Great, had the camera all of two days and the baby got a hold of it and dropped it and the UV filter broke and the glass shattered...now there are tiny tiny glass dust particles that I can't seem to get out of the rim of the lens - any ideas? I tried blowing the dust away using a straw as I don't have a fancy puffer type thing and my husband said to wipe it but I was freaked out that I might ingrain the glass dust into the lens and scratch it. I did buy the replacement/damage policy from best buy and they have a cleaning once a year that I guess I may have to use if I can't get the stuff out....ughhhh...but hey I really do love the photos that come out of this camera...I so wish I'd bought it or the xti when DD was born....

You were right not to wipe the lens, another thing you might want to try is a air compresser set to a low volume. This might remove the fine particles of glass. After that I would still have it checked out and cleaned,

And wear some eye protection.

Use some "Scotch" tape (or similar tape like "Magic" tape) to pick out the tiny particles.

The performance of the camera is now questionable, for example it may now and forevermore give pictures with a blurry lower right corner.

Goggles, compressed air from those computer dust cleaners and doing it outside would be my recommendation. Afterwards, you might have to get it sent it to have it checked out to make sure nothing inside was joggled out. How far was the drop? Good thing you bought the policy from Best Buy...you might have to use it if your pictures aren't coming out very clear.

if the baby dropped it, did you take the baby to dr to have them check to make sure there is no glass in babies eyes..

I would try a blower brush.....

Wow thanks so much for the hints - the car is in the shop today so I'll have to go to best buy tomorrow. The baby was in a high chair at a restaurant and the camera dropped and the lens side fell onto one of the table leg/ends and shattered...I don't think anything flew upwards and hopefully her face was above the table...I so wanted to take this camera on vacation but I guess we will have to wait for it to come back from best buy's fixing place....ugh

just a thought..i'd take the lens off the body before you start messing with it...some of the stuff like canned air could mess up the sensor then you'd have 2 problems...and depending on how old baby is one of those baby boogie cleaners works to blow stuff of lens .

One time I had my camera bag open and on the kitchen table. The DW told the DS to clear the table for dinner so he grabbed it to put it away and most of my lenses fell out. The only breakage I had was the one lens that had a UV filter on it.

Which makes me think, did I get lucky that the only lens that hit the ground hard enough to cause damage was the one with the UV filter on it and the UV filter protected me. Or are UV filters just fragile pieces of glass and if I didn't have one on then everything would still have been justs fine?

happypooh, do you think your UV filter protected your lens from the fall or did it just cause more problems since it covered your lens with glass particles?
