I have never lived alone, and now, with the exception of my son, I am. He is gone every weekend at his dads, and most of the summer. I DO enjoy the peace and quiet...during the day. But I have been having trouble sleeping at night. How do you guys do it when no ones home? I am used to some noise...LOL! I have tried leaving a tv on, fan, etc, but nothings working?

You'll laugh--I turn my computer on and fall asleep listening to The Dis Unplugged podcast. I find it very relaxing! If you go in through iTunes, the podcast will play to the end of the episode you select, and your computer should go into the 'sleep' mode.

While my situation it a little different - I lived alone for six years through college. I moved away from home - growing up in a family of 5.
I learned to sleep with the radio on - I usually prefer public radio as there aren't commercials, there is annoying or over-bearing or really loud music.

Married now, I still sleep with the radio on. DW doesn't care much for it - but now I can't sleep without it! :)

Sounds crazy but sometimes I will put on something like The American Adventure or Spaceship Earth on you tube and fall asleep to that. :goodvibes

hey DB... hobbies??? do you have any hobbies that you can do it at home before going to bed ??? I have a few... and I exhaust my brain in doing it and eventually fall asleep... was in a long relationship.... and now take this "alone" nights refreshing... you get sleep on which ever side you preffer... nobody complains about my snoring :goodvibes ... How long has it been... give it time... I guess for now.. the usual... chamomile tea... a nice lavander bath and a good book.... :goodvibes

Get a sound machine - I love falling asleep to the sounds of waves on the beach - it's so relaxing!

I always have to fall asleep with noise too. If it's too quiet my thoughts race over random things and I can never fall asleep.

I usually just keep the TV on and use the sleep timer. But since you said that doesn't work for you, do you have a smartphone that can use apps? I have an iPhone app called Easy Relax. It has sounds like Hawaii vacation, Rainy Day, etc. And you can set it to turn off at a certain time. Pretty cool. I downloaded this app ages ago, so there are probably plenty out there now to choose from!

I love listening to mp3s of rain to get me to sleep. Works a treat

I like falling asleep to old-time radio shows on my iPod. It's like falling asleep while someone's telling you a bedtime story.

dont drink coffee alcohol or soda a few hours before bedtime
then when you go to bed, drink a cup of camomile tea (sweeten with honey if need be) and read a book. it will help youre stress and anxiety reduce, and you may be able to sleep.

It has been a while...just with my son being gone a lot this summer its killing me! I did listen to some music last night, and finally fell asleep, and got about 7 hours...finally! I dont mind the snoring...since I snore a little too. :rotfl:

Sleep? What's that. Seriously though, I must have a brain detractor. Something that makes me think of things other than what is going on in my life. Ocean is good, quiet TV is good. A fan is okay but not really enough.

Insomnia is aweful, good luck.

My DS abs DH are away at my FIL's, so I know what you mean about it being hard to sleep. I try to do all of the things I never get to do with them here. Today, it was browse for DISigns. Tomorrow, steam clean the carpets! I don't know if it helps me sleep, but it does help me feel line an accomplished insomniac. Good luck finding your thing!

Try putting CSPAN on the TV. I don't use the timer on the TV to avoid pressuring myself. If I am still awake when the TV turns off, I feel like I've failed and will never fall asleep.

I have an air filter that I run at night. I originally bought it to drown out the neighbor's barking dog. Figured as long as I was going to get something that made noise, it might as well serve a purpose.

Avoid the internet an hour before bedtime. Also when you are laying in bed tell yourself that you are going to really enjoy your rest. That you will sleep peacefully until you hear your alarm and that you will awake relaxed and refreshed. The power of thought is amazing, so keep it all positive. If none of that works get a pet, having a presence around you will allow you to let your guard down and get the sleep you deserve.

The best way to fall asleep is to tire yourself out. Maybe an evening workout? A walk post dinner? Otherwise a glass of warm milk, or other melatonin boosting foods, e.g. oats, rice, tomatoes, bananas, almonds. etc. will help.

White noise (i.e. noise which is not bothersome is a short term solution). Let me know if you need any more tips...

Good luck,
AK

I know how you feel. I was married for 7 yrs and slept next to that same person for the past 10 years... Now I am in a LTR so I am alone during the week. I have issues falling asleep alone too. My solution is tons of pillows to take up more space in the bed, and falling asleep to an audio book. HtH!
