Ohio Train Derailment

What do they not want us to look at?

Whatever it is must be pretty awful, because in the center left/right news sources I read WSJ, NYT, WP.....they're all listing some pretty horrific details about the chemicals spilled and then burned in the derailment? Perhaps a zombie apocalypse? Honestly, some days in this country I think it might be a relief. Or perhaps a well placed asteroid.

Or I guess it's the conspiracies about someone who deliberately caused it for (fill in the blank) reasons. Or....another person or entity who won't fix it for (fill in the blank reasons)....when all that really is......is about money and litigation until lots of lawyers line their pockets with millions and millions of dollars.

The poorest in that area, and I'm going to guess that it's not a super wealthy area.....will be hurt. They won't be relocated or made whole and will suffer the consequences. Just like every other major disaster....manmade or otherwise....in this country.

I don't know what anyone here is talking about....that it's a "secret". I read the NYT, WSJ and WP every single day....and there have been big stories about this nearly every day since it happened. There's one today in the NYT.

The conspiracy theories are insane.....but the seriousness of the fallout is obviously very scary. I hate to see things like this happen, especially in areas already hard hit by the loss of manufacturing in our country. Anyone who owns a home there....man, imagine trying to sell and move now.
There seems to be a lot of consensus on social media that the story wasn't given enough coverage from the beginning. I think it stems from the fact that the people haven't gotten any help from government agencies. The people were told to go back home and it was safe. Is it safe..I don't know.

There's always going to be conspiracy's around any event. The wildest thing is that Netflix made a movie about this last year and some of the people in that town were extras.

I can understand coming at it like social media put pressure on the government to take action but just saying it hasn't gotten enough coverage because people haven't gotten any help from government agencies is not accurate.

That right there would have made me pack up and move if I lived there. I mean, talk about a warning. It's very sad.

There will be health consequences from this for a long time. Look at what happened with the burn pits in Iraq and everything that has been found to be caused by being exposed to those, even only briefly, in servicemembers.

It's kind of a quirky movie. I think it's based on a book from the 80's. I was half paying attention when I watched. I'll probably go back and watch again. I'm sure a lot of people will be watching White Noise now. I don't think I'd move based on a fictional movie. Talk about art imitating life.

Part of the 10 freeway in Tucson has been closed and there is a 3 mile radius shelter in place order for a nitric acid spill from a tanker crash. I guess there's lots of scary chemicals being transported around that we normally don't give much thought to.

I saw it on the National news (ABC and CBS) for at least 3 days in a row. By the fourth day, I was like, what is new about it? Because it seemed like they kept reporting about the derailment, the hazardous chemicals being spilled, and clean-up.

Posted too soon, another news story tonight on CBS. pictures on social media re rashes, NTSB looking at broken wheel thingy

I was watching the news today. I don't know if anyone saw that poor woman who was told it was safe to go back home by men in hazmat suits-that's real assuring. Erin Brockovich was on today telling people if your gut is telling you something, listen to it (in response to a woman that went home and developed a rash on her face). In 75 (I think, or 74), a train carrying bombs started exploding. Destroyed a little town near the tracks. We were all told to evacuate 10 miles away. My friend's mom took us to William Land Park, got KFC and relaxed there to get away. It was made unlawful to carry bombs on trains after that. (amazingly???)

Well, today the story is still very high up in NYT and WSJ coverage. They had a town meeting last night so that the town's residents can get "answers". Representatives from the Railroad company pulled out a couple of hours earlier citing concerns for the safety of their employees. There have been threats. I don't blame those "representatives"....whoever they are. I wouldn't go into the town with a population full of people with the probability that many are gun owners. Nope. I'm not saying that the railroad doesn't owe them answers....and compensation. But again, this will be fought out in the courts with lawyers lining their pockets with the lion's share of the payout. It'll take years and years.

In the meantime, if I rented there...or owned a house that wasn't worth much to start with....I'd be looking to move.

The derailment happened 13 days ago.

People who owns homes that aren't worth very much aren't likely to have the funds to just pick up and move.

Oh, I totally understand that. I checked out prices there on Zillow last night....a lot of homes under 100K. And I know....easier said than done, just saying what I'd do. 100K isn't a lot of money for a home really anywhere in our country these days. I'd move just to avoid the literal *swarms* of attorneys that are descending on that little town as we speak.

Yeah, I think what is happening is that it's worse than they thought, so news coverage is picking up again. People who are showering are breaking out in rashes. One woman quoted in the NYT who was outside the evening of the "controlled burn" said she felt like her tongue was "scalded" and had blood in her stool for days. Not great. I mean, I guess it makes sense that they did the controlled burn....lesser of two evils I guess? They didn't want that stuff leaching into the ground water, but plenty of it already had. Just a terrible situation.

Again, you don't get it. Many of these people don't have the resources for down payments, maybe their credit isn't good enough. Maybe they can't afford even a cheap house right now at the high interest rates. They might not even be able to afford the moving truck right now.

I saw somewhere that people were being given $1K vouchers. That's nice. But then what do they do a few days later when that's gone?

What a mess. Someone needs to back up the money truck. Fast.
