Ohana... Coconut BREAD? Really?

Thanks. I'll call and have it notated.

Kind of disappointing that vanilla ice cream is the only option though. :( MAybe I'll let the rest of the family go there and just do my own thing. They're all super excited about it. I've been meh from the start.

Make sure you have your allergy noted on EVERY SINGLE ADR. This way chefs can ensure that nothing you're served has any coconut. You never know where it may be found. Coconut oil is being used more often these days than in the past I believe.

Do you have a contact or inhalant allergy or is it just ingestion? You're aware of the coconut races in the restaurant, right?

You know I went back and looked through my pictures and back then, they served the fried wonton chips. I guess, it has changed. Because I swear I didn't remember any bread served with the meal. Bummer because those wonton chips were good with the dipping sauce. Anyways, they serve so much food that you really don't need to fill up on bread anyways ;-)

True...but if it's the coconut bread in the bread pudding and the only option given is plain vanilla ice cream, I will not be happy. That's really not a fair or equal trade.

Now...if they give me an option of something chocolate from Kona...I won't complain at all. :lmao:

It's just ingestion. It and everything else I've eaten comes back up. I've questioned my doctor repeatedly, and he's said that yes, this is a form of allergic reaction. I tend to only react if it's in the meat or milk form. The oil is hit or miss but I'm usually ok with it as long as it's not a huge tub of popcorn.

Here is a photo of what they made for my girlfriends father this past February when we were at 'Ohana. Looks pretty good to me. Make sure to request something besides just the plain vanilla icecream.

Back in the days of Chef TJ being at 'Ohana people with allergies got these really amazing desserts. When we were there in August, my kids were offered ice cream and fruit. One of my girls was celebrating her birthday and they put a candle in an orange wedge (she's allergic to citrus fruit so I wasn't pleased but she was full anyway; she would have forced herself to eat something tastier and ended up with a bellyache anyway so probably for the best).

I'll have to wait until I get home to see it. The school computers won't show pictures on boards. :(

If all my choice is is ice cream, I'll risk losing everything I've eaten. I'm sorry, but that's really not fair. At all.

Personally, if it is that important to you I'd just skip this ADR. You can always eat at Kona. I've had my allergy for over 14 years now and noone has ever made me something special because of it. Basically, they just tell what I can't eat. We did a cruise over the summer on Disney and they would just point out on the menu what I couldn't eat. I would never expect something special. Now, since O'hana is a family style type meal I'm sure they are limited in what they can offer as a replacement. It is not like they are a sitdown restaurant and can whip up something new. I think, you are asking for a lot, it isn't like you have gluten allergy and can't eat more than half the items on the menu. Just my opinion so don't flame me. I'd be happy with ice cream.

The picture is typical of the types of desserts that Chef TJ used to provide. I wouldn't count on getting that any longer. I'm hoping for (but not counting on) something like that when we eat at 1900PF in February (that's where he's now working).

I think it's all about perspective. Outside of WDW, my kids NEVER get ANY kind of dessert (for that matter, it's hard just to eat an entree in a restaurant). They're very happy with ice cream. DD10 at most restaurants is offered cookies and brownies (the same ones at almost all restaurants) or fancy sundaes, but DD12 is generally offered the same choice of chocolate or vanilla scoops, maybe with syrup. Only a few places around WDW have anything more than that which she can actually eat for dessert due to her particular list of allergies. The fact that there is ANYTHING she can have I consider to be amazing and is part of the reason that we keep returning to WDW.

They'll likely be able to offer you one of the standard packaged allergy desserts like browies or cookies but I doubt they'll go next door to Kona to get one of their decadent desserts for you. Personally, I'd rather fruit and ice cream (the allergy desserts are good but they're the same ones offered at every single restaurant around WDW and they get tiring since there's such a limitted number of options; if you haven't had any of them elsewhere then you'll probably be happy with them).

We have cancelled ADRs at restaurants because their options were so much more limitted than other restaurants. We actually had one chef tell us that he feared for DD10's safety if we ate there (at least I know he understood allergies so I'm not complaining, just stating a fact). With a coconut allergy, I might consider a different restaurant. There are plenty of amazing places to eat at WDW. Kona is wonderful if you're wanting to eat at the Polynesian!

Oh believe me, this wasn't my choice. I wanted Italian, but got overruled by the rest of the family. I'm really not into the whole Polynesian or Hawaiian island thing. (Caribbean Beach is a totally different thing. I LOVE CBR.)

The thing is my parents don't have an account, so it's in my name. I guess I'll just go over with them, get them checked in, and then go somewhere else on my own. Make us all happier that way.

Seriously? They have coconut in the bread?? WHY??????

Is it in the bread pudding as well??

I am not going to be a happy camper I fear... Well, depending on what option I get after I call and notate on our reservation that I'm allergic to coconut.

Be very careful if you are eating at Sanaa. Almost everything on the menu is cooked in coconut oil. We discovered this after my husband took a bite of his food and then had to stab himself with an EpiPen.

Thanks!

I'll file it away for the future. No plans to eat there anytime soon. It's usually just the meat and sometimes milk that really bother me...but the oil does occasionally.

Sorry you and your husband found out the hard way!!

i can help with this one!!

i have a tree nut allergy that includes coconut and had it listed on my ohana ressie a few weeks ago.

the chef came over and said the only problems i would have would be the bread and the bread pudding.

so here's what was offered:

2 slices of white bread instead of the pineapple/coconut bread.... i declined.

they made me a brownie hot fudge sundae for dessert and it was AMAZING!!! it was really really really good! they were very accommodating so fear not!

trust me... i still left crazy stuffed!

just ate there Sunday night, I want to say the bread was pineapple coconut, but not sure. I actually hate coconut, but the bread is pretty good. I ate a couple small bites, but of course, I am not allergic.
did not notice the coconut in the dessert though. It's a fun place to eat.
enjoy

Just go get a loaf of Kings Hawaiian Bread at the grocery store, same ingredients.;)
