Love the US cover!

As someone who was a 30 something until two days ago, I've never understood the Oprah allure. But I have to agree with you that there are way too many people who are so taken with what she has to say that they'd drink the kool aid if she said to do it.

Suzanne

ITA! I used to watch her show, but then she got so over the top that when I did watch, I would laugh at the way she and her audience would act. Forget about when she gave stuff away! :rotfl: :happytv:

Maybe I am the only one, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she becomes a scientology follower.

Interesting article on "recruiting" celebrities.

Oprah??? Be carfeful, girl!

What's expected from celebrities in Scientology

source : http://atheism.about.com/

Every possible effort, pressure, and sales tactic is brought to bear on existing celebrity membership to recruit other new celebrities into Scientology. Celebrities are heavily indoctrinated to their duty and responsibility of recruiting new celebrities.

They also are expected to constantly promote and talk about Scientology. Recruiting and other Scientology promoting activities proves their loyalty to the organization and approves their security clearance to go to the next secret level.

Celebrity activity is closely monitored. If they don't promote Scientology in their media coverage or if they don't promote it at their events or do special events for Scientology their loyalty is questioned. The following are three examples of Scientology celebrity endorsements and promotions :

"lt's nice to know you can be a cause of your life as well as an effect," convert John Travolta, 23, says of his Scientology training. "lt's a logical and very sane way of living. I don't get upset as easily as I used to. I don't think I could have handled my success as well without it."

From 'The Auditor": The Monthly Journal of Scientology -AOSH ANZO 136. "The Road To Freedom" album of LRH songs released on CD! Attendees of the 23rd of June event were able to snap up the brand new edition of "The Road To Freedom" album now available on CD and cassette. This album features such leading artists as John Travolta, Chick Corea, Julia Migenes, Karen Black, Nicky Hopkins, Amanda Ambrose, Gayle Moran and Leif Garrett. This album is a unique and highly enjoyable collection of songs composed by L. Ron Hubbard to impart to the listener some of the basic knowledge that Scientology offers. Whilst viewed as controversial by those who seek to oppose man's spiritual freedom, the lyrics on this album offer answers to questions man has asked for eons."

Kirstie Alley is active in disseminating a new 47 page booklet on ways to preserve the environment. The booklet, entitled "Cry Out," was named after a Hubbard song and was produced by Author Services Inc., his literary agency. Author Services is controlled by influential Scientologists. In April, Alley provided nationwide exposure for the illustrated booklet (which mentions Hubbard but not Scientology) when she unveiled it on the popular Arsenio Hall Show. Since then, it has been distributed to prominent environmental groups throughout the U.S.

Although the advertising isn't finished yet, the new campaign includes a half-hour "documercial" entitled "The Problem of Life." It dramatizes a couple who are looking for answers to the questions of life," a spokesman said, such as: What's it all about? Where are we going? Wouldn't it be good to have a job that is fulfilling? The couple unsuccessfully visits a doctor, a psychotherapist and a marriage counselor. "At the end, they find out Scientology could provide the answers," the spokeswoman said. The documercial ends with a 10-minute direct-sales pitch from Jeff Pomerantz, the soap-opera star (best known for his role in the "Dynasty" series) who is one of the church's several celebrity members.

Celebrities are not only pushing Scientology and Scientology's non religious alter ego Dianetics for multilevel marketing like commissions; they are also heavily pushing the Scientology front groups, like Narconon, the Way to Happiness, Applied Scholastics, and others.

A partial list of front groups set up and directly or indirectly controlled by Scientology, and which are involved in recruiting for Scientology or covertly or overtly attacking adversaries or defending Scientology, includes :

the Committee To Defend The First Amendment
the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation
the Citizens Commission On Human Rights
Narconon
the Committee On Public Health And Safety
the Task Force On Mental Retardation
the Gerus Society
the Dianetic Information Group
the Committee To Re-involve Ex-offenders
the National Commission for Law Enforcement And Social Justice
the Foundation For The Communication of Culture International
Doctors For Religious Liberty
Vanguard, April, (a pseudo anti cult organization)
Alliance To Protect Religious Liberty
Committee For A Safe Environment
American Citizens For Honesty in Government
the Way to Happiness Foundation
the Whistle Blowers
Health Med
Criminon
Applied Scholastics
Concerned Businessman's Association of America
Sterling Management

Scientology's Front Groups play an important role. Scientology set up reform groups shortly after Hubbard, in 1966, wrote :

"Churches are looked upon as reform groups. Therefore we must act like a reform group."

Scientology and Dianetics are held in such disrepute that in public Scientology must use front groups to defend it, speak for it, and attack its enemies. Internal confidential documents seized by the F.B.I. show that social reform activities were designed primarily to attack critics publicly from the safe and respectable position of a humane social reform group.

