Old Epcot ticket question...

Hi all...my FIL was telling my wife this weekend that he found an old ticket that his mother had bought at WDW sometime in the late 1970's. He was asking if it could be upgraded and used today. I asked if it was the kind with the A, B, C, D, E ticket media. He said no and told me that it was a ticket that was purchased to help pay for construction cost of Epcot and it some kind of wording about being used for Epcot on it. I told him that I'd never heard of that kind of ticket before. Have any of you and do you have any idea if this would have some type of collector value now? Thanks!

Greg

I really don't know what the value is or how to find out the value but...

1. You can try to sell it on eBay and people bidding on it will probably bring the price close to its present collectors' value.

2. You can estimate its admission value at fifty dollars (about the cost of a day's admission to Epcot) times the number of days it was good for.

3. You can, on your next WDW visit, try to exchange it at no charge for a modern magnetic stripe admission ticket with the same number of days on it. Ask for the old ticket itself back as a souvenir, they will stamp "void" in big red or black letters on it. This is the best choice since you can still sell it on eBay.

(I am not sure whether ticket exchanges are allowed for totally unused tickets but if a free exchange is denied, just keep the ticket in a clean envelope or stamp album and save it for your children for souvenir value only.)

I absolutely do not recommend using its value towards a hopper pass with more days, or an annual pass, it probably has only about fifteen dollars' worth of trade in value for that purpose.

As far as I know, the ticket books with A, B, etc. coupons were not utilized at Epcot, Disney had changed over to the "pay one price" park admission only ticket system with no individual ride tickets by the time Epcot opened (1982).

If you have the ticket media that included A,B,C,D, E tickets, the whole booklet, including the admission and transportation ticket must be present and intact to exchange if for other ticket media. Individual tickets of that type may be exchanged at cost, which will be explained to you at the Guest Relations window.

If the ticket was a one day, 3 day, or more, they can be exchanged for like tickets with the current magnetic strip with the amount of days that you have remaining. You will have to take it to a Guest Relations window at any park, or Downtown Disney to find out how many days it is worth, and what type of today's ticket corresponds to it. Then they can work their magic, and you will have a current ticket.

Without a picture, or better description of the piece, I can only think that your FIL has an EPCOT Pre-Opening Commemorative ticket.

Measures approx 8 3/4" by 3 3/4" not including the stub. Ryman-esque artwork has Monorail on left, with Spaceship Earth in Center. Came in a silver foil cardboard envelope with EPCOT embossing.

This piece has a copyright date of 1981, so it probably was not available in the late 70's. It usually sells for under $10.00 or "No Bids" on eBay. Search EPCOT ticket for a picture.

If this is not what FIL has, please give us a pic or more details...

Yeah I think this is what it is. I did the ebay search and had my wife look at the pictures that came up. She said she was pretty sure that was it. FIL is 100 miles away and is digitally challenged, so getting him to take a picture and email would be way too complicated! I'll look at it next time we go home to confirm. So if they're no bidding or selling for $10 on ebay, I guess he'd be better off to try and trade it in for a new ticket. Thanks!

Sounds like the genuine thing !!:)

I am a Disney collector and I have 5 (each) Opening Day Commerative Park Tickets from the WDW MK, EPCOT, MGM and AK.

On another forum this week someone sold a 1 day PH, and the bidding went up to $90. on Ebay. Goes to show ya what some people dont know! :crazy2:

Guess if you wanted to trade it in thats up to you. I would try to find a collector first who would appreciate it. :D

Think I would put it in the classified of the FantasyLine Express, which is a Club for Disneyana Enthusiasts: www.nffc.org

Best of Luck whatever you decide!!

I have two of them that I purchased back in 1981. I have them both framed (along with their silver envelopes - stubs intact). The entire ticket measures 11-3/4" long by 3-3/4" wide. I imagine that they'll be worth something someday. Until then, it's still a pretty cool souvenir of the time.

For the life-of-me, I can't remember what I paid for them but, I'm pretty sure that I purchased them at the Fort Wilderness Guest Relations on the day we were leaving to drive home from our 1981 Summer Vacation. The price is listed on the back of the stub but, like I said, I have them framed and don't want to take the frames apart right now to find out. The front of the stubs on mine read exactly as follows:

"THREE-DAY
WORLD ADVENTURE
Allows one
ADULT
the following for three days:

Unlimited admission to
WALT DISNEY WORLD EPCOT Center
and Magic Kingdom

Unlimited use of transportation within the
WALT DISNEY WORLD Vacation Kingdom

Unlimited use of all EPCOT Center and
Magic Kingdom attractions (except
Shootin' Gallery, Discovery Island and
River Country)."

Then it's 6-digit serial number is on the bottom (in silver).

The large part of the ticket has a yellowish/orangish artist's rendering of EPCOT with Monorail Orange zooming by on the left-hand side (note of trivia: the "zoom" markings show that it's traveling in the wrong direction around Spaceship Earth). The upper-right corner has (in silver):
"Walt Disney World
EPCOT
CENTER
Opening October 1, 1982
"
The bottom of this portion has the corresponding, 6-digit serial number (also in silver) and, in the lower-right corner are the words (in silver):
"SPECIAL EDITION
COMMEMORATIVE TICKET
"

I'm thinkin' that, back then, they only sold 1-day, 2-day & 3-day tickets. If I remember correctly, they advertised that "it would take at least 3 days to see all the attractions at both parks".

Editied to add: I just checked e-Bay and the tickets without the stub (obviously) aren't worth the paper they're printed on ($1 or less). One person has one listed (just like mine) WITH the stub intact for $295.00.
IF this is a valid price, I sure wouldn't use that ticket for park admission (if I were you).

:sunny:
