But, is there any way to attend a restaurant in the park, but not tour the park or use up a day on a hopper?
I was thinking about one of the princess breakfasts on one of our "off" days. I know I'm crazy, and it's probably not possible, but I find out something new every day!

Nope. You have to have park admission to dine in any of them.

That's what I thought, but I thought it was worth asking! Looks like we'll either do it on one of our park days or we'll go to 1900. The boys don't want to do Princesses, so I didn't want to "waste" our time together in the parks.

Maybe 1900 PF would be a good choice for them then since they can see the prince and it is not all female characters.

In the past, park admission was required to use any of the restaurants within the parks. I tried to verify this but did not find anything on the Disney website - someone else may have more info.

There are several restaurants outside the parks that host characters breakfasts (but no princesses ):

Grand Floridian - 1900 Park Fare
Breakfast - Features Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, Mad Hatter, Snow White and Dopey

Beach Club - Cape May Cafe
Breakfast - features Minnie, Goofy, Chip and Dale

Contemporary - Chef Mickeys
Breakfast - Chef Mickey, Minnie Mouse, Chip 'n Dale, and Goofy

Polynesian – Ohana Character Breakfast
Breakfast - Stitch, Lilo and Mickey Mouse

Have you already purchased your passes? How many days are you going?
It may only cost a couple of dollars to add another day (or two) onto your passes.
On our last trip I got passes for the total number of days we'd be in Orlando, including travel days that I wasn't sure if we'd go to the parks on. It probably cost me an extra $20, if that. And we did end up using them even though it was only for 3 hours the first night ~ just too excited to go by the time we finally got there.
