Currently booked at AoA in a Lion King room from Nov 9 to Nov 17 upgraded to DDP from the free QS. Just for fun ;) I looked at what else we could do for the same money and discovered its only $30 more to get a regular room at AKL. Not a savannah view and not a bunkbed room.

Is it worth it? Some of my concerns are its kind of out of the way, we will be spending a lot of time at MK and Epcot, AK is our least favorite park. And I guess just extra travel time to all of our ADRs which I might have to change some :)

Hi Kerrie.

Although I've never stayed at AofA, I think you'll get more of a resort feeling at AKL. The lobby is beautiful, the pool area is nice, and there are good restaurant choices. I definitely has a laid back feeling. I guess it depends on what's more important to you.

First time I went to AK, I couldn't stand it. Now as far as rides go, it's my favorite. :)

Have fun deciding!

your question is more like resort hotel or motel. You will get the whole Disney Package at the AKL, you will get a highly themed motel room at AoA. I would do the upgrade (mostly really shows how overpriced the AoA are!). You will have so many things availabel to do at the resort any downtime will be much mroe fun! Busses are a bit longer to MK, but not like a huge difference. AK and POP/AoA are pretty far form MK anyway, I dont' think it will make much of a difference.

My hubby fell in love with AKL. We have stayed at other Deluxe and he always says it's not AKL. I would totally recommend staying there as the atmosphere is great, and being able to see the animals is a nice bonus, it is a nice pool, and great restaurants. We don't mind taking the bus to any of the parks, and they seem to run a good number of buses so we don't feel like its an inconvenience being a little further out. I think you will love it!

I love AK but I love it because we stayed in Savanah View Room @ Kidani, and we drive our car to the parks. If I couldnt stay Savannah View I probably wouldnt stay. AOA especially being new resort with new rooms, would be my chose.

Usually WL is around the same price as AKL. Is that available? I ask because it would put you in the MK area, just a short boat ride away from MK, FW, and CR.

For me the answer is a no brainer. Go to the AKL!!!! But let me give you the long answer as to why. This is probably more of an answer than you bargained for, but you did ask to be convinced.

Granted, there are some people who really like the value resorts. While I've never been one of them, I'll admit that AoA does has some appeal if the family suite (without paying a fortune) is something you are attracted to. Having two bathrooms and a seperate bedroom for mom and dad is a big plus. While not our cup of tea, food court dining can be appealing to those who aren't interested in the time or expense of sit down meals, or more adventurous flavors. If having some privacy and the extra bathroom, along with the speed and convenience of food court dining, is important to you then an AoA suite may be the way to go.

However, if privacy, an extra bathroom and a food court aren't necessary, I think the AKL has more to offer in the way of what I call a real Disney experience. What do I mean by real, you ask? Well, real in the sense of what I believe Walt Disney intended Disney resorts to be. An immersive experience, just like Walt envisioned The Polynesian Resort to be when he drew up The Florida Project. Ultimately, for me it comes down to the difference between theming and decoration.

Let me elaborate on what I see as the differences. Just like Walt's Polynesian Resort was intended to instantly transport you from the central Florida swamp to Polynesia itself, from the traditional Polynesian style long houses right down to the burning tiki torches........the AKL takes you off to Africa, immersing you in the theme, from the traditional African lodge design right down to the decor and the surrounding savannahs. It's the type of immersive experience I think you are assured at Disney's deluxe resorts, where the intended theme is largely carried throughout the entire resort. I don't believe the moderate resorts (outside of what I like to still call Dixie Landings) accomplish that, and I certainly don't think the value resorts do.

