Why is Katie So Sad?
TomKat insist Suri is "doing great", but Katie seems worse than ever.
Being a new mom has its ups and downs, especially for a celebrity. But for Katie Holmes, the downs seem to be far outweighing the ups. Ever since she and fiance Tom Cruise had Suri in April, Katie, 27, has rarely been seen with a genuine smile on her face. Even when she appears with her inner circle, she appears withdrawn, says insiders. What happened to the charming fresh faced young actress we used to know and love? OK! investigates.
From Movie Star To Mommy
"For a celebrity, becoming a mother can mean swinging from one extreme to the other," says Dr. Diana Kirschner, a psychologist and author of Opening Love's Door. "You go from being around highly creative people and collaborating on projects to being home along wiht the baby." In Katie's case, she went from being at the top of her acting game to being a housewife and the transition could be weighing heavily on her. "Celebrity status is one of the most valued roles in our culture now, while being a mother is one of the least valued. A new celebrity mom could feel like she's been completely demoted", says Dr. Kirschner.
In Tom's Shadow
Making matters worse, Tom's career has not slowed down one bit. Days after Suri's birth, Tom, 44, went overseas to promote Mission: Impossible 3, leaving Katie and Suri home. "It's so important to get support from your husband after you have a baby", says Dr. Kirschner. "If he has been away, it can make you feel insecure and abandoned. If you are already feeling demoted already and your husband is a big power player out in the world, that juxtaposition can really lower you self-esteem." On top of that, Katie may be feeling uncomfortable in her skin due to added pregnancy weight. "It's hard on women who don't lose the baby weight to feel good about themselves," says Jackie Keller, author of Body after Baby. As a result, Katie's confidence may be at an all time low.
Post Baby Blues?
Katie could even be showing signs of postpartum depression. "We don't know if that is what's going on," Says Dr. Kirschner. "But we do know that symptoms of postpartum depression. They include sadness, hoplessness, unexplained crying, exhaustion, and a loss of interest in the baby." Sadly, Katie wouldn't be able to get medical help for depressopm because Tom has made it clea he thinks psychiatry is a pseudoscience, and that depression should be treated through scientology'steachings. (Who can forget his famous feud with Brooke Shields on the topic of post partum depression?) If Katie is suffering, she may feel she has nowhere to turn.
Living in Isolation
Katie may also be mission crucial support from her family. She has yet to take Suri to her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, to see her parents. Instead Katie, Tom, and Suri have been in virtual hiding either at the Beverly Hills house or Telluride, Color., home. "Having a new baby drains on you emotionally and physically, but it helps to have your family there to nurture you," says Dr. Kirschner. yet the only family Katie sees are Tom's. Even on the rare occasions when Tom and Katie go out, Katie remains closed off. At a recent barbecue in California, Katie didn't talk with anyone except for Tom and his Scientology entourage, a source tells OK!. "It was bizarre," says the source. "Here she was in a very safe environment with people all in the same uppoer echelons of the entertainment industry and she did not mix with anyone. You'd expect a new mother to be glowing about her baby and showing off pictures. But she never strayed from Tom's mom and the Scientology minders. Even when she went to use the powder room, she was escorted by one of the Scientologists who stood outside the door!" says the source. "Katie seemed to be in a fog and looked almost glassy eyed." The source adds, "I'd met her a few times when she was dating Chris Klein, and she was so friendly and outgoing. This was a totally different person."
Waiting to Wed
Perhaps at the heart of Katie's transformation is her uncertain future with Tom. The pair have yet to set a wedding date despite the fact that they got engage and got pregnant in record time. Now that Katie, who was raised a catholic, has a child out of wedlock, she could be anxious about how her relationship with Tom is progressing. "She may have had a crush on him when she was a young girl," says psychologist Dr. Lillian Glass, "but now that the reality has set in, the fantasy is gone."
Suri has been spotted!
Another point of TomKat speculation has been the where abouts of Suri. Unlike most celbrity parents, who show off their new additions early on - often with an arranged photo shoot - nobody, not even close friends had gotten a glimpse of Suri until recently. Tom's friend Leah Remini finally revealed she saw Suri in early July. "She's a beaming baby," said the actress and scientologis. Now, Jada Pinkett Smith has just announced that she and her husband Will Smith have seen the elusive Suri too. "She's one of the sweetest babies I've ever met," says Jada. She and Will have reportedly visited twice with the family at the Beverly Hills home. So, what does Suri look like? "She's the cutest little baby," gushes Jada/ "She's got a head full of black, beautiful, hair. She's an absolute beauty and she's Daddy's Little Girl."

Katie Trapped In Tom's Prison!
When Katie Holmes met with her agents and Hollywood's powerful CAA agency on July 19, she was supposedly at their office to talk about work. But according to one source, Katie seemed "dazed and confused" and in no shape to do business! "My contacts at the agency told me that Katie couldn't seem to make a decision," the insider says. "She seems to be confused - about her relationship, career, the baby, everything! She's very sweet, but very lost."
Confirms a source close to Katie, "It's like she can't figure out what she wants anymore. She loves Tom (Cruise) , but he's smothering her." In fact, she's carely been outside of Cruise's compounds in Beverly Hills and Telluride Colo., since giving birth to their daughter Suri on April 18. "The truth," says the source," is that she feels trapped. Tom keeps her at home as if she's a doll he can take off the shelf and parade around like a prized posession."
Her Career's Collapsed!
