Okay Disneyland vet friends, why am I not excited about going to WDW?

Wow Capri, I'm impressed that you already have all that planned out. Wanna plan my ADR's for me? ;) I'm soooo super intimidated by it all, I'm just kind of avoiding it and thinking I'll pack pb&j's and eat counter service.

I know, it's weird having all that planned out so soon. I can't even make ADRs until June 10th. I wonder how many times I'll change my mind before June 10th, or before our trip for that matter. I think my DH is gonna look like this a lot this year ----> :rolleyes2 :crazy2:

I had to start planning though because I thought it would help get me more excited about our trip, and you know what?.....it did help! I'm feeling pretty good about our trip now!:thumbsup2 (except for airfare:eek: )

Also, just so it wouldn't be so imtimidating and complicated, I planned to do one park per day. It just makes it so much easier to plan ADRs that way, plus we don't waste a bunch of time on busses, and we won't wear ourselves out either. I figured if we really need to add park hopping to our tickets, we can do it at anytime while we're there, but I'm trying to keep things simple and relaxed. Trying is the key word here.;)

There's nothing wrong with pb&j and counter service though. My kids would probably LOVE that! But after all that great food on the cruise, how are you going to survive eating sandwiches and chicken fingers at the parks?:rotfl:
(Or wait, maybe after all that rich cruise cuisine, you'll actually be relieved to eat pb&j and chicken fingers.:scratchin )

This is so funny....I have the same "anxiety" I guess about DL. We went to WDW two years ago and just had an amazing time. I guess I'm worried about DL "measuring up".

You will love WDW. EPCOT is amazing....very large, especially the international section. But, there's Test Track and Mission to Mars, which DL doesn't have. Animal Kingdom was so great....my kids' favorite (they were 4 and 6 at the time). Expedition Everest was fun...I guess it's WDW "version" of Matterhorn....on steroids!! MGM was so cool...definitely ride Rock-n-Rollercoaster, it was a blast!! Of course, MK is phenomenal...when you see Cinderella's castle, it's just overwhelming. My daughter stood there, awestruck and said, "Mom, it's just like in my dreams." I almost cried!!

Anyway, what I'm trying to say, and what you DL veterans would probably tell me is that each park is different, yet amazing and unique. It's certainly worth the trip to see it!
You will be glad you went!

you picked some good places to eat! remember at the coral reef, you can have a diver come down in the tank and hold a sign up. my inlaws were celebrating their 40th so we surprised them with a sign from us and they served them a delicious chocolate mousse w/strawberries. it was very magical!!! at no charge!!!

Well, I have two rooms booked at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL) for December 7-14. It will be our two boys first visit to WDW (DS8 and DS5), as well as my MIL's and BIL's first visit too.

We'll be there during all the Christmas holiday decor and festivities, so it should be very pretty.

But for some reason I am NOT excited about going, and I don't know why. Is it the worry about crowds? Is it the long flights? Is it the uncertainty of not knowing how WDW will be that time of year? Is it all the gosh-darn planning I have to do around ADRs (uhg)? Is it because planning a trip to WDW is just so much more complicated? Is it because airfares to Orlando from Spokane are outrageous? Is it because I just love DLR too much and will miss all my favorite attractions?

I know that we (my family) need a new Disney experience since we've been to DLR so many times, and WDW would provide that for us, but why am I not excited? Anyone else go through this?:confused3

I didn't think that planning a trip to WDW was that much more complicated than a trip to Disneyland...which is saying a lot since Disneyland is a breeze for us. Then again, we didn't do the dining plan or ADR's at WDW. What a hassle and not worth the money for us. Besides, food is just a secondary thing on the trip that I don't really care about. I'd rather just eat something cheap and quick and be on my way.

We're nervous that a trip to DLR will feel more like a visit to a local amusement park. Granted, once we're inside the parks I hope that changes.

We have some friends who grew up in California and visited DLR several times a year. We spent about 5 years trying to convince them to make a trek to WDW. Once they did, they told us there was no comparison and would now be visiting WDW more often than DLR.

Disneyland doesn't feel like a local amusement park at all. DCA...maybe a little. But Disneyland, no way! I thought the MK at WDW felt more like an amusement park than Disneyland. There really is no comparison between the overall experience of DLR to WDW. WDW is much larger and you can really get imersed (sp?) in all things Disney. But if you directly compare Disneyland park to the MK at WDW....Disneyland blows it away.

Yes WDW can be over whelming, but like I've told many people going, planning is the key to having a good vacation.

Really? I like to plan a little. But over-planning can really ruin a vacation for me. Growing up, we took trips with the extended family to WDW. My family just went with the flow and had a great time. My aunt had planned like crazy and they were basically on a schedule for where to go and what to do. Needless to say, my cousins have much different memories from WDW than I do. They talk about how horrible the ridgid schedule was and whatnot. Poor things. I have only great memories from WDW. Relaxed, fun vacations.