Now let's look at AoA. It's description purports to let you become a part of your favorite Disney animated film. But how do they accomolish that? Well, from what I've seen, I don't think they do. Why? Because the resort relies on decoration as opposed to theming. What does that mean exactly? Well, if I want to become a part of the animated movie Cars, I want to BE in Radiator Springs. I want to walk through the town on my way to my room, and feel like I'm in the film.....as opposed to just walking past a big Mater decoration thrown in a courtyard. The rooms are the same way. Don't give me a Cars suite that is nothing but a bunch of decoration thrown throughout the room...give me a Mack suite that is themed such that I feel like I AM Lightning McQueen inside Mack on my way to the final Piston Cup race.

Well, enough about this somewhat abstract difference between theming and decoration, let me talk about actually staying in the resort, as we spent a night at the AKL just a few weeks ago. While I haven't stayed at AoA, I have stayed at other value resorts, and AoA looks similar. For us the resort experience was ok, but missing something. The rooms, the furniture, the amenities were ok, but lacked some of what my family wants in a resort room. I want real wood furniture, and a closet, and a plush bed.....things the value resorts don't really provide. Go ahead, call me a deluxe resort snob....but if you can get the deluxe resort experience I think you should take it. As for the AKL itself, the theming may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if it appeals to you it is well done. The lobby is expansive and beautiful. The rooms (while not a suite) are good sized, well appointed, and very comfortable. However, the real appeal of the AKL is in the surrounding savannahs, and all the places you can explore throughout the resort, including the two well themed main pools. I doubt there will be much to inspire one to just explore the AoA resort, at least not for very long, but at AKL you can spend hours just poking around, stopping at lookout points to survey the animals on the savannah's. As you walk down any hall, regardless of whether or not you have a savannah view room, you will be compelled to stop at the large windows to see what animals are out on the savannah. Grab a drink, sit near a fire pit while the cast members posted at the lookouts tell you about the animals, don some night vision goggles to see the animals in the dark. That type of stuff is what sets the AKL experience apart. I will say, the restaurants weren't my wife's cup of tea, as she is not an adventurous eater, and some of the african and indian flavors didn't appeal to her, so research the food options and make sure thye will be to your liking. Location wise, if you have to jump on a bus at either AoA or AKL to get to a park, I doubt it will take significantly longer to get to any park from one resort versus the other.

Hope I've given you a few things to think about.....let me know if I convinced you!

Go ahead, call me a deluxe resort snob....!

We stayed at WL last year and yes its available this year and no its not really a money thing we just booked AoA because the kids are interested in the Lion King room. So it did take some convincing to get DH to agree to a value. Im just having second thoughts because I totally agree with the immersive experience you get at a deluxe. And I question just because Im afaird that AoA is going to be a zoo. The farthest from relaxing you can get. Especially with free dining and Pop guest being able to use the AoA resort via the bridge. Isnt that what everyone is going to want to do, stay at Pop for half the money and just walk over to AoA to check it out and eat and all that stuff.

Here I spent all that time convincing you what the AKL will be better....and you already know that yourself! I see your choice is more based on the kids interest in the Lion King room. It is them you need to convince!

Kids can be hard to convince, especially if young. A bunch of garish colorful giraffes as your headboard might be more appealing to a younger child than the real giraffes they will see at the AKL. You need to sell them on the real giraffes!

I second DisneyKidds (that's a long reply to quote! LOL)....but our choice, or I should say our kids choice was WL...

We had done both ASMovies and Pop so we weren't opposed to values but last year got a great pin and ventured into the world of deluxe...I have officially been converted!

I always looked at it like the room wasn't a big deal....you are there for the parks....but then to experience certain resorts....DisneyKidds has it exactly right....decorations vs immersement.

Our last trip I gave the kids the option of AKL or WL and they choose WL. I thought it wouldn't be anything special because we are from the Northeast (not exactly like but similar to North Pacific). We have log cabins and such so how much better could it be I thought? It was unbelievable. Exactly as DisneyKidds said with the Poly....you felt like you left Florida on I-4 and drove into Washington State when you drive up to WL

We also never had a bad experience at the values but the CMs were on a whole other level at WL....

And as MK is our favorite...the boat ride hands down beat waiting for a bus any day!

