Oh no! Not the Selfie-Sticks...

I'm sure your tune will change when you get whacked with one.

The hate comes when the people who are using them interfere with people who are not using it. The first time someone blocks your view or smacks you with one you will understand.

I don't hate strollers or those pushing them and I've been run into countless times, same goes with ECV's. If it's an accident, why would I get all ticked off? Stuff happens. As far as my view being blocked, it's happened before and I usually just take step to the side or tilt my head. I'm just not someone who looks to get mad at stuff when I'm at the parks, I just wanna have fun!

You are incredibly gracious. I could learn some huge lessons from you. Wow.

I always thought that the 80s generation being talked about was those who were adults in the 80s. After all, it wasn't the preteens and teens doing all those naughty things. (I'm assuming we're about the same age...I graduated HS in '87) The adult actors in St Elmo's Fire, not the actual teens who were in Breakfast Club, LOL.

Aw, thanks! :flower3:

I think adults were doing most of that stuff, but as teens we were the ones who got to hear about it the most. Because of the fear we might go off the rails at any moment (and also because our local media would inevitably find 15 and 16 year old in the clubs and there'd be a panic).

The "Pet Rock" debuted in 1975 and was pretty much gone by 1976.

It had a weird resurgence in the mid-80's. I remember seeing them on store shelves, and I actually bought one. I think it's because there was a New York Times article about the "me generation"... probably the same article that got me all confused about which generation they were talking about. :lmao:

I don't plan on hitting anyone with my stick, or blocking people's views!

No one plans on it, but I promise you that if you put your SS in the air, it will be in the view of someone else. At some point when you're brandishing it around in a crowd, it will bump into someone else. You're smart enough to know that.

The better thing to say is that you don't care if those things happen, that these things are allowed and it's a part of the expensive vacation you've purchased you don't want to sacrifice, and at this point you're more concerned with you enjoying whatever moment than anyone else enjoying it -- that your fun and your memories are more important to you than anyone else's is to you.

A perfectly reasonable position to take. But be honest about it.

Actually I just got back from China where I purchased my beloved stick, and didn't manage to hit anyone or block views which when standing on the great Wall is quite an accomplishment.
So I'm in know doubt that I'll manage just fine whilst at the parks, I also had no plans to wavey stick in the air whilst the parade or fireworks are on, my husband is 6ft3 and perfectly capable of using a video camera for that.
My trip and memories are not of anymore Importance then anybody else's, I'm just careful and know that I Respect the people around me.

I'm just jealous I didn't think of it and get the patent. I am sure this will be a short-lived phenomena, though I am positive an iPad version will be here soon.

Just returned and can confirm that selfie-sticks have taken over. Most of the time they were benign, and used in places that you would expect. However, places they got annoying ...

1) Front row of Muppet-Vision 3-D during the entirety of the movie. (Who wants a blurry movie anyway?)
2) EVERYWHERE at Fantasmic! being held high up in the air so the bright LCD screens could be seen (and block the view of) everyone behind.

Normally stuff like that doesn't bother me, but in those two instances it was really irritating.

They drove me nuts on my last trip..People holding them over their head in shows and theaters, people walking with them sticking out and smacking into my back with them.I got hit with them more times last week..What happened to enjoying something and not living thru a camera lens a whole trip?

It's been some time since I concluded that it is pointless to watch parades or fireworks at WDW because some jerks are guaranteed to ruin things with their rudeness. Most threads on these boards hating on other people are threads about trying to watch parades and fireworks. Selfie sticks are just the latest tool for people to annoy others with. But using them on rides? Oh lordy.

Just wondering, does anyone say anything to the people hitting you and such with the stick?
Sometimes all it takes is to make a person aware.
My mil for example is constantly stopping in the way of others, most people make an annoying face and stand there till she moves or go around. I on the other hand tell her you realize that you stopped right in the walkway can you move to the side. (I'll tell strangers too)
She then realizes and tries to be more aware of it
Doesn't help that exact moment per say but others in the future.

So trust me that I'll mention it to rude or simply unaware people that they are in the way or hitting others with the stick, whatever

I think selfie sticks look completely ridiculous when used, so I'll never use one. I don't care if somebody else wants to look ridiculous, go for it. Just don't hit me with it or stick the thing up in the air ruining my view of something and I won't complain.

I couldn't believe how many we saw last week!! I wasn't prepared for it... had to work hard to get my go-go gadget arm up higher than the cell phones on them to get a decent picture here and there. lol
