DH said I can divert some overtime funds over the next couple of weeks for a gaming system, but I can't decide which one I want.

I have Nintendo DS lite and a game cube that we really never played with that much. I love trauma, zelda, and Animal Crossing. I am not really into sports games or war games. I really want guitar hero so those types of games are cool.
I am mostly a pc gamer - love Sims, tycoon games, Civ, and EQ2. DH loves EQ2, Civ, and Doom type games. Wasn't that thrilled with Halo.

I'm not sure which would be better for us - Wii or PS3. Can you play PS2 games on the PS3? I'd like lots of options for us and don't want something that will be obsolete quickly. DH is leaning towards the PS3 because of the blue ray, but I really haven't done any research on the systems.

PS3 can play PS2 games IF you get the correct system. The 40 GB system will not play PS2 games :confused3 Don't know why, that is what their website said last time I looked :confused3 .

The PS3 can also play BlueRay DVD's. Disney is putting out BLueRay. It also has Guitar Hero!. and several Doom type games.

I know nothing about the Wii except every time I see the name, I have to go to the bathroom. :rotfl2:

The XBox360 is a good sytems, but The PS3 is free to play on-line, unlike the XBox. Also XBox has a Bad help desk. I have spent the last 2 days trying to get something fixed that they haved known about from July. Still not fixed.

I have a PS3, DN has the Wii. Both are good systems and lots of fun game wise.

For me, the PS3 was a cheaper way to get a BluRay player AND get a cool game system. The graphics are outstanding on the games, but if you don't have an HD TV that might not show up for you as much. I bought mine last spring and it plays all my old PS2 games, which was another factor in my decision.

For DN, the Wii was all about fun games that she could play out at school. Guitar Hero, Wii Sports, Mario-she uses them all for stress reduction after a long day of classes.

the Xbox 360 just had too many technical problems for me. A friend of mine has had the dreaded Red Ring of Death THREE times!!!

Can't tell you anything on the PS systems, but I can tell you that DH and I love our Wii. :) We have a total blast with it.

If you do have any gamecube games that you like you would be able to play them on the wii.

DH has the XBox, XBox360, PS2, GameCube, DSLite and Wii. At least I think that's all we've got in the house. :lmao:

He'd never buy an XBox...either one...again. The XBox is in the closet, and the 360 is used mainly for DVD viewing.

Pretty similar story for the Playstation2. I don't remember the last time we even turned the thing on. DH decided against the PS3 and in favor of the Wii because of the next-generation gaming.

The kids are on the DSLites and Gamecube pretty regularly, but have taken to hooking the Gamecube games up through the Wii.

The entire family loves the Wii. I'm not a gamer, and I've spent hours playing on this thing. It paid for itself within the first 24 hours.

Same here. We are not "gamers" by any stretch but the kids have to fight with us to get the Wii. So much fun.

Judging purely from the games you mentioned, you should definitely get the Wii. You cannot play Zelda, Trama Center or Animal Crossing on anything besides Nintendo products. (Animal Crossing for the Wii is in development.)

Guitar Hero is available for all of the systems including the Wii.

The Wii also has MySims.

If you want a cheap Blu-ray player, go with the PS3. If you want a system to play video games, judging by your favorite games, you need to buy the Wii.

Your DH might like some of the PS3 games, but there is very little you would like (again, judging by the games you mentioned liking and disliking).

Go to the store and look at games on the shelf. If there is nothing you want for the PS3, there you go.

You can also go here: www.ign.com to look at the different games on the different systems.

Id go with PS3, PS2 games can be played on the 20, 60 and 80 GB HD. The 20 and 60 GB HD PS3's use an actual laser eye to read the disk and the 80 GB one uses emulation software. The 20 and 60 can play any PS2 game with no problem and the 80 can play most games but some have problems. PS3 also has Rock Band which is like GUitar Hero but instead of just playing guitar you also get a drum set and a microphone. Also PS3 will be getting Little Big Planet which has a ton of hype and is expected to be one of the best games to come out in 2008.

You can't play any other games until all your EQ2 characters are lvl 80 and your guild can finish all the new raid instances. Have you finished SoD yet?

Can't even think about other games. lol.

Our whole family loves our Wii. Zelda is so much fun on it. We also enjoy Guitar Hero and Mario Galaxy.