Now I will say that I heard wonderful things about the animals at AKL and think it would be awesome to experience. I know people have reported that both AKL and WL were "dark" in the rooms...basically not as bright colored as other resorts....it never bothered us.

We actually booked POFQ for early December for a quick trip looking to do Disney for not too too much...but looking at the holiday decorations, we still changed our rez the next day because we couldn't pass up WL for the holidays

I also think the idea of a suite AoA is very appealing especially as the kids get older but if I had a choice for $30 more...absolutely I would upgrade to AKL (or even look at WL if MK is a more frequent park).

Once the kids walk into the AKL, they will forget about AoA... It really does give the immersion experience. And, even without a Savannah room (great if you could), just walking from the lobby to look out onto the grounds to see all of the animals has always made my kids want to stay there.
Let us know which you decide!:goodvibes

I like hearing from people who have stayed at, and been happy with, the value resorts and recognize the differences that the better themed resorts provide. To me it's night and day, and the length of my original response might have had something to do with me reminding myself of those differences. I like that the value resorts make Disney more accessible, but they do compromise the experience in my opinion.

You are going to love the WL at Christmas. We always used to go the week after Thanksgiving (until my wife went back to teaching), and we always made sure to stay at the WL. If you ever do find yourself looking at the moderates and Port Orleans, do yourself a favor and stay at Dixie Landings....er...I mean Riverside. I think this is the one moderate resort that achieves the same immersive theming that the deluxe resorts do. You really feel like you are transported to the Old South. French Quarter doesn't do as good a job with taking you to another time and place.

As this question is about the resort and not the dining, moving to the Resort board.

$30 to upgrade from a value to a deluxe? Does this seriously require convincing?

AKL without a doubt. ::yes::

That is exactly what it was for us! The value made our first Disney trip with two young kids, 3 and 5 in the middle of being DXed with Autism...value was an affordable vacation far away from home (we're in Massachusetts). It was a wonderful foot in the door. We just have come to appreciate the hotel as much as the parks as part of the overall vacation.

Port Orleans is actually the one moderate I would like to try if we were going to squeeze in a quick trip. My daughter would love the new royal rooms along with my husband and son would love to fish in the river....might be a plan for a future trip....

I never thought about the POP folks coming over. That is exactly what I would do so I think you are right, it will be crazy!!

Totally go with AKL! We really want to stay there sometime. Just holding out until the kiddos are bigger so taking the busses to and from places won't be as big an issue since it takes longer to get to our favorite parks, Epcot and MK from there. Two little ones on the bus for that long, not fun.

I think you will LOVE the Animal Kingdom Resort. True it is out of the way a bit- but it is beautiful and one of my favorites :)

I never understood the bus thing. I don't notice much difference in travel time to parks between AKL and the other resorts. Now if you want to talk about just missing a bus and having to wait for the next one, that can be a bummer from any resort. lol.

:) I have to agree with the previous posters. AKL is Disney at its best. At AofA the room will be Lion King but at AKL the RESORT will be Lion King. The kids will get that...the Lion King is there from the minute you turn on to that property. The kids can see the entrance gate to AK from the car, then you pull up to the thatched security gate. The grasses get taller and the foliage becomes Africa. Then the resort is grand with the color of the buildings, more thatched roofs, soft drums and afrcian music playing. The lobby like WL is emmense with that huge window facing out to the savanna. Like WL there is a bubbling brook to the side of the lobby, the huge headress and artwork. It is a fun market place type atmosphere. You know you are in a Deluxe environment. The brook and water features are also outside near Mara and the pool. The pool is surrounded by lush vagetation with stone outcroppings...blah blah blah...can you tell I love the place?

We always stayed values before joining DVC. I promise you will not be disappointed with the choice. You will want to spend more time at the pool or talking to CMs so the resort is part of an attraction in itself. I know vacations are great for kids but I think AKL will fit Mom and Dad's idea of Lion King too and that is just as improtant.
