Our kitchen remodel is coming close to completion.

We replaced our old back door with a 6 foot wide sliding glass door, and it opens up to a small deck-- 6 feet across, 3 feet of which are steps. The other 3 feet form a tiny deck-- big enough for s single chair.... or a Christmas tree!!!

I really want to find a Christmas tree of some sort that I can put there, so that every time I walk into the kitchen in the evening I can see it. Silly, I know, but I'm determined to do it.

Now, that's where my vision stops. Obriously, it's got to be a tree appropriate for NY winter-- so it has to be sonw, ice, rain, wind and cold weather appropriate. But do I want a lifelike prelit tree? A spiral tree? Something else? And how would I steady it outdoors on a deck, where I can't put stakes into the ground? (There are spindles on the deck, so on at least 2 sides I could tie it down. And there is an outdoor outlet.)

I'm open to ideas. I have no idea of the budget... except, of course, that we're both teachers and have lots of other Christmas stuff to buy.

But what do you see in that space???

Not a Christmas tree, that's for sure! :confused3

I don't even understand the concept of having a 3 foot deck, no less putting a tree on it. What's the point of a 3 Ft deck unless you're just actually using it as a landing to come in/out of the house via the kitchen --- and in that case, it's not a deck, it's the top landing of a set of steps.

Anyway... if you want to put a tree out there, I would just buy a real one (small) and buy some outdoor lights to put on it.

Are you also going to have a Christmas tree in your livingroom?

I understand your vision! We put a big prelit tree on our deck last year. My husband used fishing line to secure it. Worked just fine and looked beautiful with snow all over it!:thumbsup2

My parents put a pre-lit tree (artificial) on their deck and it looks so pretty during Christmas. It's the kind that comes in a type of urn and it's not a full size tree, it's about 4 feet tall. It's held up to snow, wind and rain. I'm pretty sure they bought it at Costco.

I think it's a great idea. From my kitchen I can't see my indoor Christmas tree which is in the family room. I'd love to look out my kitchen window and see a Christmas tree outside!

Thanks... that's exactly what I'm going for.

My old neighbor (we lived in townhouses back then) put her live tree on her deck one year! It was pretty.

I'd start shopping now at places like Target. I've found cute trees in urns there that can be outside. You can find outdoor lights (make sure they won't burn too warm I guess, I'm not good with those!).

I think it would be a great idea! Lots of folks decorate trees in their front yard. I sometimes put the small trees in urns by my front door on the porch.

Right. This one isn't about the neighbors; it wouldn't be visable to any of them. This is about me (well, OK, everyone in the family) being able to see Christmas lights as I make dinner, do schoolwork at the table, or do the dishes.

It's the region in front of the half of the slding doors that stays stationary. Figure it's about 3 feet square, with white spindles and a white railing on 2 sides, open (to the part with the steps) on the 3rd side, and the sliding glass door on the 4th side. It's adjacent to the landing at the top of the steps.

Maybe one of these??

ot these?http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lighted-Sp...-Pack/12080734 though I'm not sure how I would anchor it on a deck. I could always put the 2nd one in the front yard.

or this? http://www.walmart.com/ip/6-Multi-Co...ation/26619645 again, anchoring it is an issue

Our real Christmas tree will remain in the living room.

ETA...WAIT... I think I found the one I want:

http://www.amazon.com/Ft-Topiary-Wi...r=1-9&keywords=outdoor+pre-lit+christmas+tree

Thanks for the help. It was the search word "topiary" that did the trick :)

I like the last one, however, I don't see outdoor in the listing anywhere. I would be sure it is approved for outdoor; I wouldn't want your new deck to get hurt:)

Thanks for checking. But under the description it say:
"This charming pre-lit Christmas tree can be used to add holiday charm outdoors or in "

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea and like something I would do. Good luck finding the right tree or topiary. You'll love seeing it from the kitchen, and you'll be surprised how many family and visitors will also appreciate it.

NYCDiane, it's much like decorating a porch. Small space yes, but with lots of impact.
