We were thinking about going to Ohana's in August during our next trip home...I was watching a show on the Food Channel that featured Disney Restaurants....they said Ohana's serves food "family style"....some salads before, then meat, chicken & shrimp(??) kebobs....First, I'm allergic to shellfish and have a severe reaction to even the smallest amount ....second, my DS is your basic PB&J and pasta butter type of kid....does Ohana's have a kid's menu to accomodate DS.....I went to to a Japanese restaurant once where they cook the food on an open grill in front of you...although I didn't order the shrimp, my steak/chicken was cooked on the same grill that the shrimp had been cooked and my throat closed up as I was eating my chicken from my allergy.... what do you think...is this a good spot for an allergic father and a picky 4 y.o.???? We've visited the Poly & saw Ohana's and loved it, but never ate there....

They can cook the meat (steak, turkey, & pork) separate from the shrimp.
I believe they can give kids typical kid food as well. However, my boys loved the meat, fried rice, and chicken wings.

We just ate at Ohanas a couple of weeks ago. My daughter had grilled cheese and french fries and my son had just french fries. I believe they have all kids menu basics. If you are that allergic, you probably should not eat the skewered beef and chicken as it is all cooked together on the open grill. Personally, I thought the meat was rather tough anyway. My favorite part was what they brought initially...fried rice, yummy chicken wings, fried wontons, etc. You could make a meal of these alone. I did as I really didn't enjoy the tough meat and shrimp (you had to peel it). The kids will like the coconut races and hula hoop contests. I think you should try it as we really enjoyed ourselves.

I would let your server know about the allergy and Im sure they will do everything to accomodate you. DS is allergic to peanuts and when we mentioned this the chef came over and explained everything, what was safe, etc... We have found all restaurants in WDW to be great about his allergy.

As for the kids meals, they dont have an official kids menu, but just ask and your server will list the options for you. They are the meals from the Kona Cafe which include grilled cheese, mac & cheese, hot dogs, chicken fingers, etc...

I have found that if you notify your server about your concerns they are FABULOUS at the WDW restaurants about taking extreme caution and they take it very seriously too.
I understand what you mean - my best friend has a red shellfish allergy AND is allergic to nuts and eggs. We have to be so careful and she never takes anything for granted when it comes to eating out!
Have fun and enjoy ohanas - it is great!

Thanks for the pointers --- it's definitely sounds worth it even if I do go into anaphylactic shock over my skewered beef --- I will definitely consult with the chef/cook on how the food is prepared first -- I don't want my throat to close up and miss all that Disney Magic..........
