I have an appointment with Glamour Shots on Thursday. I wanted to get a nice photo of myself for my husband for Christmas, and received an email for a free sitting and 8x10.

What is anyone's experience with this? I was told that I need to show up with clean dry hair, no makeup and 3 outfits.

Do I need to tip anyone (makeup person, hair stylist etc...)

Any and all comments please!

I did this a long time ago, I don't remember tipping and I didn't have to bring any outfits, they supplied them all for me.

I find glamour shots to look staged and usually not the best of photos. It used to be the rage in our town and I never saw a single one that I would say looked good. I much prefer regular photographer shots to be much superior to glamour shots

I am embarrassed to admit that my sister and I did this about 10 years ago. I just found our photos recently, and I had to :rotfl2: at them. We looked like hookers! What were we thinking :confused3 The best part was that we gave them out to our family and friends for XMas that year :rotfl:

The worst part of the entire experience was that after the "photo shoot," the person sat us down and had us order our package. We didn't even know what we wanted, and we felt very pressured to choose everything immediately. I didn't like that part of it at all.

My sister had this done and I really hated the make-up job they did. I could not recognize her and felt it took out all her vibrant individuality and made her look like any housewife in Kansas City wearing too much make-up.

She loved it though.

:rotfl2: :rotfl: Yes, I agree! I did it about 10 years ago and I too looked like a hooker. It was way too much makeup and of course there was some serious big hair still going on in 94 so it looked terrible, lol.

I also did it many many years ago. I think the pictures look okay although I much prefer more recent photos of myself, but at the time, they weren't that bad. It was extremely heavy makeup, however, and I think I ruined the t-shirt that I'd worn because it never all came out. I didn't need to bring any outfits. I was just told to wear a white t-shirt and then they draped cloth over me to make it look like I was wearing something. That was interesting. Another "outfit", they had me in a denim jacket over my t-shirt.

I don't recall tipping anyone either.

I'm sure things are different now. I know many locations closed after the novelty wore off, and now I see them making a comeback but it just doesn't seem the same as it was before.

:rotfl: Same here! They did both of our hair so it looked huge :rotfl2: I am currently faced with a dilemma, though...what do I do with these framed 8x10's that I found??? I mean, I can't throw them out, because they're just too funny, but I'm not putting them on display either!! Someday my future kids are going to find these and laugh so hard at mom and auntie's "Glamour Shots" I'm sure :rotfl:

Will they give you a hard time about the amount of makeup they apply?

I am also having them keep my hair straight, no curls for me. I remember the big hair days and blue eyeshadow! LOL

Also, I have fair skin, and not many wrinkles (knock wood), I don't want a airbrushed picture of myself, I want a natural picture, not one that people who know me as who is in the picture!

I guess I will have to get my "timeshare talk" mentality on before ooing. Wish me luck and keep those stories coming... I still have time to cancel and run for my nearest Target photo center!

I had some done about 11 yrs ago and I love them. I wish I still had them. I don't know what happen to them at all. Probably gave them all out and forgot to save one for me. They are what they are "Glamour shots". I think they're suppose to be fancy head shots like the stars have done to get jobs(kwim). I didn't have to bring any outfits either. Are you doing something "special" for your dh and maybe that's why they asked you to bring some outfits :confused3 :confused3 !

I think it's o.k. to look beautiful or glamerous but they do such heavy make-up and airbrushing that you don't even look like yourself!! I want a photo(any type) to be a true representation of me at that time period. I don't think Glamour Shots do that. Just my opinion. What about going to a reg. photographer for a nice Christmas photo?

Well, I've done Glamour Shots twice.

First time was 10 years ago, I was 13. I had them curl my hair - big mistake. I looked like a hooker, my hair was so teased out... it was horrible. And they didn't have many clothes for a 13 year old, so I ended up wearing some horrible colored leather jackets. Back then I love it, now I just look at the pictures and shake my head.

