We stayed at ASM in 1998 and had a 6 & 8 yr old. We enjoyed our stay there but may have a chance to stay at my friend's time share at Old Key West. The kids will be 11 & 13. How is it for the kids??

I have stayed at a number of Disney resorts, but never both OKW or any AL (we have stayed away from AS on purpose.) I will stay at OKW someday because we just joined DVC and am looking forward to it.

It seems to me that they don't even compare. OKW is a delux and home away from home resort and AM is a value resort. You get a lot more for because of that. OKW has a ton to do for kids, fun themeing and you will like it much better. The kids are happy enough going to the parks and all the pools at Disney are great.

The only down side is once you do OKW, you won't want to go back to any off the AS resorts. Espeically if the OKW room is a 2 bedroom or more room!!!!!
:)

OKW for sure, give me a few minutes to ge some pictures and info.

I haven't stayed at the AS yet, but I wouldn't hesitate to take my kids to OKW. The rooms are huge, the resort is gorgeous, we loved it.

Thank you for all your replys. The pictures were great and really make me want to be there. Thanks for taking the time to get them to me.

I HAVE THE TIME SHARE AT OKW...ITS GREAT.. FOR ALL AGES AS WELL. JUST B/C IVE BEEN THERE FOR 4TH OF JULY AND THEY DO A WHOLE BIG POOL PARTY AND BBQ, DJ AS WELL. ITS ALOT OF FUN. THE ATMOSPHERE IS WONDERFUL. THERES ALOT OF ACTIVITIES THAT THE KIDS CAN ENJOY. THERES ALSO A PLACE TO RENT BIKES, BASKETBALLS, TENNIS RACKETS, PADDLE BOATS, AND ETC.

we've stayed at both...
no comparison...
we stayed at the OKW last year...
2 weeks in a 2 bedroom villa.....1300 square feet of space!!!
my kids were 16 and 14 at the time and absolutelly loved it...
it has a real resort feel to it...
there are activities in community hall (games and arts and crafts that my kids still love to do)...
you can rent bikes and peddalboats...and there's a nice pontoon boat that takes you to downtown disney....i felt like a millionaire with my own private boat captain!
and it's just so beautiful and peaceful there...with the golf course all around....
and the CMs are SUPER friendly.....waving hi.....smiling....
every single time you drive your car by the guard at the entrance, he waves and says "welcome home"....
little things to be sure, but it all makes for a wonderful feeling and a wonderful vacation...
old key west is definitely one of our favorites at WDW.....without a shadow of a doubt.....

Our kids loved our stay at the OKW resort when they were your childrens ages. i would go there. ASMo seems to be better for the younger set. Our kids would love to own DVC points but with college coming we are not going to chance it right now. Oh I wish I could though.

I MEAN IM 18YRS OLD AND THATS LIKE MY 2ND HOME AS I CALL IT.. MY FRIENDS SEE PICS OF IT ALL THE TIME AND ARE LIKE WOW THATS BEAUTIFUL. I WANNA GO!! SO U DEF WANT TO GET THE CHANCE TO STAY THERE. AND WHEN YOU DO ULL FEEL THE LOVE AND HAPPINESS THAT WE ALL BEEN STATING ABOUT OKW.

is the july 4th bash an annual party or was it just for that year? we will be there then this year and this sounds fun.

THEY SHOULD DO IT AGAIN I DONT SEE WHY NOT. ITS NOT JUST THAT RESORT BECAUSE I HAD ALSO STAYED AT PORT ORLEANS ONCE FOR 4TH OF JULY AND THEY HAD A HUGE BBQ AND POOL PARTY. SO ITS MAINLY EVERYWHERE..HOPE U ENJOY UR TRIP THOUGH.. AND ALSO THE FIREWORKS ARE AWESOME AT THE PARKS... THEYRE A LITTLE LONGER THAN USUAL ESP ON JULY 4TH... BUT I WENT TO MK SO IM NOT SURE WHAT THE OTHER PARKS ARE LIKE BC THEY WERE TAPING THE FIREWORKS FOR TV...

Of course I have to say go for OKW, but I will give you a different viewpoint. If you stay at ASM, it will be either much cheaper or you could stay much longer. If your family doesn't spend much time at the resort, I would actually recommend ASM over OKW. OKW is a home-away-from-home resort, which is ideal for families who would want to stay in their rooms a bit. With 11 and 13 year old children, I have a feeling they would want to be on the go the whole time. Like I said earlier, it is a different viewpoint (but I would still choose OKW).

If you are looking for a "pool experience" to go along with Old Key West, you might want to re-think. The best thing I can say about the main pool at OKW is that it has water--. More excitement may be had in your whirlpool tub in the room---.

I JUST LOVE THE WHOLE ATMOSPHERE AT OKW. THE EMPLOYEES TREAT THEIR GUESTS SO NICELY. AND ALWAYS SAYS HELLO AND SMILES WHENEVER U PASS THEM..

moderate Resorts do not attract to m at al lfor some reason i do not know.. maybe it is ebcause of its location but i would pick the all stars over Old Key West any day.

ContempoSMT- I don't know if this would change you opinion at all or not, but OKW is not moderate. It is a Home Away From Home resort which are occasionally even more expensive than Deluxe and some have excellent location.

I AGREE WITH EDDIEWELLS...OKW IS ALOT NICER LIKE HOME PLACE THAN ALL STAR. IVE STAYED AT ALL STAR YEA ITS CHEAPER BUT U GET MORE FROM OKW...

When Disney Vacation Club (now Old Key West) originated it was classifed by Disney as a Deluxe Resort. In later years, they created the designation of the "Home Away From Home". Take a look at the pricing --- it is far from a moderate.

We stayed at the ASMovies back in 2000 and loved the resort. Much magic and a delightful resort, bus service was grand. Alot of people say the rooms are small but we found them to be fine.

That being said, we've stayed at OKW for the first time and simply fell in love with the resort. It made me sad that we weren't actual disney club members because everyone we passed (cm's that is) would always say, "welcome home" or what have you. That was definitley the most friendly resort we've ever been at and we've been at a lot of the resorts from deluxe, mod's and values.

The rooms at OKW are absolutely humongous!! We were in a one bedroom and the master bedroom and bathroom were incredible! What a room! The front room living area and the balcony were also incredible as well as the kitchen. I also like the fact that you can park right out of your buidling if you have a car (unlike other home aways like Boardwalk and Wilderness Lodge).

When we were there we took the DVC tour and I decided for 100% sure that if I were to join the "club" I would buy an OKW resale, BWV and WL are completely small if you ask me. Those were the rooms you view on the tour at Boardwalk, a model of the BW and a model of the WL are there. I mean they are literal shoeboxes compared to the rooms at OKW. ANd the balconies at the BW and WL are incredibly tiny - I mean you can maybe "stand" out there and barely fit a chair out there - not at OKW, you have a whole table and four chairs and room to walk all around! It's just an incredible place :)

Don't get me wrong - the ASMovies is a great place for the price - I've got nothing negative to say about the place but good things! However if you "pay" to stay at the OKW you will pay pretty hefty prices even with the AP discounts. If you can rent points from an owner that's the best scenario - ie try to get them at a good rate such as $7 or $8 per point and you're doing great!!

If you can stay free that's even better! We stayed free and you can't beat that!! ;)
