I'm planning on giving my niece a Disney Cruise for her birthday. I am quite sure she will be very excited, but just in case she's not (she's 13 you know.... they are SO unpredictable), or she can't (her mom's kind of funny about missing Basketball (of all things) and school sometimes.... but only if it's not about her.... if it benefits her (my SIL) then my niece misses school/basketball, otherwise, it's hit and miss), I've also decided to offer her the option of.... say a $100 gift certificate somewhere... just as an "equal" option. I don't normally spend this much AT ALL, it's just I want to take her on the cruise, but want to offer a "fair" second choice if we run into problems. ANYWAY, here's my dilemma. Do I tell my DB and SIL what I'm giving her ahead of time to avoid any "surprises" or problems, or do I just give it to her like I would any other gift...... without prior approval?? As a parent, would you be upset if this were her gift and you didn't know about it ahead of time?? The cruise is actually in January, her birthday in April, so there's plenty of time between the two for planning.....
The only reason I lean towards "just giving it to her", is to avoid being shut down for "silly" reasons.... I love my SIL, but she can be a bit of a stickler, and a micro-manager (for example, the girls' bedtime is 9:00..... 9:01 is a crisis!!! When I watched them while my DB and her were in Mexico last year, she would call between 9:01 and 9:05 every night to make sure they were in bed... of course they ALWAYS were
...... good thing they can be so quiet while I'm on the phone.....
). I'm of the philosophy that life just isn't that serious, and that a lot can be learned & experienced outside of the bounderies..... within reason.
What do you parents think...... I could use your input..... I don't want to create an issue..... I just want to spend a super fun week with my niece.
Sorry that was so long.....
