Okay I Know I Am An Idiot But Help....

Can someone please (despite the fact that I have been to WDW many times) tell me what the difference is between ILLUMINATIONS and FANTASMIC??? I have probably seen them both but then again maybe NOT. UGH. Where are they and are they at night and (pls help, and don't laugh, are they the SAME thing?)!!
OKAY now, I am going again in late Jan., if I can only see one WHICH ONE???

Illuminations is in Epcot, Fantasmic is in MGM. Illuminations is every night at 9pm. I think showtimes for Fantasmic vary. If you're only going to see one, I recommend Illuminations. It gives me goosebumps every time.

Fantasmic at MGM, water & "island" based, with audience in an amphitheater.

Illumuniations at Lake at Epcot. No seating except dinner packages. Stand around World Showcase or Future World around lake.

Illuminations is at Epcot and is a fireworks/laser show over the lagoon. It involves a giant globe in the middle of the water. There are images projected on the globe and lots of fire and water everwhere. It is a really neat show with great music, but I must admit I really miss the old, original Illuminations where they featured each country.
Fantasmic is at MGM studios and is, to the best of my knowledge, a show that combines fireworks, lasers, and live action. You see, I have never been to Fantasmic myself. So don't feel bad, you are not the only one!

I KNEW IT, I knew if I posted this on DIS I would get someone to come right out and set me straight and not laugh at me!!! THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!!! Now I will look into "catching" Illiuminations at EPCOT!!!!!

Illuminations is combination fireworks, laser, water and fire effects, and a big globe with moving pictures projected from it. Awesome music! Very exciting and cool.

Fantasmic! is Mickey Mouse, some live character appearances, animated movies projected on a screen of water, and fireworks and fire effects.

I'd find it difficult to choose...I love the Illuminations music, but find the show has a lull when they do the globe part. Fantasmic is amazing, but in different ways. Maybe you could get super lucky and find a night when Fantasmic is at 7 and scoot over to Epcot for Illuminations?!

Illuminations occurs in the body of water in Epcot. The theme of the show concentrates on the countries of World Showcase. Each country has their own light display, and the countries light up during their own times, with the peak being a fireworks display and a large holographic image of the world in the middle of the water.

Fantasmic is a show that combines light displays, floats, characters, and lasers that occurs in a very small pool of water made specifically for the show. It is located in MGM/Disney Studios. Sorcerer Mickey is the star of the show, as he beats Malificent as the dragon, but many other Disney characters are also in the show on the floats.