An example of Hubbard's thinking on this matter is policy directive HCO PL 12 January 1973 "The Safe Point":

"...Rule l...Get in a safe place and speak up. It is necessary of course to have a safe place to get into, from which one can in safely speak up. One cannot defend himself in a point that has no defenses...Thus the Safe Point takes consideration over Active Defense...a special unit must be set up and run at full steam to make a safe point and gain viable PR Area Control over all publics in the area...The PR Area Control action in a new area can go so far as to create in the area of whole past and future track for the activity being established. It can make it sound old-fashioned, stable, reliable, expert, productive..."

The Scientology social reform front groups fulfill Hubbard's directives to a "T." Very few people will attack a social reform group, so Scientology now has its "Safe Point" from which these groups can get its own propaganda messages across.

And I distinctly remember, at one point Oprah WAS a little more Jesus / The Lord oriented - wasnt she? She isnt anymore, though.
You know, when she was talking more about religion, everyone complained that she was so "Jesus" and now they're complaining that she doesn't talk about Jesus anymore. I'm not saying you in particular, CathrynRose ... just people in general! Maybe the network told her to knock off the Jesus stuff?

I've never heard/read of her actually hanging out w/Travolta and Cruise. I've heard she's invited them to parties, and they've invited her to theirs ... but that's a whole different ballgame than hanging out w/them constantly. Sure, they're on her show... and prob. for the reason that they attract a lot of viewers! Think about it -- are people going to be more interested in watching Joe from Podunk or in Cruise (esp. after his latest antics)? I think she keeps these people "close" b/c she knows they will draw an audience and she can always ask them to come in and talk. I know that she adores Will Smith and Jada, too.

Now, note that not one of the celebs on Oprah has been talking religion -- they are promoting movies, diets, etc. Kirstie Ally spent her whole time talking about losing weight, etc. Tom just blahed on about Katie. And, Travolta just talks. For people who are supposed to use the limelight to promote Scientology, Oprah's not letting it happen on her show!

And, although I love Oprah, I promise not to drink her Kool-Aid! Nothing will sway me to Scientology!!!! Well ... maaaaybe if I got to have Johnny Depp all to myself til the end of time, there are things I might be swayed to do .... but I doubt that's happening anytime soon!!!!!!

Now, let's talk about Rosie who was constantly Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. She would never shut up about him. Why, all of a sudden, has she dropped her Tommy fascination!?!?

Anyway ... as for Suri ... I think I saw a whole bunch of Suri's at the beach on Tuesday!!!! There were some w/multi-colors, some that were see-through, some that were floral printed. Lovely beach balls ... ooops, I mean Suri's.

It will be interesting to see if the topic comes up often on "The View" in the new season. Rosie's never been one to keep her opinions to herself. It's no wonder they didn't want Star and Rosie on the show together.

I wonder if Oprah specifically tells the scientology celebs that they aren't allowed to mention it on her show. If she allowed that the tabloids would be all over her and start assuming she was a member.

Why is Tom Cruise the biggest wacko  when it comes to talking about scientology? Is it because he's so high up in the organization like I've read?

Not True! - I specifically remember a John Travolta show the season that they always ended the show with "remembering you spirit" where joy of joys, Kelly Preston did the piece on how she remembers her spirit, and she went on and on about how Scientology helps her to do this, and their are so many tools in their religion that keep their marriage so perfectly happy. Definate recruitment piece.

Has anyone who is NOT a Scientologist seen this "baby"?

Why does it have to be "When Tom and Katie are ready to introduce their baby to the world they will" instead of them just taking her for a walk or going for a cup at Starbucks like the rest of the babies in the world get introduced? Oh wait...maybe she is premiering on Toms's other plant first! :rotfl:

They are drawing this "unwanted" attention to themselves. If we had seen the little "cutie" we would have all moved on by now. If you notice there are hardly any mentions of Shiloh any more. (OT but was anyone else who has a little girl of their own bothered by the less than cute clothes they dressed that baby in for the pictures?)

I missed that one. HMMM...maybe there is something to the "Oprah's a closet scientologist" thing. And they've got themselves all in a tizzy over the Oprah-Gayle lesbian contraversy. Quick!Somebody tell them they're looking in the wrong closet!!! :rotfl2:

Seriously though. I don't think he pays these people off to say things, I bet with all the resources Scientology has, he has blackmail dirt on these people. "Oh Jada, remember that night after your concert when you got a little too friendly with the drummer? How about you say how beautiful InvisaSuri is to the press?"
Someone posted an article from Penthouse with L Ron Hubbard's DS (I think the article was from the 1980s). One of the things he said was that in the 'auditing' process, people tell their deepest secrets to the 'auditor'. He mentioned that they assume anything they tell the 'auditor' is confidential, the way it would be with a priest, minister or counselor. But, it's not. He said it's all written down and kept in that person's record, where it can be used later on if they need some 'convincing'.

Check out this article: http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,160192,00.html (copied below) with talk of the Pre TOMKAT days...

Frightning!!!

The newly engaged Katie Holmes still has some explaining to do to her friends and family.

There were 16 days in April during which no one seems to know where she was.

Holmes made a public appearance on April 4 at the premiere of "Steel Magnolias" on Broadway.

She came with her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, and a couple of other friends. They were there to support Rebecca Gayheart, who was making her Broadway debut.

