Old dollar bills

Hello, Hope someone can help!

We're off to Orlando in a few days time and going through our holiday money I've noticed we have some very old bills including a 100 dollar note series 1981, 50 dollar notes from 2001, 20 dollar bills from 1985 and 1 dollar notes from 1988.

Are they still legal tender? I have about 1000 dollar's worth in notes from the 1980's and 1990's

LOL, I've got some Silver certificate bills, but I wouldn't spend 'em.

If you had bills from the 1800's they would still be legal tender, they would be worth more as collector items than as cash, but still legal to use.

Anything since 1958 are all federal reserve notes.

Money doesn't expire....unless it says confederate states of america......



Now if you have some from like 50 years ago or more, it might have some historical value...but other than that anything in good condition is legal tender.

Yes sometimes, when the Bank of England changes the design of the note, the old design is legal tender for a while (usually about 1-2 years) then shops etc will stop taking them and you can only use the new design notes. However if you did have an old design note the banks will swap them for you.

As noted, over here it's "once a dollar bill, always a dollar bill".

Our currency can be no older than 1971 due to decimalisation when our currency totally changed! Strange really when our country is so old in history but our currency used today is not even 40 years old.

My sisters, on the other hand, had no trouble spending my dad's Mercury dimes on milk in school. My dad wasn't too happy.

You could register them with www.wheresgeorge.com and spend them and hope someone else will track them. Interesting to see where your money travels. I have registered a handfull but only had someone report back on one of them. I have gotten 4 or 5 bills with wheresgeorge.com written on them and I report in on those. Just kind of interesting; especially for kids.