One reason that Katie, 27, feels lost, friends say, is that with no new movies in the pipeline the formerly hardworking actress (before meeting Cruise she starred in Dawson's Creek and filmed 13 movie roles int he space of 9 years!) suddenly has no world to speak of! That's in marked contrast to the effect Cruise had on his exes. "Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruise both got career boosts out of being with Tom, but Katie has become the laughing stock," the source says. "Many perceive her as a puppet of Tom's."
Friends say that Katie must be freaked out about the possibility that "her relationship with Tom is doing irreperable harm to her career" - which may be why she visited CAA (which reps both actors). "She used to live for her work, and now that's been taken away from her," one of Holmes' friends tells Star. She may be right to worry. She finished her last two films - including 2005's Batman Begins - before she met Cruise, 44, 16 months ago.
What happened? Nicole and Penelope came into fame when they hooked up with Cruise, but Katie, instead came into motherhood. And, says a source close to the couple, for Tom, motherhood and moviemaking just don't mix. "Tom says that the first year of a baby's life is the most important and that Katie needs to be home with Suri." the source explains.
Already, "Katie is crawling up the walls," her friend says. And she has few outlets for her energy! Katie's lost touch with mose of her pre-Tom friends since, says a source, "I heard that Tom told her she's a mature woman now and has to let go of what he calls her 'immature friends.'" Her only confidantes these days are Tom and his pre-approved companions, like Katie's Scientology minder Jessica Rodriguez, 30,. It's a mostly solitary existence for Katie and Suri: Other than a few of Tom's friends like Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leah Remini, a fellow scientologist, almost no one has been allowed to visit the baby since her birth!
Wedding Postponed
Her career's not the only thing that's stalled! According to Tom's rep, the couple's wedding has been pushed back to "late summer or early fall" - and will take place at one of Tom's homes, reportedly to give Katie more tome to get over any post baby blues. A source close to the Holmes family reports hearing "that Katie has been bloated, cranky, and indecisive," and a friend tells Star that before tying the knot, "she needs more time to snap out of it."
If any baby blues were to turn into depression, snapping out of it would be tough, given Tom's strict adherence to Scientology. The religion discourages anti-depressants and other medecines which are often used to help post-partum moms. "Instead, Tom is urging her to excersize and shop till she drops," the friend tells Star, "So far, those things don't seem to be working." As a result, "Katie's in a bad spot," says a source, citing Holmes' down moods and seclusion.
Family freaked out
A source says that Katie's also stressed about the growing rift between Cruise and her parents, Martin and Kathy, back in Toledo, Ohio, who don't support Scientology and have been largely left out of the new couple's life. In fact, in the months since Suri's birth, the Holmeses had just one visit with their grandchild in L.A. "there was talk of Katie and Suri coming to Ohio in July, around Tom's birthday (on July3rd)," says a source close to the family. "But instead, Tom took Katie to Las Vegas and Telluride. He was hooping the mountain air would do her some good."
The source tells Star that "Kathy's kitchen pantry is stocked with baby formula" and she was deeply hurt that the couple "could fly to Colorodo with Suri" when they haven't managed to bring the baby home to Toledo. "Katie's parents are probably worried that they've lost their daughter," another source says. "But what can they do?"
Tom Vs. Her Parents
A source tells Star that Katie had hoped her parents, Martin and Kathy, and Tom would get along after Suri's birth, but, "Tom has gotten more stubborn about not bending to their will, and they are more convinced than ever that she should leave him. It wears on Katie, no doubt."
Katie's Take
Even Katie may be beginning to see the cracks in their relationship. "She is starting to wonder, 'what about me, what about my needs?'" says a source. "She'd always fantasized about marrying Tom Cruise, but now, is she starting to wonder if maybe some fantasies are better left unfulfilled?" Still, the source says, she's planning to stay with Tom. "Katie probably worries that if she and Tom were to call it quites, she's most likely lose Suri. There isn't a chance in hell that Tom would let anyone else, not even Katie, raise his first born biological child. I think he's way too controlling."
Her fear may be based on Tom's arrangement with Kidman - though they officially split custody of Isabellam, 13, and Connor, 11. The kids lice almost exclusively with him. But Katie could have a good legal case for keeping Suri, if she and Cruise go their seperate ways. "More than likely because Suri is an infant, the mother would be named primary custodial parent," Beverly Hills divorce lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan tells Star. "At 3 months, an infant is more bonded with her mother."
And Katie wouldn't dream of leaving her daughter behind. "Suri is one of the few bright spots in her life," the source says. Plus, for all her troubles, "Katie loves Tom and wants to solve this dilemma," saus the source. "I think Katie just wants her life back".
See Tommy .... you DON'T know everything about psychiatry!!!!!! I am sorry that Katie has PPD ... but she knew perfectly well what she was getting into when she hooked up w/him! Poor Katie -- I guess Brooke Shields did know best! The religion discourages anti-depressants and other medecines which are often used to help post-partum moms. "Instead, Tom is urging her to excersize and shop till she drops," the friend tells Star, "So far, those things don't seem to be working."
How much do you want to bet that the Scientologist handler scoped out the bathroom to make sure that nobody was in there to try to talk some sense into Katie!?!? That is v. disturbing, if you ask me. Something dreadfully wrong w/the whole thing. Cruise is only painting himself to be a freak w/all of this nonsense! The whole couch jumping thing was the start ... I am sure his fan base plummets with every freaky article and statement!"But she never strayed from Tom's mom and the Scientology minders. Even when she went to use the powder room, she was escorted by one of the Scientologists who stood outside the door!"
