy, and it's annoying that we (legit consumers) have to pay the price for a handful of losers.

Earlier this year I brought in an online return not realizing it was 45 days vs 60 days. They were able to give me a store credit for what I paid, but did not put it back on my Old Navy card. Good luck!

I will let you know what happends. I have the catalog receipt and the tags are still on it....but the tags say...oldnavyonline. So....I'm not sure what will happen. The barcodes are on the bags the clothes came in. There are no bar codes on the tags attached to his clothes. I'll have to try today. I do not see anywhere on the receipt where it says "return by mail only." But...I do see on the back of the receipt where it says to return within 45 days! Darn.

Try it with the receipt. It proves what you paid for it. YOu may not get cash back, but a store credit for your full price.

I did the same thing at TJ Maxx (not online) returning something. They gave me a store gift card for my full return value to use for soemthing else.

Yeah, it's policy not to call the police. If a customer reports it, they can encourage that customer to call the police. This is according to my sister, who is a floor manager there. She says the casual shoplifter will stop with some attention from the clerks, like "Oh, these pants would look great with that sweater you were looking at" wink wink. She agrees it is crazy- but it is partly for their safety and partly for customer service.

Its the same policy as most other stores with the shoplifting issue. Only a qualified LP person can stop a shoplifter. This is due to the huge liability of wrongly accusing someone

After reading your thread this morning, I decided to try to return some things I bought online from ON back around Memorial Day. These two things were still in the individual plastic bags from the warehouse also. Since I am a Gap credit card customer, the salesperson first tried to find my transaction thru that. Since I had misplaced my CC right after I ordered that stuff, I had to get a new CC # issued to me. Long story short, I am getting a check mailed to me for one item, and the other was just online only, so I just kept it because she couldn't give me a dollar amount for it. So that was worth it, better than giving it away to somebody!

YES!!! They don't take clothes back just past the 45 days. I have had this problem with the Gap too. Forgot about something we bought for spring break & put it aside. Remembered it later and they would only give me the lowest sales price EVEN WITH A RECEIPT since it was 47 days!!!!!!!!!!!! I lost a lot of money and was so angry I just traded it for something else and vowed not to go back there. I know it was my own fault, but really don't like companies that don't give an inch -- I was going to buy something else!!

Most stores will give you what you paid for the item with the receipt, but not ON/Gap. I really dislike that.
