Oh No! Now MY work computer can't DIS!

I start teaching again in 2 weeks. I went in today while the kids were at VBS and moved some things around and picked up a couple of resources. I also hooked up my computer and went to the DIS--BLOCKED!!!
Now this happened a couple of years ago but I was able to send a note to the "blockers" because the blocked category was "unmoderated message boards". They opened it back up because it was moderated. Now the category is "message/bulletin boards", and if I want to complain I have to go to our own computer guy--the same one who won't let anyone have a screen saver. Since it IS a message board, I suppose I don't have a leg to stand on.
Amusingly enough, the passporter message boards are NOT blocked.
Oh well. Guess I won't be able to spend my lunch on the boards anymore! Hope I don't gain any weight!

I read and hear of more and more of this kind of thing happening. I guess too many people are abusing their time at work to post on BB's.

A lot of internet filters are pre-packaged and those settings come blocked by default. If there's no policy on accessing forums, the admin should be able to open it for you. As far as screen savers, from my own experience as a Network Admin, they cause nothing but havoc on our network and they aren't allowed here either.

Also, if there's no policy, you can always use a proxy server.

We can't have screesavers (won't even let us if we tried), but I was having fun adding wallpaper to all the computers at work. Soon after an e-mail was sent to everyone asking us to stop doing it because it was causing havoc. Now we have plain blue boring wallpaper/background/screens.

I used to have wallpaper of a picture of the Magic, but now our computers automatically log off after 10 minutes of nonactivity--meaning if you start typing a test you'd better save it if you have to stop and teach, or you'll lose it.
Although one way around that is to put a CD in the CD drive, hit play and repeat, and keep the volume all the way down...the computer won't log off that way.
They are afraid teachers will leave their computers and enterprising students will come in and change grades. I lock my door!

My work is pretty lenient, esp with my job since my job primarily involves being there IN CASE something comes up. So if I spend my day posting etc. as long as I'm not looking at any "adult" or offensive sites, they don't care...

I feel your pain. I, also, teach and I am blocked from pretty much everything at work.

If I couldn't get to the DIS at the schools where I sub (in the nurses' offices), I might just have to quit subbing . It can get hectic, but most days there's quite a bit of downtime.
