OK...What did I see???

Could you google animals in the weasel family, look at the pictures, and you might find what you saw?

My guess is a ringtail cat (sometimes called a civet cat, though that is not really what they are -- they are actually related to racoons.) They are about the size of a "healthy" domestic cat, with yellowish-grey short fur, a very pointy little head, long legs, and a lovely fluffy tail that usually has grey/white rings -- but the rings are not always clear enough to see easily. I grew up near Houma, and we occasionally would see one in the woods behind our house.

You can find photos if you Google, but it's hard to find any where the legs are clearly visible in profile -- these are nocturnal animals like their cousins the racoon, and they tend to crouch when discovered.

It sounds like a cotamundi. I don't know how to post a picture but they look similar to big racoons with pointed noses and long tails. I don't know if they usually live in your area though. I thought they were more jungle habitat.

just curious - didn't you or your DH have a camera on your cell phone?

One of my supervisors has one of those! She's the coolest thing ever!
Here's what they look like...

Went and looked this up. Nope. Not that. Tail wasn't that prominent and (I know I keep coming back to this) it's legs were long and straight.

That is REALLY CUTE though! Just adorable looking isn't it?!? :cutie:

Yes. And I had my DSLR in the backseat. We always see animals down this road so it took a second or 2 to realize we didn't know what we were looking at. it's a BARELY 2-lane road (has only been paved for about 2 years) with trees woods immediately on either side. It walked across the road and directly into the road. (It didn't run, but didn't stop to gaze at us either) By the time I realized we didn't know what it was, it was across the road and going into the trees. :confused3
