Hello DVC'ers,

I would like to get the opinion's of my fellow OKW owners. Do you think the main pool should have a water slide. I know my 5 year old son would love one. If Disney was to install one, what do you think it would mean for our maintenance fee's?????

They would pass the construction costs on to members. There would also be increased insurance costs and life guard staffing to be passed on to members via dues.

The costs weren't even really that much, they listed them in the survey or somewhere, I don't remember what they were, but they were not that much.

I just prefer the pool the way it is.

I like it the way it is. The other resorts have slides, those that want to use them may pool hop.

Each resort has its own features. OKW's is a more subdued pool which I like.

Our family of 2 little boys with one more on the way would really enjoy a waterslide at the OKW main pool but that resort is a product of its time. Being the first DVC resort, the foresight to incorporate a slide into the theming of the resort's signature pool just wasn't there. Fortunately, that is no longer the case. Too bad that DVC just doesn't step up and enhance the main pool at OKW. It would be the perfect time to get rid of the waste of space waterfall that flows over the dolphins at the far end of the OKW main pool.

You make a good point about OKW being a product of it's time and I agree that it seems that once Disney realized the full potential of DVC they thought much GRANDER!!! A perfect example is BWV.

I think it would be nice if Disney incorperated the dolphin waterfall area into a small water play area for the younger kids with a waterslide into the main pool for the older kids.

I did not vote yet because I'm not sure how to vote. Do I want a slide - the answer would be no, but it wouldn't be at Old Turtle Pond where I hang out. How would I vote as an OKW owner if we were asked to put one in - I would vote yes because it would be a benefit to everyone and wouldn't affect me at my Old Turtle Pond hangout anyway. I would propose this - the construction funds would come from DVC as a whole, not OKW owners, because it would benefit all the BWV/BCV/VWL owners that use OKW because they can't get into their resort. OKW owners would pick up the insurance/life guard because, like Richyams said, I think the cost was only $.01-.02 per point.

If we want want waterslides, we go over to Blizzard Beach.

I think OKW could have one slide. They are fun, kids love them. Eventually I will be bringing grandkids and would rather not have to pool hop in order for them to use a slide.

This has come up before and generated some fairly heated threads...there is a significant proportion of OKW owners that like the pool the way it is and dread any change to the pool, especially if that might make it more raucous...it has never seemed to be about the money for most of the anti-slide contingent...comments like "go poolhopping" if you want a slide, or even more ridiculous to spend $35 a day and go to Blizzard Beach are just silly and reflect a lack of understanding what a slide means to those who want and use one...the logical extension of that thinking-why not eliminate the pool altogether at OKW? Those that want a pool can always poolhop or go to a waterpark. --Oh, yeah, that might eliminate something that is important to a lot of people...not everyone, but a lot...hmmmm, sounds familiar...it is only a matter of the percentages.

An improved pool would enhance the OKW as a cash option for nonDVC guests...Disney needs to do this to be competitive...DVCers fill up the BWV, VWL and BCV before OKW. Points from those that trade out and the 4 % inventory of nonDVC rooms need to generate cash rentals and more often OKW is the place where DVC is going to have inventory to rent out-even if the traded points were from BWV VWL or BCV.

Despite having bigger rooms, the cash rates to stay at OKW are always lower than the other DVC resorts..$20 a night less up to $285 a night less depending on the room and the resort comparing it to...some of that difference is not fixable-- it is from location concerns, but I would guess some of it is lack of a theme pool...if theme pools did not make a difference then why did they invest in adding a slide to the Contemporary, and building new pools at the Poly and the GF? Why does every new resort feature a themed pool with a slide (the Saratoga Springs are unclear and yet to be built-we have seen pictures of a pool with slide but also have been told there would not be a slide)

Thank You PKS44 for a well thought out reply. I hope this thread does not get "heated". The one thing I hope everyone remembers is that the question of a waterslide is only at the main pool. If a member doesn't want to be around the rucous, then they can go to one of the several smaller, quieter pools without leaving their resort to "pool hop".

Thanks to all for your imput.

I think some of the appeal of OKW IS to be able to sit at a pool where it is quiet but IS close to where the everything is. It's a looooong walk to get a drink or bite to eat from the quiet pools.

I don't really care if they put in a Water Slide or not. I just want to go on record as saying this poll ONLY has meaning in support of a slide if it includes financial data much like included in the previous DVC survey. You have to included whether you would want a slide IF it included an increase in dues. Even better if you could provide what DVC did, how much for intial cost and about how much yearly. As written, I don't think it's appropriate to use this poll quoted in support of a water slide in future threads though it's not looking like it will support a slide at all. Quoting in the future, see "this poll" to see how many people want a water slide at OKW, will be a meaningless piece of info, IMO. It may have meaning if it's in the negative or it may not. The official DVC poll was of a much broader base and number than DIS could ever be and it was pretty overwhelming, I believe 69% against.

and, of course, the official survey was limited to OKW owners only. This poll is open to anyone signed on to the DIS. And yet, the results (at this time, anyway) pretty much mirror the official poll. I think this horse is dead!

I wonder as the OKW owners age, just like the rest of us and I am 48. I wonder if they will change thier minds if they go to a pool with a slide with grandkids. Of course alot may be more anti slide until grandkids. I wonder about the overall age of OKW owners simple because it has been there longer. I am a VWL owner so I did not vote. I just find the answers interesting on why for or against.

Sorry, I love the dolphins. It makes the area unique. If anyone wants a slide, buy into another resort.

KNWVIKING- I agree...it is so silly..it implies that the appeal of OKW is that its main pool does not have a slide...I always thought it had something to do with the golf course serenity, the large rooms, etc... Now I understand that some feel that a slide would ruin the peaceful nature of OKW, the thing they like best about it...I don't understand how changing one small area of a huge resort would have such an over arching effect on the whole place but that is the sentiment that has been expressed as I understand it...as for the dolphins-as we have covered on previous threads even the dolphins could be improved by making them something kids could play with instead of the hands off danger thing they are now...it is like telling the kids to look how much fun these porcelain figurines are-but don't touch anything! Surely making a little splashy area for the kids would not seriously detract from whatever serenity there is poolside--but hey we have been down this road before and we all know that unless Disney decides to do this on their own -it is not going to happen.

p.s-I would say I was sorry about how the Vikes are doing, but as as Rams fan I have my own problems...
