Hi Disboarders,
Does anyone have experience with staying in an Old Key West grand villa and carrying a wheelchair and/or mobility
scooter up the outdoor stairs? I have carried a wheelchair upstairs before, however, it would be helpful to know the experiences of those who may have done this in the past.
Thanks, in advance, for your replies.
Kind regards,
Jim
Hi, Jim.
I don't have specific experience doing what you want to know, but is it possible to call WDW and request a first floor Old Key West grand villa.
I don't know your dates, but maybe you could check with
DVC Member Services and change your reservation to an ADA Old Key West grand villa which is on the first floor.
Have you taken your wheelchair or mobility scooter up the stairs before?
I used to use a mobility scooter and took it apart to place it in my car trunk. I got to the point where I couldn't do it again. It became too difficult for me.
And just speaking for myself, back then, I would never rent a room where I would have to use stairs.
If you don't have a choice speaking of carrying your wheelchair or mobility scooter u the stairs, I would find out the weight of the wheelchair or mobility scooter to see if you could lift it or if you have other family members can lift, carry or drag it up the stairs.
A manual wheelchair can be folded and pulled up the stairs one step at a time with the wheels easing the load.
Some mobility scooters can be taken apart into the seat, batteries, front tiller section, and the rear wheel section that usually contains the motor (usually the heaviest section.

I am assuming you will have at least two able-bodied family members to help you.
It might be possible for those two to carry the whole mobility scooter up the stairs.
I assume the person requiring the wheelchair or mobility scooter can walk up the stairs. If that is the case and you travel by car just leave it in the trunk.
If not using a car, plead your case to the OKW manager if he has suggestions.
Maybe you can explain your situation and request permission to leave the item at the front desk area somewhere to be recharged overnight (every night). And a golf cart transportation back to your room.
Or ask permission to leave your wheelchair or mobility scooter near your stairs (resorts require you not to leave this equipment outside your room).
If you are given permission, make sure it is near an electric outlet. And always take your key with you and leave a visible identification on it just in case a cast member sees it and doesn't move it. A manager explanation letter would be better.
I know what I'm suggesting may not be approved, but hopefully, the manager can perform some magic to move you to the first floor somehow.
I apologize for the lengthy response.
