Okay, so I'd read all sorts of threads that had me worried about going to Ohana again, but I thought we'd try it one last time, just to be sure. I'm glad we did.
Check in worries were unfounded, in my recent experience, as were the concerns about the service. Food wasn't as good as it used to be, but it was still very good.
The details:
DH and I had a 5:10pm Ohana ADR on Jan. 23rd.
Got there early because we wanted to check out the stores, then grabbed some chairs in the lounge area to wait. Lounge areas were packed because of the football game, so couldn't get anywhere near the bar, but a CM came by regularly to check if we needed drinks.
People were in line at the checkin desk from about 4:15 on. Two CMs showed up at 4:45 to start checking people in, which is when I joined the line. It was almost to Kona at that point. We were checked in well before 5pm, and our pager went off almost immediately. We were seated, with bread and salad, by about 5:10.
Window seat for two, just off the coconut trail, nice view of the castle. There were a number of large parties around, including a wedding, and lots of kids, but it wasn't as noisy as I'd feared. They had so many kids they had to run a second coconut race immediately after the first, 'cause they ran out of brooms. It was a lot of fun to watch, especially since we weren't in the coconut fallout zone by the aisle.
Servers were prompt and stopped by regularly. Only once did we have to flag a Cousin down for more meat, but they'd been by a lot already so that was reasonable IMO. We got drink refills when we needed them, dishes came out at a reasonable speed...no real concerns.
Bread was good, but really didn't do more than taste it. Same with the salad. Potstickers were awesome. Noodles were good, and DH liked the vegetables. The bread pudding was awesome, although the ice cream melted a bit too quickly.
And the meat...ah, the meat. DH is a carnivore, and I'm a seagull (I have a shrimp addiction). He had a whole lot of beef, plus some chicken and pork. I had a whole lot of shrimp (25) plus one piece of beef and a bite of chicken. Beef was tender, mostly cooked medium, and DH had one piece that was medium-rare. Chicken and pork were good, or so he says.
Shrimp were good, not tough or overcooked, although they were not as easy to peel as they used to be, so there may be a quality difference compared to what they used to serve a few years ago. Only noticed major vein issues in a few of the shrimp, but they definitely weren't deveined. Not a big deal, though.
There was a vegetarian at the next table, and she was brought out plates of tempura vegetables, tofu, and a bunch of other stuff I missed hearing the names of. The server made sure she knew she could ask for more of any of the items. I did overhear her tell the server at the end of the meal that she was completely stuffed, so it must have been good.
Overall, I'm glad we went, and it will stay on our favourites list. While some people may have had a bad or less than favourable experience, that doesn't seem to be the norm for the restaurant. Our experience was great!
