We just returned from a 6 night stay in a 2 bedroom at OKW. This was our first trip staying DVC. Our group included myself, my DH, DN-7, DM, and my inlaws.

The Good:
I enjoyed the decor and style of the resort. I liked how calm and quiet it was. The golf course and landscaping were really nice. The Hospitality House and main pool area were very nice. The new slide is GREAT! I liked it as much as the volcano slide at the Poly. We didn't notice the main pool being overly crowded....The quiet pool was really nice too. I loved the setting of the one near our building (South Pointe section), it overlooked the water.

The room size was great. We had plenty of room to spread out and keep our stuff. The patio/balcony was really nice too, with the ceiling fan. I especially enjoyed having the huge split bathroom and the washer and dryer in the unit. Our unit was in good repair, so no problems there (we were in 5632).

The Bad:
I don't think any of these things were necessarily terrible, but they were things we did not like. The resort was huge, which wasn't too big of a problem. However, I didn't like the way the busses had to wind through the parking lots. It took forever. The busses came fairly frequently, but I hated how they have the bus stops set up at this resort. I wish they would be set up more like POR or CBR.

I checked in around 4 on Sunday and there were huge lines. It took about 45 minutes to check in. The CM mentioned my requests, but they were not able to grant any of them except non-smoking (which shouldn't be a request but a guarantee in my opinion). Our building ended up being fine (right next to bus stop and a quiet pool) but it was further from the hospitality house than I would of liked.

I also was a bit disappointed with the room decor. I thought the grounds and buildings were nice, but I was expecting a bit more Disney inside. You know, Mickey's hidden in the bedspreads or in the curtains or something like that. I couldn't find anything. It is a small detail, but something I always enjoy at the Disney resorts.

The Ugly:
I was thoroughly enjoying our first DVC stay, and OKW until the incident.....the squirrel incident. If you heard hysterical screaming about 10:30 p.m. on 6/21, I apologize.

We had come back from Downtown Disney and were coming into the Villa. My MIL and Niece went into the bedroom to put their packages away when they started screaming and jumped on the beds. I flying squirrel came scampering out of their room into the living room. I jumped up on the couch and my mom jumped up on the coffee table and the critter was running around (probably scared him half to death). I was trying to get my husband to open up the patio door and shoo him outside, but the squirrel ran under the dishwasher.

I am deathly afraid of rodents, so this was a nightmare for me. I barricaded myself in the bedroom while my FIL called the front desk. Eventually, an on call Disney Pest Control person came and tried to get the squirrel out with mace, but he wouldn't come out. They said he was coming in through an outside vent and came through the drywall where the dishwater pipes go through. They plugged the hole into our room and said they would flush him out and fix the vent in the daytime. I was told all this, as I stayed barricaded in our room the rest of the night.

The pest control person said this was highly unusual, they usually only get calls for the campground.....not usually the resorts except for the occasional lizard. We could hear him crawling around in the wall that night, but we didn't hear him after that, so I am not sure how the fixed the problem. Squirrels don't bother me too much, as long as they aren't in my living quarters!

Yikes, that squirell incident would have freaked me out too! :earseek:

I would have freaked also. It sounds like we were in the area where you were when we were there the beginning of June. It was nice but I did miss being by the HH and main pool.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm laughing hysterically at the Flying Squirrel incident. Mostly because I know realize how I must have looked last month when we came back to BCV and saw a little garter snake. That's how we "freaked". One person's snake is another's squirrel!

The poor thing was probably scared to death! By the way, I love the picture in your post, the look on the dogs face is priceless!

if squirrels scare you don't move to the South. they are all over the place here.

I can put up with squirrels - but boy do I hate possums. raccoons aren't fun either....the things that will follow your cat inside.

OKW has alot of wildlife.

Did you see the Eagles - they are in that section.

I suspect you'll find that at any DVC resort on a Sunday afternoon the vast majority of the time. Sunday undoubtedly the busiest check-in day due to the lower weekday points.

COme to think of it, South Point is where we have seen the most wildlife at OKW too. Only once where it was squirrels, and they were baby ones playing in the palm tree near the bus stop. I have often been a bit frieghtened to think that there MIGHT be a gator in the canal!

Thanks for your report. The squirrel incident was a funny read but sorry you had to put yourself in confinement for the evening to feel safe.

Glad you had a good trip overall!

It's a good thing you didn't stay in Bldg. 11-14. When we did a couple of years ago, there was a cougar of some kind sleeping in the sun. I couldn't get to HH fast enough!! It was gone by the time pest control arrived, though. Fortuneately, he wasn't inside the building, like your squirrel was. Wild life is wonderful, but not inside your villa...

I guess with all that screaming, it was hard to tell if the beds were squeaky.... :teeth:

Sorry to hear that you were confined to the bedroom due to the flying squirrel. Personally, I think they are adorable!

I'm not happy to hear that they used mace on the poor little guy. We have had a few in our house over the years and have always managed to catch them in a Have-a-Heart (live) trap using sunflower seeds as bait. Then we let them go outside.

Now snakes are another matter altogether! I would never harm one, but if I never crossed paths with another one ever again that would be fine by me.

We had a family of flying squirrels in our house a year ago. The were up all night in the attic and walls. We hired a pest control guy. He called his business "The critter gitter." He got about seven of them.

Whoah on the squirell incident ! That had to be unnerving. We had a squirell get in our house once and it scampered up my leg. Really tore me up with it's sharp claws. But it was really just as scared as I was. The only critters we've had in our OKW villa was a frog once and some lizards.

I also was a bit disappointed with the room decor. I thought the grounds and buildings were nice, but I was expecting a bit more Disney inside. You know, Mickey's hidden in the bedspreads or in the curtains or something like that. I couldn't find anything
I have the the Field Guide to Hidden Mickey's by Steven Barrett. OKW has the hidden mickey cut-out heads on the balcony/porch fence as well as the fences at the general store and in the lobby area. Also the pathway leading to the parking lot near bldg 36 had a 3 shell imprint on the ground. The book states there are more on other pathways around the resort.
I know we stayed at BWV in '03 and didn't notice any hidden mickeys in the room there either ? The book also does not mention them being in the room though they are in the lobby and around outside areas of the resort. There's one at the BW Bakery.
Now I know they were on the bedspread at the VWL. I'll bet there could be others there. The book doesn't even mention VWL or BCV. Anyone else know of any hidden mickeys at DVC resorts ?
Thanks for the TR :flower:

Ohhh...I LOVE sqirrels. I hope he wasn't hurt. Too bad it wasn't my room...I would've been really excited by my "visitor". Bless it's little heart!!!

Yes, you can't be too careful around squirrels!!
Most of them must be what -- 11 feet long, and have huge--razor sharp teeth!!

Thank godness WDW "covers up" most of all the bad things that happens on property. If we really knew how many guests have been killed or maimed by squirrels, attendence would likely plumet!

:teeth: :rotfl2:
