Ohana's Nasty Shrimp

Can someone explain to me how you de-vein peel and eat shrimp without peeling them? They'd either have to be already peeled and de-veined or they would be un-peeled and still have the vein in them. A de-veined shrimp will be cut down the back to form a little valley and the vein is then removed. I've never heard of a shrimp that still had the shell on them but were de-veined unless maybe they give them an enema or something! :lmao:

I was there this past Tuesday and the shrimp we got was definitely not peeled and definitely NOT de-veined. I'm getting the impression that some folks either don't know the difference or just don't mind.

That's the point i was going to make -- you can't de-vein an unpeeled shrimp. Peel and eat shrimp are a pain in the rear.

 We have an ADR for O'Hana for our first night and now I am reconsidering it. The shrimp is the only thing I eat and I am afraid to take the chance and have the shrimp not de-veined. Plus reading about the hit and miss service lately.

This trip will be somewhat on a budget and I hate to waste that much money on a nasty meal...

I've seen shrimp that are unpeeled and deveined - that's what "easy peel" usually is. What they do is they make a cut in the "back" of the shrimp to devein it and make it easier to peel. Any "easy peel" shrimp at the grocery store are done this way, I have some in my freezer right now - easy peel & deveined.

That said, I like the shrimp at Ohana. They were really good when I was there and while peeling is a pain (it ruins a manicure!) I don't remember having to devein them.

You most certainly can get unpeeled-deveined shrimp. I buy them all the time. These have been cooked but I buy them raw like this all the time.

BTW.....when we ate at Ohana in October of 2009 the shrimp were not peeled or deveined.

That's what I was going to say. It's very easy to devein a shrimp and leave the rest of the peel on and I've had them that way at different places. I can't personally say how ours were at 'Ohana, I don't remember (really hate peel & eat shrimp - too much work for what you get).

I love the grilled shrimp, steak if cooked medium, fried dumplings, salad, and bread pudding.

It isn't my own requirement to go to O'hanas for each visit to WDW, but everyone else gets sad if we don't visit there, so it is kind of a ritual now.

I also buy the raw, unpeeled, deveined shrimp. Here in South Carolina most of the shrimp we get for shrimp boils and other recipies is peel-and-eat. But it's usually always deveined.

Honestly that was the biggest disappointment of that meal.. I couldn't wait to have skewers and skewers of shrimp since I love it so much, but when they plopped it on my plate I couldn't believe they weren't deveined! I think I had the patience to clean 5 or so before I got fed up wielding a knife with gooey hands... I went in expecting EZ peel shrimp (slit shell and deveined) but no clue where I got that idea from. My Dad insisted that thats how grilled shrimp always is in the south, but I dunno. VERY gross - its the first time I have been served them that way anywhere. I probably won't go back! :rolleyes1

Ate there last month, and my wife - who does not eat seafood - actually made the comment to me as I was stuffing my face with shrimp that they weren't deveined. I was a bit embarassed because I hadn't noticed, and I'm the one who's big on seafood.

But you are right. They aren't. And that's just nasty.

I don't understand the popularity of that place. Our breakfast was even worse. Besides the food and poor service, they first tried to seat us at what looked to be a rectangular table turned sideways so that seating was at the short end - with two chairs and place settings on each end. (this is the area on the backside of the grill) Seriously, there was no way we were going to sit there and insisted on another table. Even the hostess made a comment to us that she wouldn't want to sit there either.

Well, I was wrong. I hate it when that happens.

We ate here years ago, back when they still served the potatoes!! We had an ok experience...stuffed in a corner and all food brought out in 2 minutes, then never saw our server again... food was ok. It has taken me years to convince DH to try it again. Especially now that the menu is a bit different. So I made an ADR for April 20th at 4:40pm. Well I keep reading all this nasty stuff about the service, food, wait times, I just canceled it!! Party of 4 is up for grabs :rotfl: I think I would rather eat a Reuben and fries at the Plaza for dinner that night...

I really wish I had not clicked on this thread. :scared1: I know nothing about shrimp -- I just eat what is brought to me on a platter -- usually breaded but I do LOVE the shrimp at Ohana. Now the next time when I eat there I am going to be hesitant in eating them for fear of chomping on a big pile of POO!:scared1:

Ugh! My DH ate his weight in shrimp last time we were there. He knows they weren't de-veined.. I informed him, thinking he'd slice them open and do some surgery. Nope. He didn't care. Did the same thing last week at Vero beach.. Then again, not much phases him. He's eaten squirrel and countless pig and goat parts that make me ill just thinking about.

I like the pot stickers and the steak, thank you.

We love 'Ohana but my DH is the only one that eats the shrimp. DDs & I don't eat shrimp any way other than fried. I think peel & eat shrimp just looks gross. One more reason to avoid them...

Our Whole experience at O'Hana's was awful, we paid OOP for this meal. This had to top the worst meal and EXPERIENCE(cause it wasn't JUST the food) that DH and I have ever paid for in 20 yrs of marraige. I know alot like it, and have a good time, but we did not, and won't be back again. :scared1:

We've eaten at Ohana at least 12 times in the last 7 years and our shrimp was always deveined.

We loved the shrimp! The first skewer was a bit overcooked but all the rest were cooked to perfection and fabulous. The night we went, it was deveined and very easy to slide the peel off.

So I did a bit of research and a lot of people (not just on this board) complain about the shrimp not being de-veined. I haven't been so can't opine but looking at some pictures folks posted (although its hard to tell) they don't look de-veined. I can't imagine sometimes they are de-veined and sometimes not, so somebody is wrong.

Shrimp was excellent on our Sept. 2010 trip. Peel and eat shrimp is VERY common at many restaurants around the southwest states and Mexico so I'm used to it.

I've had dried out overcook skewers at Ohana but simply asking for something less cooked brought us some perfect food every time.

Well I am confused :confused3 - how can it be de-veined some times and not others? I love the shrimp at O'Hana but am not paying that much on taking a chance its not de-veined. Yuck! I just don't know what to do.

I hear you...Let me say this: I am a FREAK about the cleaning of shrimp. I clean BOTH sides , always. If you to the market and order shrimp cleaned, they only do one side. well, I always go home and do the other!

In december, when we ate there, I really think I would have noticed if it were NOT deveined :confused3 And man, were they good!! popcorn::

Then again, I DID have two Lapu-Lapu's that may have impaired my judgement...:happytv: I am laughing, but feeling  at the thought of eating "poo stuffed shrimp", as a PP said.
Sometimes, ignorance IS really bliss!
