Ohana's Nasty Shrimp

I love the grilled shrimp, steak if cooked medium, fried dumplings, salad, and bread pudding.

It isn't my own requirement to go to O'hanas for each visit to WDW, but everyone else gets sad if we don't visit there, so it is kind of a ritual now.

I agree, we eat there every trip. The trick to the shrimp (if it is not overcooked) is to eat it as soon as it is served, if possible. After it gets cooled, the shell tends to stick on them.

And I agree the steak needs to be medium, or it is too dried out & chewy.

They also have me spoiled on the bread pudding. The only way I eat bread pudding now is with the Bananas Foster topping

Well I am confused :confused3 - how can it be de-veined some times and not others?

Taking a guess here ... You can buy bags of deveined shrimp, and you can buy bags of it not deveined. I'm sure Disney has a supplier that provides all their shrimp, and maybe they sent a batch of un-deveined shrimp over.

? - I guess I'm confused ..

If the shrimp has the shell ON (hence PEEL and EAT) doesn't that mean the vein would still be there?

I always scrape the "black stuff" out of peel and eat .. at least I think I do - it's been a few years since I had it..

We ate at Ohana this past Tuesday. Do people actually eat that nasty shrimp? Not only was it incredibly hard to peel the shrimp looked like it had just had a big meal if you know what I mean! Just for the record, that dark filling in the middle isn't some kind of yummy stuffing. YUCK!

Yuck...I agree!

But, I do have a question - how big were these shrimp? And for anyone who has eaten there many times - when did we have to start peeling the grilled shrimp?

My experience is quite antiquated as I rarely go to buffets or all you care to eat places at Disney anymore - too much food for me.

My last experience at 'Ohana involved 2 kinds of shrimp - the steamed peel and eat that were brought to the table in a bowl and then grilled on skewers which were already peeled and deveined. I do know the steamed are not listed on the menus anymore.

I liked the steamed ones a little, but not the big tough grilled ones. And if they are not deveined - too much for me!

My complaint about the shrimp was why make peel n eat slabbered in sauce? I don't mind getting sauce over my hands for wings, but from peeling off the shell that I don't get to eat anyway? Why bother.

On a side note, DH made the Ohana Coriander wings (recipe from the Chef Mickey's cookbook) the other night and they were delicious!

I love Ohana and I love shrimp, but I NEVER eat Ohana's shrimp. They gross me out majorly...they are so big and gnarly! That being said, I think that they are cooked in the shells because that is supposed to enhance the flavor.

ITA! I've only eaten there once - but I don't see the attraction. Besides the fact that the shrimp aren't deveined, they smell and taste like ammonia. Don't even get me started on those dried out meat/chix skewers or that pasta that's all stuck together, dried out, and hard as a rock!
Others have had wonderful experiences and I'm glad they did, but OHana's is one place I won't have the "pleasure" of dining in again.....
Wow - didn't mean to be so negative... Sorry.

I haven't had the shrimp at O'hana's, but elsewhere we tend to pass on shrimp or fish that is mushy or smells of ammonia or bleach. :crazy2:This often indicates the seafood is not at all fresh and the chemicals are used to mask the smell. If the shrimp isn't deveined we just remove it although we shouldn't have to.:sad2:

An ammonia smell in seafood is a result of spoilage/deterioration and should be thrown out asap. I purchased some "fresh" blue crab over the holidays that had the funk, OUT with the trash it went!!
