I would guess that NBC has significant data to support their theories of what they think the audience wants. The problem is that the coverage plays out like a search for America's Next Sweetheart. NBC just pushes the tiny gymnasts and smiling swimmers named Katie, Lilly, Missy, Molly, Kelsi, Haley and every other name ending in ie, y or i. I assume they think that every woman wants this reality show drama. Who knows. Perhaps these programming decisions attract more viewers than they alienate.
The faux drama and hysterical commentators make it worse. I understand that people like familiarity, but Michael Phelps' mother gets more air time than the president. And now the baby is the latest NBC/Phelps prop (and don't tell me that Phelps isn't making a calculated marketing decision to have mom and the baby front and center.) Don't get me wrong, Michael Phelps is probably the greatest swimmer of all time and certainly deserving of audience focus. I make it a point to watch his events. But isn't his performance enough? As to Tusup, I can only guess that NBC is going for comic relief. Who doesn't want to see a chemically enhanced crazy dude with a man bun?
On another note, I would not be against someone punching Rowdy Gaines.
