Okay ladies, give me the scoop on dealing with gray/silver hair.

Former hairdresser here...in my opinion, each strand gets better coverage with a brush.

Really? You think so?
I'm not sure why that would be...but maybe you are right. When I do my own at home I use a bottle. Granted, it is a good bottle, LOL but still a bottle.

Every Matrix, Paul Mitchell and Redken coloring class I have ever attended has ssaid to apply it with a bowl and brush because if a client sees you using a bottle, they'll think they can do it themselves but if you use the bowl and brush (which would be harder to juggle on your own) it will look harder to do. Sorta like weaving the hair instead of the cap--unless you are using several different colors.

Thanks for your response. I may have to test that theory.:rotfl:

I've been dyeing my own hair for over 25 years. Stylists always comment about how great my hair is.

\Ditto. My stylists compliment my hair all the time, how good it looks and how healthy my hair is. Been dying it for about 15 years now at home. I'm poor and can't afford to buy better even if it's better quality.

I just can't afford more than $10 every couple months. No Expensive Starbucks for me wither so there's nothing to really cut out of the budget.

I used to just apply with the bottle and got okay results.

Once I switched to applying a line with the bottle, then brushing it out from the root, I started getting better results. I take it as a good sign that I color my hair and no one notices! If anyone says anything, it's usually a comment on the hairdo or the makeup, but not the color. :thumbsup2

Oh. So you apply it with the bottle and then use the brush to cover the new growth instead of your finger? I think that is what you are saying.

That is so interesting that you noticed a difference. Honestly, when I switched from applying from a bottle to using the brush I could not tell a difference on my clients. But that is probably just me.

LOLOLOLOL!!! I missed that class! :teeth:

Buckalew, I'm just too darn cheap to go to a colorist. I've done it twice in my life. I'm sure all the hairdressers out there can tell that I'm a DIYer, but they're not saying anything to me! :lmao: (probably :rotfl2: after I walk away, though!)

I under what you are saying--it is expensive and I am always shocked to see what people will pay.
I seriously doubt that hairdressers can tell you do your own.

I think when most people color their own hair (especially time after time) their hair appears chalky, no dimension or life to it ...IMHO

My new favorite thing when I go every 4-5 weeks is gloss as a final process it is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!:cool1:

I started to go grey in my early twenties. At the time "frosted" hair was in vogue. Everyone and I mean everyone asked where I got mine done! If I was going to pay to get my hair colored it sure wouldn't be grey! As it spread to my entire head it was a beautiful silvery white color and I got many compliments, many women told me that if theirs was so pretty they wouldn't cover it up. Well one day I woke up and I was old enough to actually have that grey hair (thought it was pretty cool up til then:lmao: ) and ran out and got it colored. I really thought I looked ten years younger:rotfl: Well now that I've been doing this for five years I'm ready to go back to the grey. It grows really fast and is just a pain with the roots showing so soon. So my question is for the stylists out there, do I have an option short of shaving my head? I use Preference so it's permanent color and in my job I need to meet appearence standards so I can't just let the roots go. What are my options? :scared:
