I wanted to go into the health occupations program my school offers thru the county vo-tech. I went to meet with the counselors today and to discuss the curriculum.

They basically told me, in nice words, that I'm not fit to be a nurse. That my bad knee will hold me back, and that I'll pick up sicknesses from the patients cause my immune system is not the best right now.
They tried to steer me into physical/occupational therapy or psychology and away from nursing.

What they failed to realize is that I may be more active next school year. That I will be able to be there all day every day. So, now I'm determined to prove them wrong and become a nurse.

It just made me so pissed off.

Good for you!!
Who is this guy to tell you you can't be a nurse.
You're still in recovery mode! By the time you're ready to start nursing school I'm sure you'll be more active and able to do anything.
Don't let this dude convince you of anything, if you want to be a nurse, don't let anyone stop you! You've really got the heart for you, and you want to do it for all the right reasons!! I'm sure you can pull it off.
Keep up that positive attitude chickadee! :goodvibes

Don't listen to them. If you want to be a nurse, you WILL be a nurse! Don't let someone tell you otherwise.

I honestly believe that if you have a dream to do something and work hard enough for it, you will succeed.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Just keep remembering that.

Sonya don't ever let someone bring you down.
You can do whatever the heck you want to do, it's not their life.

Go prove them wrong. With your determination, you can do anything. Seriously.

Sonya, you don't have to listen to these people.
You can do whatever the heck you want.
I'm sure you will make an amazing nurse.

Ugh, careers counsellors suck anyway, what do they know eh ;)

Do what you want to do, prove them wrong :)

Seriously, you can do anything you want. I can just hear the determination in your words, so I KNOW you will become a great nurse.

Don't let anyone hold you back from your dreams. You're the only person who knows what's right for youself. :)

Wow, what tards.

No one can tell you what you can't be. Prove them wrong, Sonya!

They can't tell you who you can and cannot be, honey! Go for your dreams :)

Follow your dreams, Sonya. Don't listen to them, at all.

Sonya, just keep on persisting. It's your future, your decision. Not theirs.

Is it possible for you to start in the physical therapy area and switch over when you've got them convinced?
I mean it may not be what you want, but it's a little similar, and in the healthcare field.

Is vocational tech kind of like CO-OP or no?

Seriously, you prove those guys wrong.

Do everything in your power to become a nurse and the minute you get that job you walk right up to them and be all "So you were saying?"

I swear, I get SO MAD when I hear about people doing this. My parents were told when I was a baby, that because I had hydrocephalus I would never be able to go to a normal school, keep up with people my age and would more than likely have to live in an assisted home of some kind when I grew older because I wouldn't be able to take care of myself.

But did that happen? No.

Also, teachers would tell me I couldn't do things when I KNEW I could. My self-esteem pretty much went down the drain, because I would try and try and try, but to them? I would never be doing good enough. Not because my grades were low tho- but because to them I would never be good enough. Because of something I had NO control over.

Now I have a teaching contract with our school district tho. I basically have a job waiting for me the minute I get out of college.

</ end rant>

Really tho, you can do it. Don't let what ANY ONE says make you think otherwise. Chances are, with everything you've been through with that cancer, you will be one of the best, most understanding nurses anyone has ever seen. Because you know what these people are going through, ya know?!

KICK THEIR BUTT, SONYA! YOU CAN DO IT! :cheer2:

Well it's all great to prove them wrong and such.. you do have to consider your well-being in the situation. Unless your immune system is fit to be around sick patients, you're only endangering yourself by attemtping to become a nurse. If the knees the only thing holding you back, then go for it. If you've still got immune problems, then you need to make the smart decision.

It wouldn't effect me. My immune system is pretty good already, but not where it should be. I really, really, really doubt my immune system is going to be sooo poor in the, what, 3 years till I get to nursing school.

You do realize that saying that to you is considered discrimination to you due to a medical condition. They could get in a lot of trouble for that, and I say that you should fight them legally against this. How they know of your medical conditions, I'm not sure, but I think you have full right to fight against this discrimination. If you bring them to court, there is a huge chance that you'd win the case.

If they were so good at nursing (get your mind out of the gutter!) and medicine-related stuff, they would've realized you would've been better next school year :rolleyes1

Go get 'em, tiger! You're so smart, and you've got a good head on your shoulder. Cancer didn't stop you, so no way in hell are you letting a bad knee stop you, right? I understand the pissiness though, if I got declined a job because of a bad knee, I would kick somebody's ***. Okay maybe I'm not that bold, but I would be just as mad as you! You totally deserve to be a nurse, just keep working and pushing forward!

Thank you everyone. It's just the fact that she was an oncology nurse that really ticked me off.
