So, I turned on the soaker hose for one of the gardens today and completely forgot to turn it off...for more than ten hours. :scared1:

So, how bad is the water bill going to be for leaving a hose running for over ten hours today? :scared1: It's already way high because of the sprinklers running in the summer. How bad a screw up is this going to be? :confused3

Where I live not bad at all. Thats about the only thing I dont pay a lot for.

We accidentally left our's on one time, and ended up with water in our basement. Not the whole basement, just one end of it. We have well-water, but the pump would have been running the whole time.

We just had to call our water authority cause we were think about buying one of those pop up pools and wanted to know how much the water was in a suburb of philadelphia it's 8.19$ per 1000 gallons of water. We did get the pool and I think it took 2-3 hrs to fill and it was 2000 gallons.

Btw that's SUUUCKS

It won't be as bad as you think. I work in utility billing, and a rule of thumb is that a water hose running for a day uses about 7000 gallons. I don't know how much you pay per thousand, but at our highest summer rate of $4.50 that would be $31.50. Depending on your water pressure, it could vary from the 7000, of course. If your utility does automated reading of your water, you could call them next week and see if they can tell you how much you used on that one day. It might set your mind at ease.

We have an above ground pool...round...25ft diameter. Filled it last summer and our water bill was $75. Normally runs $25. However last September we decided to run our sprinkler system everyday for a week setting it for various times for each zine, and then every few days thereafter ( our grass was brown) and the bill was over $100.

Year before last we had a corn patch that was seperate from our garden so I had to water it with a different hose. I would turn on the hoses when I got home from work to let them run while I did all my evening chores and then turn them off after supper.

Welll, twice I woke up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, and remembered the corn patch!! Both times I just knew that I was going to find my corn floating down the hill! :lmao: But the corn was fine and so was the water bill. It doesn't seem to run it up as much as you would think it might.

I still forget sometimes when getting fresh water for the horses. They have an old bathtub for a trough. I run water in it twice a day so that they will have clean fresh water all day, but I keep forgetting to turn it off. There is one patch all around that tub that has the best looking grass!

Our water bill is rarely much above the minimum amount.

Is your outside water on a separate meter? It's going to be the sewage charge that's going to kill the bill if it's not separate. That usually runs 2-3 times as much as using the actual water.

Although it's a soaker hose, in theory it should not be spewing out hundreds of gallons an hour. Your best bet is too google information on how many gallons it uses per minute or hour and go from there with your bill.

And take a look into how much it'll cost you to get a separate outside meter, where the water would not be returning to the sewer lines.

Don't worry about it -it won't be that much. In my normal water bill is 40.00every 3 months and in the summer it jumps to about 150.00 for the three months on July, August and Sept---but I run my sprinklers for at least 3 hours EVERY DAY of the week and fill the dogs pool almost every day and top off my own pool when needed---it won't be as bad as you think.

WOW! Some of you have really low water rates! I just got my normal water bill. We used 3700 gallons last month and the charge for water and sewer was $109 and some change. If a PP is right, leaving the garden hose on for that long would cost me over $200!

We live out of city limits, so our rate is higher than those in city limits.

You do realize this is REALLY bad for your grass right? By keeping the water close to the surface by watering frequently, the roots don't establish and go deep to whether dry spells. It is MUCH better to water less frequently but putting more water on at a time. You should water once/week (twice if it is really hot) and soak each area.

If I watered once a week my grass would be dead! If you don't water your lawn around here at least every 3 days you are dealing with a brown lawn! I don't know anyone that doesn't water every day and we all have thick green plush lawns. We have REALLY sandy soil here doesn't take much to dry it out.

Your sewer bill is included in your water bill?? We get a seperate sewer bill but its only 32.00 every 3 months-doesn't have anything to do with water usage though, everyone gets the same bill.

That is the point, because you water so frequently the roots don't go deep enough, it's a cycle. Set your mower to the highest setting and soak your lawn to soggy once/ week or twice a week depending on the temperature. Your lawn will LOOK better in the long run. It's best to start this in the spring before it gets too hot so it might be too late to try this now. By watering more you are creating a situation where you HAVE to water more, if that makes sense.

Every place we have lived has included the sewer bill with the water bill. It is based on your water usage what you pay.

With it being a soaker hose it does not use a tremendous amount of water so you should be good on the bill.

Wow glad ours is not or we would be in trouble LOL- its two totally seperate things here. One is the Water Authority and the other is the county sewer district.

same here.. we average $200 every 3 months.. and no pool or sprinkler. I dont water my lawn.

I know my town has some type of adapter you can get to put on your outside house so it will keep track. Good for those with pools. Than you bring it back in and they adjust your sewege part of the bill.

Almost all "grasses" are weeds. Weeds don't need anything to grow. St Augustine grass is a weed from Africa, if it can grow there and exceptionally well in Florida without regular lawn watering. And almost every area I've lived in, has strict watering rules, especially Florida.

I went to Scotts testing grounds outside of Orlando, beautifully manicured lawns there, and they don't have to water the lawn at all. They've seen St Augustine grass grow nearly 5 ft tall with roots 6 ft deep in the ground. It was in the backyard of an abandoned house. Guess what, it didn't get anything more than seasonal rain. That would be one perfect lawn once it's mowed.

Always mow your grass on the highest setting in the summer, the longer the grass the more water the grass can hold. In the spring and fall you can cut it to 2-3" short.
When you soak your lawn the water is allowed to go deep into the soil (more so than you think), and the roots will follow suit. The deeper the roots, the more water it finds and the less you need to put on top. You also run into a number of other problems with short roots, causing it to die even faster.

HOA's are the biggest to blame in people thinking they need a perfectly manicured, watered every day lawn. Lawns are the biggest water wasters in this country. And almost all types of grasses can be grown without anything more than seasonal rains.

man I'd kill for some of your water/sewer bills!!! Our water in the winter run at least 75$ a month. In the summer its as high as 250$ once we had a 300$ bill from the kids playing with the hose daily! This year we got a small easy-set pool this year to try and keep costs down! Our sewer is another bill at 33$ a month but we get it every 3 months at 99$...
