Ohio Train Derailment

I don't have an issue so much with the media as I do the sources feeding the media. I can't really blame people for skepticism that we aren't getting the whole story when you have prior things like Flint.

That said, I don't believe most conspiracy theories because it would require way too many people to participate in the lies; everyday people whose families live in those areas, drink the water, breathe the air, etc.
I’m shocked people get so defensive when it comes to the news media.

I certainly heard about it. I think the key details are that the NTSB will be responsible for the investigation of the rail incident, but the US EPA is only observing because the Governor of Ohio hasn't asked for federal help. Not sure about the Governor of Pennsylvania, especially since this is right on the border. Apparently the Governor of Ohio authorized the breaching controlled burning of the materials on the recommendation of Norfolk Southern.

Also - there was a bunch of controversy over a reporter who was arrested at one of the Governor's press conferences (on the disaster response) at a school gym. The Governor has objected to his arrest, which was apparently ordered by an Ohio National Guard General who was at the site and thought that he was interring with the Governor's press conference when he finished up his report as the Governor was starting his presser. The Ohio Attorney General has dropped all charges against the reporter, but it remains to be seen if the reporter sues.

ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, AP, Reuters, ... Do we need more? Should I link them all here? This story has been covered by everyone since the very beginning. If you didn't hear about it, that's on you.

Thank you. Pretty much all those and any news outlet that isn't strictly internet based. If they put out a print publication or are are broadcast on television, they have been reporting on this story.

Do you the coverage was disproportionate to the balloon fiasco? Do you think it was given enough weight? Do you think the seriousness of the situation was covered in the beginning.
I think the biggest complaint is not that it wasn’t covered is that wasn’t covered enough. Some people think this will turn out to be a very serious situation …time will tell.
The coverage has picked up over the last few days. I never said I didn’t know about it I’ve known about it since day one.

Which mainstream media? What is your definition of extensive?

All of them. Do you understand what that term means?

By extensive, I will say without specifically searching it out, I've seen at LEAST 3 articles or televised stories about it every day since. I read an extensive amount of news stories twice a day and watch the evening news, both local and national.

The balloon story is borderline funny, and has taken on a life of its own. This one is not. SNL isn't going to be satirizing this incident...

You are hearing about the balloon because more people latch onto stories that have a mystery element than a massive environmental disaster like this one.

Let’s hope that now that it’s starting to grow legs sme good reporters will get the bottom of what actually happened. It’s a shame they haven’t gotten the helip they need.

My definition of extensive would be comparable to what you see when there’s any big natural disaster or tragic event. 24/ 7 news coverage. Some people think this is a lot more serious than the coverage it has gotten.
Im not sure why your tone is so hostile.

They already determined what actually happened. Now it's a game of finger pointing while no one takes responsibility for it.

The last time we had 24/7 news coverage was for what? 9/11?

This does not match that, I don't think. There are other things happening in our country that also deserve attention right now.

Hurricanes, riots, school shootings, Ukraine war….the list goes on. It is a very quick news cycle these days as we go from one catastrophe to the next.

I love how some were really angry that the first balloon was allowed to cross the continent and wasn't shot down until off the coast and over water, and now that a few more have been shot down more quickly, it's an overblown 'balloon fiasco.'
I thought the thing was a distraction from day one. Look here… don’t look there.

This is a great synopsis of some of the critical issues - the controlled burning being a main issue. I believe the EPA is supposed to make that decision and it sounds like the state and the rail company did a variation of their own. It will all be disclosed eventually.

The company itself has some safety issues and problems in that realm and certainly the DOT should have made a statement much sooner. Pete Buttigieg didn't make a real official statement until yesterday I believe.

You said 24/7 coverage. To me, that means they aren't talking about anything else. I haven't seen anything covered to that extent since 9/11.

Cable news is more apt to cover something nonstop such as the BLM Riots, a trial, hurricane etc. The day Russia invaded it was non stop coverage on cable news.

This story is now the lead story on CNN. Unfortunately it is because it is spiraling into an environmental disaster worse than originally thought.

Nobody is keeping anything secret. My gosh. Some lawmakers are already finger pointing and trying to blame the wrong person for this whole disaster, as usual.

I don't know what anyone here is talking about....that it's a "secret". I read the NYT, WSJ and WP every single day....and there have been big stories about this nearly every day since it happened. There's one today in the NYT.

The conspiracy theories are insane.....but the seriousness of the fallout is obviously very scary. I hate to see things like this happen, especially in areas already hard hit by the loss of manufacturing in our country. Anyone who owns a home there....man, imagine trying to sell and move now.
