Facts:

- Considering booking now for October, 2013 (11 month, home resort)
- 95% would be with points from 2013 UY (the rest would be from 2012)
- We have a June UY.

If we were to cancel:
1. Do the points (95% of them) go back into 2013 "unrestricted" points (can be used for anything, banked, DCL, etc....) or are they restricted then?
2. What about the 16 points from 2012?
3. What else am I not asking that applies when canceling?

We are not sure if WDW is on the plan for 2013 or if we are going to try to go to either Aulani or on a cruise. I would love to get the home resort advantage and book at 11 months (now), but if we decide not to go, do not fully understand what happens to the various points.

Thank you (in advance) to those who fully "get" this part for your reply,
Dreams

To completely answer your question, I would need to know your Use Year.

Thanks for looking. I thought I included that, thank you for not just moving along, but asking. We have a June UY.

I suggest that you read, "understanding your vacation points" on the member website. It will answer all of your questions and more.

The 2013 points will go back to 2013 with no restrictions (still bankable, etc.), assuming you cancel at least 31 days before your trip. I assume that the 2012 points would have been banked into 2013. They would go back into 2013 and would need to be used up by May 31, 2014.

You did say you have a June UY, third line of your first post.

Your 2012 points would be banked points and those would remain in your 2013 UY. If you cancel, outside of the 31 days, the 2013 points get returned to their UY. Banked points are a final transaction, if you banked points from 2012 into 2013, those would remain in 2013.

As Bill, mentioned, you may also wish to look more into understanding your points, because if you cancel less than 31 days out, those points would then go into holding.

IF you cancel over a month in advance, everything drops back into your 2013 UY with no restrictions. if you cancel late, holding pts will be tougher to use.

2. What about the 16 points from 2012?

points can only be moved one time by banking or borrowing. when you bank 2012 pts into 2013, that is where they will stay and where they will expire if not used.

3. What else am I not asking that applies when canceling?

if you do use your pts outside the DVC system (for a cruise or stay at the poly) and have to cancel, the pts will remain "reservation pts" and cannot be used for DVC stays.

Thank you. I appreciate the reply and help. :goodvibes

In fairness, I added that after it was pointed out that I forgot it so that others viewing it would have the information as well. :goodvibes

Banked points are a final transaction...
This is a very helpful, easy to remember "rule." Thank you.

...points can only be moved one time by banking or borrowing....
Another great, easy to remember "rule." Thank you.

It's like a board game:
Banked points - final move
Points can only be moved once.
Points moved out of the system, stay out.

Thank you everyone!

If anyone has any further info that isn't covered above regarding our scenario, please feel welcomed to chime in. We appreciate it.

I was just looking at Understanding Your Vacation Points on the DVC site for the same reason - I was trying to review the cancellation rules. Has DVC modified the page so that it no longer gives an explanation of what happens during cancellation? I'm just not seeing it there - even when I search for the word "cancel" on the page.

Thanks!

Basically, a cancellation of a reservation at a DVC resort 31 days or more before the arrival date results in the points being returned to your account in the same status as they were previously (banked, current, borrowed). Banked and Borrowed points will expire at the end of Use Year into which they were moved. Current points can still be banked subject to your usual banking deadline.

Cancelling a DVC reservation 30 days or less before arrival also results in the points being returned to the account in the Use Year of the reservation - but they will be Holding points - which means they can only be used to make a reservation within 60 days of arrival. They cannot be banked and will expire at the end of that Use Year.

Non-DVC reservations do have some different cancellation policies based on what they were used to reserve. All will lose the $95 reservation fee and all will remain as Reservation Points - which means they can only be used for another non-DVC reservation. They also cannot be banked and will expire at the end of the Use Year of the cancelled reservation.

World Passport Collection cancellations will result in the points remaining in that Collection and subject to another $95 fee to use them again within the 2 year period of their use from when they were first banked into that system.