It is sooooo lovely to see that there are other over achiever planners just like me! :lmao: The planning just takes the stress out of the what if's and gives me an outlet for withdrawals between trips. WDW at Christmas before the rush, AKL in the cool air, you can count on tons of animals roaming about. The whole world is magical, what's not to love? Enjoy the planning and count on having a stellar trip.

I know. It silly for me to even be worried about it.:goodvibes

I think the pressure is on because my MIL is coming, and I started to crack a bit. You know what I mean.....we're the Disney experts and should be able to plan the perfect vacation.

I just love threads like this!

You are going to have so much fun! You will love the AKL & eating at Boma. It is one of the three WDW restaurants that we will be returning to, the other two being Kona Cafe and Le Cellier.

I'm a DL vet who has been to WDW twice now within the last 3 years, so I can give you a little advice that either worked for me or I learned through the school of hard knocks! :rotfl: I know DL like the back of my hand, but to me WDW is like living on a whole 'nother planet! That is, until I got used to it.

One important thing to realize right away: You cannot do everything there is to do there on your first trip, or even your second trip, There's always the next time!

Also, you will get a bad case of "deja-vu" when you enter the Magic Kingdom. Everything basically looks the same, but it's a bit different. It

I did happen to pay a few $ and register for the Unofficial Guide (UG).:thumbsup2

This was one of the first things that I was going to recommend. Our first trip I thought I had planned well, but I didn't. We hardly saw anything. This last trip I followed the UG & the subscribed touring plans almost to the letter, and I was so completely amazed at how much we got done! For example, our Disney Studios day - we literally did all but one thing on our plan that day, which is a feat in itself.

What's nice about this is that the hard part has bee planned out for you in advance - the best order in which to do which particular ride. Even though we had already been once, I still didn't remember hardly anything at all. And since I have no sense of direction, it was a bonus to have someone tell me where to go next.

I also followed the UG's recommended days for each park, as well as the crowd level calendar. I'm positive that had a lot to do with how well our days went. Our only busy park visit was for MNSSHP, which we will do again in a heartbeat.

We are doing the DDP and I've already picked out our restaurants. It's just so crazy to me to have a touring plan so early in the planning process. I haven't had to come up with a touring plan in a long time because we've been to DL so many times, I don't even need a touring plan.....it's all ingrained in my brain.:rotfl2:

We just returned a few months ago after doing the DDP and loved it. It was a lot of food, but we just planned it so we really didn't purchase any extra food while we were there. We ate a cereal breakfast in the room every morning, mostly to save time. We won't be doing it on future trips, but it was fun to do once. Yes, we could've seen more of each park if we had not done this, but we really enjoyed all the table service places we ate at.

Just use the touring plans to schedule your activities around the restaurants - it worked well for us.

I think this is one thing that's making me nervous: I see on the boards a ton of people that's going to be there the same week as us. ... ... So in all actuality, even though there's a ton of people going, it still won't seem that busy in the parks. Does what I said make sense? It might just be a bunch of typed out mumbo-jumbo.:goodvibes :rolleyes1

You make complete sense! It's true. But on our first trip, which happened to be during Spring Break, everyone around us was complaining about how crowded the MK was that particular day. I looked around and saw wide open spaces with nominal waits. I guess that nothing looks packed after spending the day after Christmas at DL when it's sold out!

I told my DH that I kind of feel like I am planning a trip to the Wisconsin Dells (for those who don't know... "The Waterpark Capital of the World"). :

In a word - NO! I've been to the Dells, and it's not like that at all. Oh, that's funny. The DL area is just a different feel from WDW. I personally like how close everything is to each other.

If you are worried about time, I would skip some of the stuff that is the same as DL or that DL's is better cause you can see that all the time. Go with stuff unique to WDW.

A very good plan. Or you can just choose ahead of time what things you want to do that are the same, just because you want to do them.

And another word about planning - for me, I could never plan too much. Planning = Dreaming. And the one good thing about a plan is that it can always be tossed away if you choose to do so, which is what we did a lot. Most of the time we just did what the kids wanted to do, like ride on Soarin' four times!

Spend time over on the WDW boards. You will learn a lot just by reading through them, without even planning a thing. It amazing what people on the DIS know, and the different perspectives given are great.

Pick up copies of the Imagineering Field Guides (AK, MK & Epcot). They're filled with lots of fun trivia, but I found that they were very helpful just to orient myself to the parks.

Okay - I've jabbered on enough here. I wouldn't mind answering any of your questions, though. You can PM me if you want.

Have fun!
