Okay, what if I have to cancel......

Hi,

I'm hoping this won't happen but what if I have to cancel my trip to HHI in October? I know my burrowed points (111) will be in a holding account until Feb 2004, right? I have a Feb. use year. Okay my problem will be: I'm a college student & I can only travel during holiday times. After my Fall break (October) there's Turkey day, xmas, & New Years. I don't want those points to wasted...So what would be my options?? Could I get something for one of those times? Could I rent the points to someone? I know this is a BIG what if question but with the weather the way its been in the southeast this year. I just want to know my opinions in case. I hope you don't think I'm nuts of something. Thanks!

We need to get terminology down.

If you cancel 31 days or more out, your points go back to whatever status they would have had.

Borrowed points cannot be returned into the year from which they were borrowed. So, if you cancel they have to be used by the end of your Use Year. (You haven't said what your Use Year is).

Your current points could be banked if you are within the guidelines.

If you cancel 30 days or less, all the points go into a "Holding Account". These points will all have to be used before the end of your Use Year and can only be used to book a trip 60 days or less in advance.

If you are flexible, you might be able to re-book even during a holiday time. I don't think HHI is that busy in the late fall/winter. You could also consider a WDW or Vero trip.


You can book Concierge Collection trips (if you book them 60 days before the end of your Use Year. You can travel during that time but not book a trip.)

You could try to rent the points or you could give a "gift" to someone of accomodations at WDW.

If I understand correctly there are a few choices but the bottom line is the points will expire (ie worthless) if not used by January 31, 2003. If you cancel within your 30 days of checkin, the points go into holding. That means reservations can only be made within 60 days of check-out, with the latest check-out date being January 31, 2003.

If you cancel more than 30 days before check-in the points can be used as "regular points" and can rebook immediately any trip up until a January 31, 2003 checkout.

MS does allow a one time exception, you may be able to bank these but it is probably not worth using that except now and not being able to use it in the next 40 years.

I would recommend, looking at the posts on the rent/trade board and seeing if you can rent your points. Your other option is if you know shortly that you have to cancel, post your exact reservation for rent.