I know this because I spoke to Holmes at length during the play's intermission. She said she had just moved into her New York apartment and was looking forward to seeing the city.

I also know that on April 4, she had not yet made the acquaintance of Tom Cruise. She briefly dated Josh Hartnett after breaking up with actor Chris Klein.

Hartnett, Klein, Cruise: Which of these three is not like the others?

Klein and Hartnett are young and tall. Cruise is middle-aged and height-challenged.

On the other hand, he's the biggest movie star in the world. They are not.

Holmes was busy during that first week in April. On April 7, she was photographed at the Fragrance Foundation's FiFi event.

Four days later, Holmes was still in New York and was photographed at VH1's "Save the Music" concert. She still had not met Cruise.

Sometime that week, her friends say, she flew to Los Angeles for a meeting with Cruise about a role in "Mission: Impossible 3." The meeting took place after April 11.

The next time anyone heard from Holmes was on April 27, when she appeared in public as Cruise's girlfriend and love of his life.

Where was she during those 16 days?

Somewhere during that time, she decided to fire both her manager and agent, each of whom she had been with for years and who were devoted to her.

The manager, John Carrabino, also handles Renée Zellweger and is beloved by his clients.

Holmes also acquired a new best friend, Jessica Feshbach, the daughter of Joe Feshbach, a controversial Palo Alto, Calif., bond trader.

The Feshbach family, according to published documents, has donated millions to the Church of Scientology. Jessica's aunt even runs a Scientology center in Florida.

According to Richard Behar's now famous 1991 story in Time magazine about Scientology, the Feshbachs were the subject of congressional hearings in 1989.

Behar wrote: "The heads of several companies claimed that Feshbach operatives have spread false information to government agencies and posed in various guises — such as a Securities and Exchange Commission official — in an effort to discredit the companies and drive the stocks down.

"Michael Russell, who ran a chain of business journals, testified that a Feshbach employee called his bankers and interfered with his loans. Sometimes the Feshbachs send private detectives to dig up dirt on firms, which is then shared with business reporters, brokers and fund managers."

The risk-taking Feshbachs, known the world over for making their fortune "shorting" stocks, and the level-headed, conservative Holmeses would be a difficult mix at a dinner table.

Katie's father, Martin Holmes, is the senior partner in a large and respected Toledo, Ohio, law firm. His son, Martin Jr., has recently joined the firm. He's a Harvard graduate. Katie's mom, Kathy, is frequently cited in Toledo for her charity work.

There is some fear among Holmes' close circle that her instant romance with Cruise is not as organic as portrayed.

For one thing, Holmes was raised a strict Catholic. Also, gone from the picture are two close Holmes friends who used to be with her when she did publicity for a film.

One of these is Meghann Birie, a childhood friend who has suddenly disappeared from Holmes' world. Another, a local TV producer here in New York, was too afraid to discuss the situation with me.

We know that Cruise auditioned several actresses for this role before settling on Holmes. This column reported a story about Jennifer Garner. There have been published stories about Kate Bosworth, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Alba being approached.

A newer one involves Scarlett Johansson, who ran for her life when presented with a fait accompli dinner at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood.

And history has been rewritten since the April 27 unveiling.

Curiously, since the Cruise-Holmes situation popped up, we have heard over and over again that Cruise was the young actress' idol when she was growing up.

That's certainly interesting because all of the publicity that used to run on Holmes — still found all over the Internet — lists another Tom as her favorite actor.

That would be Tom Hanks.

I've actually heard this theory years ago in relation to Tom. If he told them when he first joined that he's gay, then they'd have a written affidavit of this in his handwriting.

Seeing how Lance Bass felt he had to make a proclamation of this the other day, (instead of being able to casually & quietly live his life,) & it was on the cover of People magazine & covered on Entertainment Tonight, it's clear we still live in a time & society where people make a big deal when it is found out someone is gay. :sad2:

Tommy Boy probably watched with avid interest at all the coverage. Even Lance Bass said he couldn't come forward earlier, because he thought, "It would hurt the group - N'Sync."

Tom probably still thinks if Scientology came forward with the affidavits, it would crucify his career. :scared:

I have a new theory about Suri now. :teeth: Notice when Tommy Boy was not so much into Scientology when he was first with Mimi Rogers or Nicole? And Nicole was definitely not into Scientology. :p I think Tom knew he had to hand over his first born child over to Scientology. He pretended to be sterile, instead of doing invitro. They openly adopted 2 kids to get past this clause.

With Suri, as they are really blackmailing him now, she's either been handed over, and if the papparazzi want to catch pics of her, they should be hanging out at Celebrity Centre instead, :magnify: or Tom & Katie did indeed try to adopt another child hoping to palm that one off to Scientology, rather than give up his first real born child. Only the adoption fell through & they have no child at all to hand over! :rotfl:

Probably, Tom's couch jumping on Ohrah was a silent cry for help from her. She's usually very good at stepping in & doing interventions. He probably thought she's the only one who has enough power to go against the Scientology church, herself - save Tom & come out with even more power after it's all over! :lmao:
