Oh no! 9 Days to Go and DS has MONO!

I found out this afternoon my 14 month old son has mono. UGH. We leave 2/6 for 12 days at BWV. The doctor says he can still go, but we'll have to take it easy (and hope that no one else comes down with it while we're there).

The other problem--we're bringing my in laws and my SIL's family with us. And they were not thrilled to find out that they were sharing a room with someone with mono. I guess I'll call member services tomorrow and see if there's a 1 bd and 2 studios available. We'd still all share a kitchen though.

I have planned this family reunion for months, down to the last PS. And now no one wants to go.

Just had to vent to people who would understand. Thanks.

So very sorry Jennypenny. I hope this works out. I had mono - of course, it's different with an 18 year old college student and a toddler - and I was terribly sick for a week and a half and then weak for another week after that.

I hope the little one is feeling better.

Many kids with mono bounce back very quickly. A week and done is not at all uncommon at that age. Besides if he isn't febrile, he should be hardly contagious by that point. Good luck.

I hope your son is feeling well soon. My BIl just had mono and I know he was contagious for a while, but I think that you had to exchange saliva. 9 days is a long time. What does your dr say about how it is transmitted and for how long is he contagious? I Mabe your ils could speak to th dr. I hope that your vacation goes on as planned.

Just to make you feel a little better....I had mono when I was 8 - and I was back to normal in about a week. It is a lot easier for a child to bounce back from mono than it is for an adolescent or adult. Just make sure he gets lots of rest now for the next couple of days. I have a feeling that he will be good to go in 9 days. Also, your family members should know that mono can only be passed through saliva - i.e. no sharing straws, silverware, etc. It is not an airborne virus and therefore they should not be worried about sharing a villa with you. I found out my ds (then 3 yrs old) had mono when he came down with a gastrointestinal bug. Imagine my shock when they informed me he had not only the gastrointestinal bug, but ALSO pneumonia, 2 infected ears, and mono! He had gotten so dehydrated, he never showed a runny nose or even a cough -- it just hid on him. He got a 3-for-one special, poor little guy. I felt like utter POOP for not knowing my kid was so ill! He is a child who hides illness very well, though -- he has a very high pain tolerance, like me (and VERRRRY unlike his dad, but THAT"s another thread all together!!)

ANYHOOOO... so I asked the pediatrician did I need to have the rest of my 3 kids tested, what if my youngest (then only 9 mos) got it, how long did my son have to stay out of school, etc. His response to me was: no sense testing the other kids, what would you do if they DID have it, you would only treat it symptomatically anyway. Most likely if they were around him BEFORE you knew, any exposure has already been done! To my knowledge, none of us contracted it! (ANd we were certainly with him, 24/7!) The Dr. kept my son out of preschool for a week but that was because he was so drained from the pneumonia and flu bug, not because he thought there would be a mono epidemic. They called mono the "kissing disease" when I was a kid -- not the "played with your toy" disease, or "passed within 10 feet and now I'm infected" disease, or even "shared a DVC villa" disease! I'd say there's a reason! So kiss that ds of yours (on the cheek, that is, haha!) and pack your bags and have a great trip! So long as no one tries to use his toothbrush or steal a swig from his sippee, I'd say they are as safe as anyone can be in this great big world o' germs! After all, if folks want to freak out over a 14 mos old with mono, they have NO business going to malls or airports or CERTAINLY Disney World!

If he tuckers out easily, rent him a wheelchair. We nag my Mom to let us "push her" and she always lasts a lot longer when she doesn't walk so much. Pushing an adult is manageable for me and I am certainly out-of-shape, so pushing a 14-year old will be easy IF he'll go for it.

This may teach you the joys of relaxed vacationing: late mornings and early nights. With enough sleep, a Florida vacation may be just what your son needs. I hope it all works out.

OK. How dumb am I? I thought your son was 14 YEARS old... I guess a stroller might work better than the wheelchair?

I am sure you and urs will have a great time. Baby's can have there moments on vacations anyway, there just a little easire to take when you are imersed in the magic of DW

We'll be at BWV from 2/4 to 2/9 (then on to VB for us) (with our DSs 5 and 2). I will look for a big family with a 14 month old aroung the pool

Have a magical vacation and don't let it drag you down (too much).

my DD 18 got mono just a couple days before our xmas trip last year , doctor said no need to test anyone, just rest if she gets tired, which she never did , just swollen glands, also said most older aduls my age {45} don't really get it my son 17 didn't and neither did my Dh or any of her friends that were around her before we left. so let him rest when he's tired and take some tylenol with you in case of a sore throat, have fun

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I feel a little better about things now that I've slept a little. I think I was taken back because I never expected a toddler to get mono. We told my DH's family that if they had concerns they should call their own doctors--we're not handing out medical advice. Our pediatrician said we could go and that's what we're doing.

The two families with kids were supposed to stay in the 2BD and his parents were going to stay in the studio. It was suggested that we take the studio and the rest of his family would stay in the 2bd. My DH told me he loves them, but he's paying for the trip, so he's staying in the two bedroom. I just explained that member services doesn't allow 5 people in a room !

Louis, we'll definitely see you at the pool! We arrive the morning of the 7th (we're driving from Bucks County, PA). I'll be the mom who always manages to go a$$ over tea kettle coming out of the keister coaster!