By your description of the game types you enjoy, I would get a Wii. I believe over all you will find more games to play on that system then on the PS3. Not only do you get the Wii games, but you can also play gamecube titles on it.. PLUS the online feature allows you to download (at a small fee) titles of older Nintendo systems, TurboGrafix 16, and Saturn.

I would get the Wii, you already have the game cube that isnt getting much use. You play the playstation the same way with the controller. We have both a PS2 and a Wii. DD and I prefer the Wii, Dh likes his Ps2.

Go for the Wii.:thumbsup2 It is just plain fun and a good introduction into the future of gaming.
Currently playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time from the N64 series, since you can download the old games, called "Virtual Console".

Do I want a PS3...yes. ;)
But I am not willingly to shell out the dough until FF13 comes out and the price takes a bit of a hike lower.

Maybe check the games list for the PS3 first. I am waiting on the PS3.

EQ1 is far superior to its younger brethren :snooty:

J/K :)

Judging by your game choices, I would say go Wii!

my DH and I have both the wii and ps3. we got the ps3 first because of the fact that it plays blue ray disks and plays games. I had a game cube before as well and thought i would like the wii better than the ps3 but so far i play the ps3 more. we have guitar hero and rock band for the ps3 and i am totally addicted. the graphics are also much better than the wii. the other thing i find agrivating about the wii is that you have to make sure the remote "eye" is in like with the receiver to play any of the games. Once you find the sweet spot in your living room it's fine but getting there is a pain. the games are very innovative for the wii though. if you already have the ds lite i would say go with the ps3 because a lot of the games that are on the ds are also on the wii. it's all a matter of taking a look at all the games available and trying to decide which you will enjoy more. check out www.gamefly.com for game reviews from people that play them which makes the review that much more dead on with how the game actually is.

anyways, hope i haven't bombarded you with information. no matter which system you go with they are both fun. I think they will both be around for a while. :thumbsup2

i own a 360, PS3 and a Wii and for me i like the 360 the best hands down...but after reading the games you like i would say go for a Wii, i would imagine you would get quite a bit of enjoyment out of it...i personally never play my wii and it just sits in a drawer lol but hey to each his own! if your into HD movies though the ps3 is the best choice in getting a cheap player..especially since HD-DVD is on its way out..and blu ray will in time be the winner of the format war so you would then be ready and could start building your HD library!

Thanks for the suggestions.
I am willing to try other games, but aside from Atari and Coleco Vision I have never had any gaming system other than Nintendo. I was wondering if the grass is greener in the PS world ;)

Lora, no worries about EQ2 (and I don't miss EQ1 corpse runs, ConcKahuna). I want desperately to be able to play my 57 fury in Kunark without getting killed enroute to the druid rings. and I want one of the new mounts :rotfl:
To be honest, I haven't played in a week because of my class this week and I am having w/drawals. At least my vitality is back up :thumbsup2

It's not that you don't want to play different games, it's that everything you listed as a fav is only available through Nintendo and other systems don't have games like them. The other part was the games you said you don't like, which are largely what the PS offers.

None of the systems really have a bunch of great RPGs, but the Wii has Zelda (not an RPG, but whatever) and the Xbox has some. The PS really is lacking in that area.

There is nothing wrong with be a NIntendo fan (its much cheaper for one thing).:thumbsup2

From this post I think you're leaning PS3. Go for it. Just go to the websites we mentioned and look at the games.

You must have the sensor bar set up wrong. The "sweet spot" should be huge and not hard to find at all. Or maybe it's your living room. lol What I mean is there are a few new sensor bars coming out that can be adjusted wider, so if you have a big living room they work better. Also, some of the games are really touchy--especially the older ones like Rayman. But the newer ones are better (well most of them).

As for DS games on the Wii. As far as I can think, none of the games are direct ports. They are the same franchise, but different challenges, different set ups, different games. Which makes the Wii a good fit, since DS owners will be able to play new versions of the games they love on the Wii.

But again, the OP can go for the PS3. It's a good way to grow up as a gamer ;) and try new things with way better graphics. The Wii is about innovative gameplay and fun franchise games, while the PS3 is a Blu-ray player with some nice games with fantastic graphics. Hopefully, the games will get better.
