Okay NBC . .

Well, streaming is only available to those who are paying for a cable or satellite subscription, so yeah I think those who depend on the (free) main NBC channel for their Olympic coverage do have a right to complain. I'm glad I'm not one of them, but I understand what they're talking about. I'm so sick of seeing nothing but swimming on the prime time coverage I could spit. And all of the time wasted watching them stretch and dance around and adjust their goggles, swim caps, and suits is ridiculous when they could be using that time to show some of the other 50 some odd sports that happened during the day. I mean, it's not like it's live and we have to wait for the race to start. :headache:

Human interest stories are another time waster. Look, I don't mind learning a little bit about the athletes, but you don't need to make these long, dramatic mini documentaries about everyone's "journey". Just show the competition, dangit!!

The prime time swimming is live, isn't it? That was the impression I got watching it last night.

Yes, the swimming events have been shown live. It's one of the few events that work well for primetime TV (at least as far as TV Execs go) - they're on a set schedule, they're quick (most events, that is) and they can cut to them when something is going on.

Ok, a fair point about the swimming being shown live on the east coast. I'm on the west coast so nothing is EVER live. But are swimming events live on the east EVERY Olympics? Because they seem to do the same thing with the swimming coverage regardless if the host city is a one hour time difference or a ten hour one.

I doubt any of the primetime TV was live events in London or Sydney due to time zones. Primetime (on the East Coast at least) would have been in the middle of the night in London.

They try to show as much live in prime time as possible depending on time zone. I'm an east coaster, so I do always forget how the west coast gets impacted by those decisions. Very little from Beijing was live, as I recall. NBC is bragging that Brazil's closeness to us in time is allowing them to offer more live television broadcasts than ever before.

NM -- gymnastics is on teh prime time tv broadcast list :)

Maybe when NBC's contract expires, C-SPAN should get the games ;p

Who sells the rights, is it the IOC? It seems like this kind of "national" event belongs to everyone, it is a bit of a shame you need pricey cable to access it all. OTOH, NBC paid a lot of money for this, so I get why they won't give it away for free to those without cable.

Interestingly, the women's team final is going on right now, and it looks like it will NOT be re-broadcast for prime time!! Unless I'm missing something, but tonight looks like all swimming. I'm glad I can watch the replay from home when I get off work, missing the team final would make me quite upset!!

It absolutely will be re-brodcast in prime time. It's one of the premier events.

I'm really surprised it's not on any of the 5 channels showing events.

Oh I'm almost positive that it will be shown (talking about gymnastics, right?). It must be a misprint. There's no way they would skip one of the most, if not THE most popular Olympic event.

The NBC Sports app is really spoiling me now...it's so nice to be able to watch a good balance of other gymnasts compete besides just the US team, which is something you won't see in prime time.

I thought so too, but when I looked at the NBC schedule for 8pm EST it was all swimming. Perhaps it will be updated later.

NM -- I was looking at the online listings, not the TV listings. it is on the TV schedule. I'll edit to avoid mass panic ;p

Right or wrong they never put it on during the day. They will be holding until prime time. There is a swimming final at 9:30 and then not another final until 10:30 so I imagine there will be a lot of gymnastics between then.

From my guide

Live swimming finals include Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin in the women's 200m free, and Michael Phelps vs. 2012 winner Chad le Clos in the 200m fly. In gymnastics, the U.S. women go for back-to-back gold medals in team competition. Also live from the pool, the U.S. men look for a fourth straight gold in the 4x200m free relay; the women's 200IM final; and semifinals in the men's 100m free and 200m breast, and the women's 200m fly. In women's diving, it's the platform synchronized final.

Don't tempt me my little pirate woman. . . I don't need more points!

;)

:p

Ok, I've been away from the computer for a couple for days....thanks to a trip Up North in Michigan.

Two questions.....you actually have points Willy?? and what suction cup thing are we even talking about? I know.......I haven't watched any of the Olympics yet. Gotta get caught up here before I do!!!

I don't think so, but I'm a very cautious person. ;)

Idiots at NBC holding to exactly what one of their executives described which is packaging the Olympics like a romance novel since most viewers are women who aren't as interested in the results as much as the "journey". They kept the gymnastics off of all of their 6 or 7 channels today thinking it'll force people to tune into their prime time broadcast. Now that everyone knows they've won the gold, there's no point.

They didn't bid for the right to deliver the Olympics to Americans, they bid on the right to block the Olympics from Americans - then deliver us a 3 hour scripted reality show at night.

Oh, first of all welcome back @Kitty 34 !! :)

The suction thing is they heat up these glass cups and apply them to the skin and the heat 'sucks' the skin away from the underlying muscle breaking the capillaries and supposedly promoting healing and relieving pain.

It was mostly about Michael Phelps doing it, but a few others were as well.

I saw the same story no less than 4 times yesterday and it seemed like over-kill.

NBC says you can blame women.

“The people who watch the Olympics are not particularly sports fans. More women watch the Games than men, and for the women, they’re less interested in the result and more interested in the journey. It’s sort of like the ultimate reality show and mini-series wrapped into one. And to tell the truth, it has been the complaint of a few sports writers. It has not been the complaint of the vast viewing public.”... John Miller.

They can't handle sports you see. So NBC has to give em Gym Moms and Cupping Dynasty and Real Coach's/husbands of the Olympics.

Where do these TV executives get it? Do they go to school to learn how to patronize? Or is it a God given gift?

Hey everyone, look at Shane Tusup. He really put a lot of work into this. Congratulations to him.... Oh and his wife, ole what's her name, helped out just a little bit by uh winning the actual medal. But look at his well deserved celebration.

Maybe I just don't hang with the in crowd when it comes to women because I don't know a single one that likes to be patronized.

Unfortunately, the NBC executive is probably correct about the majority of female Olympics viewers. Still, he shouldn't have issued such a condescending and patronizing statement. Just say something like "research shows most viewers enjoy the features and back stories of the athletes."

From what I understood, swimming from Bejing in 2008 was shown live in prime time on the US East coast. NBC apparently twisted the IOC's arm to schedule it at 8am Bejing time the following morning.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Can anybody recommend a good website where the day's medal winners can be quickly and easily found? I don't care about the results in the round of 32 in judo or preliminary heats in swimming. Just a list of medal winners without having to dig thru pages of extraneous information. Thanks.
