I love DH and he knows that I love to take pictures, or DD8. We live at the beach so pictures are always being taken there. I have the Canon Rebel XS with the EFS 18-55mm lens and the 75-300mm lens. Yes before you ask I have read the book and I was hoping to take a photography class during the summer but it did not work out. Not enough interest and it was cancelled. I also have the latest adobe photoshop, that I do know how to use.

Anyway, I get some good shots in all the settings it comes programmed with, BUT I wanted to know if someone had some good pointers in the manual settings.

We go to Disney 2-3 times a year and I am not paying for photopass again. Really really not happy with the quality of pictures from March (how hard is it to center my family FCOL...) any way we are doing the Halloween party and I was hoping for some tips on getting some good shots after dark.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is a good place to start. It is a pretty quick read and will usually only cost you about $20.

Do you have a tripod and shutter release cable for your camera?

The nice shots you see around the parks after dark were mostly taken with a tripod.

You may need less help than you think. Before worrying about going to manual settings try a tripod (and a remote shutter release of the self-timer) with Aperture mode and exposure compensation. This mode works just as well as manual for most night photography but with a lot less work.

yup, gotta agree here. a tripod and a remote shutter release will go a lot farther in better low light pictures than any manual settings.

Yes, tripod and remote release, actually, you could get the IR Remote or just put your camera on a timer and us it that way. I like the IR Remote with the camera set in 2 second timer.

Also, learn the following:

Rule of Thirds
Negative Space
Fill the Frame

All three are about composing a shot, personally, I love negative space in my shots!

Leave the 75-300 off the camera after dark if your not using a tripod. I have that lens and it's sooooo slow, but it's good for day shots. You can get some pretty decent low light and night shots with the 18-55 kit if you leep it wide.
