Old enough to remember when it was "allowed" to throw marshmallows to polar bears?

...at the zoo?
I am.

Mikeeee

They stopped because it made the bears difficult to find.;)

I remember! Even as a kid I thought that was a weird food option for a polar bear!

I'm in my 40's and I don't remember it ever being allowed to throw anything at any animal in the zoo. I remember particular sections of a zoo where you could buy food in gumball machines and feed the animals, but other than that area there were always many signs at the exhibits telling everyone "Don't feed the animals".

I do.

Thank God most Zoos are more concerned these days about the welfare of their animals and no longer just think of them as "things" on display.
With proper nutrition and enrichment their lives are much healthier and happier.

Yes it is good they are much more well cared for if they must be in captivity.

there is a sign at the old bear grotto at Brookfield Zoo, Chicago. It says:
"our Bears do not hibernate"

then it goes on to explain...

"bears only hibernate when their food supply is very low. Since we do not starve our bears, they never hibernate"

I do..although I think they we grizzly's or black bears...not polor. The marshmallows came in an ice cream cone.

Yeah Mikeeeee I remember. There was nothing like going to Brookfield on a hot summer day and feeding the animals.

I'm "old" - very old - LOL - and I never heard of that before.. Interesting bit of trivia.. :goodvibes