Second time was for high school graduation. I had my hair done straight, the girl did an excellent job. My make up was good except I have very fair skin and blond hair and they made my eyebrows looks unnaturally dark. That is my only complaint. I really liked the pictures, but I wish they would take more so I would have had a better selection to choose from.

A sitting consisted of 4 outfits - 4 pictures in each outfit. They have different backdrops and props to use. I thought it was fun to get my hair and makeup done. I'd definitely do it again. My best friend has gone there several time and all her pictures look amazing. I think you just have to communicate the look you're going for and be involved in the whole process. My first time consisted of a lot of face pictures... the second time I had them change up my poses a lot and it turned out much better.

I will mark this thread and post my GS pictures tonight. :teeth: Don't laugh!

I believe GS uses stage makeup--the thick heavy stuff so that it looks good on camera. I can spot a GS a mile away! My favorite is when real estate agents feel the need to use them in their ads. I don't know why this makes me chuckles..but it does.

I think they sell the experience, personally. You do kinda feel like a big wig. My mother has had them done. I used to want to have them done a while ago. But after reviewing how headshots are really done, I kind of lost interest in the whole process. :(

Have a good time, though! The idea to have someone else do the hair and make up for a change is wonderful and I have seen some good pics come out of the sessions.

As much as I hate to admit this, I used to work for Glamour shots way back years ago when it was the cool thing to do.

At least back then, yes the make-up was very thick much like stage makeup and it was very heavily applied. The hair was teased up and hair-sprayed to no end. I was a photographer there and ruined more clothing by getting the makeup on my clothes and not getting it out. After working at one, I would never go to one myself. The pictures end up being way too over the top.

If you are looking for somewhere to go to have a nice portrait done along the lines of a mall type place, I would suggest checking out The Picture People. There style is alot more down to earth. They show mostly babies and children in the displays but they do adult sittings as well and can do a nice job.

I gave this as a gift for a babysitter 8 years ago, she was going to a dance & I thought how fun for her to get her hair & make-up done. Well they only style the FRONT of your hair :confused3 She had to beg them to do the back. It never occured to me.

and yes I ended up resembling a hooker! Like others have said though, when you are 17 though you think it looks like the best picture you will ever take! Last year, my daughter was 16 and wanted to do it. I went ahead and took her..she of course looked great. I don't remember the name of the group that did it but it was for a charitable organization. The picture people kept some and the org. kept some of the money. Anyway, they were really nice. My daughter asked to do her own eye makeup and they let her, She vetoed the poofy hair they said o.k. When she got to the sitting, she had chosen a few things and they made suggestions for accessories. All in all it was actually a pretty nice experience for her. They did have the same high pressure buy the biggest package possible tactics in order to get your free 8X10. And if I remember correctly there were like 2 shots out of 30 you could use for the free one. Not sure if Glamor Shots works the same way with you being able to say too much makeup or whatever. My pictures were too long ago to even remember!

Ok, I did this about 9 years ago and it was quite an expierence. They asked how I wanted my make up and I told them natural and light as I don't wear any. The pics turned out great and it was a lot of fun. In March-April of 2004, I had it done again, as I wanted good pregnancy photos (I had no stretch marks and wanted to show it off.) Those turned out awesome. I am so happy I did those. Then in Feb this year, I had them do some Valentine shots of my 9 month old DD. No makeup or anything and just one simple outfit. Those are absolutely perfect. She was playing with the flowers and laying on pillows, way too cute. I had a hard time not spending $800 on those pics. So it really all depends on how you want your pics to look and none of mine turned out to look like a hooker.

Have fun though, that is the most important thing!!

I did mine when I was 13 and with all the make-up they put on me I look like I am atleast 21 in the picture. They didn't overdo the makeup because my mom wouldn't let them and they didn't give me the big hair, so the pictures turned out pretty nice and I didn't look like a hooker!!!

All of the pics I've seen from them look WAY overly done and fake!

Why don't you just got to your normal salon and have them do your hair and makeup, then got to Sears or someplace like that to get the pics done? You'll probably end up spending way less money and actually like your end results better!
