Oh No! My dog has swine flu!!!

Nobody said they hated you.

I was sort of joking about that too.

If anyone that read this has a very sick child and was offended by my thread or thought I was making fun of their child by joking that my dog got it at the petting zoo, then I sincerely apologize. Really I was just trying to lighten the mood. I'm as concerned as any other parent about the whole flu thing.

I hope you are both feeling better.

Thanks! I really appreciate that.

We are - but I wouldn't recommend H1N1 to anybody - it is totally craptastic.

OP - I thought it was funny...:rolleyes1

I actually DID give my dog the swine flu...she guarded over me when I was sick, and then her cough came on...the vet said it was most likely H1N1, and it is entirely possible I gave it to her. She was fine in about a week.

That is what I get for having such a loyal dog....

(and no, I'm not joking!)

Oh no, poor puppy. I didn't know pets could get it. I'm glad you're both feeling better.
A classmate of my daughter had a terrible case. He was out of school for 8 days, but no one else in his family caught it. His mom is still shaking her head over it. She can't figure out how it missed them when he was so sick. None of his classmates caught it either, and they are packed into that classroom.

OP, your post brought tears to my eyes.

Only because I had a flashback to having to have that stupid nasal swab test done at the beginning of the month when I was sick as a dog for a week. I had tears POURING down my face and they kept telling me, "I'm sorry, but could you do it again?" Argh.

ACK! DD had to have the swab a few weeks ago, and she hated it. There is no way she would have let them do it twice in a row.

It was the worst. And I had to do it to myself (well, I could have had the nurse do it, but ...no.), so it was a really masochistic undertaking for me. Just thinking about it is making my nose itch and feel all gross. Blech.

No, I wouldn't take him to the vet.... but if his tail starts to curl up then yes.

That's crazy considering the big deal the press made about two pigs possibly having it.

yea...I don't think it was necessarily bad taste..but understand why this would upset people. It is scaring people. Kids are dying. I have two kids with asthma ...so the swine flu really makes me nervous..so yes i talk about it....My kid can go to the hospital with a cold due to it turning in pneumonia..I also understand that you were kind of trying to lighten the doomsday mood a little too.,.which I appreciate! I can't live in a bubble and many are telling me to postpone my trip..so a little ..it's not so bad humor goes a long way with me!!

As for the dogs..how can I tell if my dog has swine? He doesn't make the piggy sounds...he is a lab and I don't think he even tastes his food..it is inhaled...:lmao::lmao: I am avoiding petting zoos..though he is going to the kennel for our Disney trip....uh oh..should I vaccinate him? Naw he has a strong constitution..he never gets sick..But the gas!!!!! Please someone help me with the Lab gas!!!:lmao:

There have been no reports yet of any cases that have spread to humans to pets:confused3

Did your vet call the CDC? Do you think he was just joking?

No, they didn't call the cdc (that I am aware of,) and no, I don't think he was joking. I wasn't when I took my dog in...(actually, my husband did, because I was too sick to take her.)

Hmmm.... because I don't happen to find this thread funny I don't have a sense a humor? :confused3

OK!

no, but it does sound like your trying to start something over nothing.... that is what this dis board has turned a lot into.

Really bad taste. There are kids here in ICU and on ECMO and you are making jokes. Hope you get your laughs.

My DS got the flu, not the swine flu, but the kick butt, make you feel like death warmed over variety, and even at 8yr old was still able to have a sense of humor. He woke up the other morning, coughing and looked at me with his watery eyes and said, "You look like how I feel.":rotfl2::thumbsup2
I went through 6 months of Chemo for cancer, and joked the whole way through it. A good sense of humor is a very healthy way of dealing with a scary situation like the Swine Flu epidemic and is proven to raise your immune system. Relax, or you will end up lowering your immune system and catching something worse, like a sense of humor.

That was how they diagnosed my step mom. She gave it to her cat, and I guess that this is a trait of swine rather than the other flus.

And, I agree. You gotta laugh to get through life.

According to ASPCA there is no evidence that humans are transmitting this
H1N1 to pets, or vice versa. If you people have vets telling you this, they are misinformed.

Actually it was the public health doctor at my step-mom's hospital. She is a general practitioner. (stepmom!)

Whether its coming from a general practioner or a vet, there is still no evidence, or confirmation that H1N1 is being transmitted too/from dogs and cats. However there has been 1 confirmed H1N1 case in a ferret according to the AVMA.
I think that any doctor (MD or DVM) telling people this kind of stuff, without data and evidence backing it up, do absolutely nothing for controlling irrational public panic about this virus.
While it may be coincidental that her cat got sick, or it may be that the virus has in fact mutated and is now transmissable to felines, but how is it she can be 100% sure that she gave it to her cat, did she have it tested?

OP, didn't mean to go OT. I thought your joke was funny :)

http://www.catchannel.com/news/2009/10/06/can-cats-and-dogs-catch-h1n1-virus.aspx

Nope, no evidence of it spreading to cats and dogs.

I, too, thought the OP post was cute. Yes, people are sick, but she didn't talk about the sick children.

I saw a really cool article in the paper the other week about solders that are at Walter Reed Hospital, back from Iraq and they was that they joke about their injuries -- like guys with no legs wearing t-shirts saying, I did it was the handicapped sticker. They said that it was a way to "get" through it. There were lots of other t-shirts too. Apparently, they also do some very serious joking among themselves -- things that other people might think was offensive. Humor is what gets us through life.
