I can't believe nobody has suggested that you are being too negative about the squirrell or that you should sell your DVC ownership if you don't like squirrells...

Even if you like squirrels, you have to be leary of them - they can carry rabies!

Sorry to hear that you were confined to the bedroom due to the flying squirrel. Personally, I think they are adorable!

I'm not happy to hear that they used mace on the poor little guy. We have had a few in our house over the years and have always managed to catch them in a Have-a-Heart (live) trap using sunflower seeds as bait. Then we let them go outside.

Now snakes are another matter altogether! I would never harm one, but if I never crossed paths with another one ever again that would be fine by me.

I agree with Lisa's entire statement. I would think that Disney would have a safer and more humane way to remove the squirrel than to mace him. That's terrible.

However, I am sorry to hear that the squirrel scared you. Its never fun to be surprised like that.

we have flying cockroaches that are absolutely enormous....you could saddle up and ride them....

and i once had to kill a scorpion in our basement.....(i hit the poor thing about 20 times with my sandal....probably overkill, but you can't be too sure)..

so far no snakes, but we do have vipers and cobras in the area, so i suppose it could happen (god forbid....i doubt my heart will be able to take it)..

and back when we lived in michigan we had a whole family of raccoons come into the house through the chimney one day (and we definitely barraccaded ourselves on that occasion and called the city for help)....

so maybe a squirrel wont' be too bad......

but i think i would have asked for another room....

The Ugly:
I was thoroughly enjoying our first DVC stay, and OKW until the incident.....the squirrel incident. If you heard hysterical screaming about 10:30 p.m. on 6/21, I apologize.

We had come back from Downtown Disney and were coming into the Villa. My MIL and Niece went into the bedroom to put their packages away when they started screaming and jumped on the beds. I flying squirrel came scampering out of their room into the living room. I jumped up on the couch and my mom jumped up on the coffee table and the critter was running around (probably scared him half to death). I was trying to get my husband to open up the patio door and shoo him outside, but the squirrel ran under the dishwasher.

Those towel animals always miss us too, because it is probably pretty obvious that there are no little ones with us!

My wife has nerves of steel. One year at the Wine and Food festival she sat down on one of the concrete benches at Japan. All of a sudden a squirrel hops up on the bench next to her. She didn't scream or move a muscle. This little guy walks around the back of her to her other side eyeing her food. I ended up feeding it. Not that I wanted to, it was the only way I could get it away from her. I showed it the food and threw it to the ground. My wife shot off the bench like a jack rabbit.

A CM started to scold us for feeding it. I looked him in the eye and said any suggestions on how to handle this differently would be most appreciated!!!

This is a good example why you don't feed wildlife. They lose their fear of humans.

Exactly. It is dangerous for both the animals and the humans who are feeding them. There is a reason they are called "wild" life. Animals are perfectly capable of finding their own food. It is when humans start to feed them that they behave in this way. Frankly, I am suprised Disney doesnt do a better job trying to keep this from happening. You were put in a position of feed the squirrel or having your wife stalked by the squirrel. If the no feeding rule had been enforced more heavily and properly in the past, this incident may have been prevented.
