Oh, for HEAVEN'S sake.....

That is silly.

But hey - some kids will get to go both nights and get double the candy!

That is ridiculous.

In our area, we've always had the "porch light" rule - no matter on which night of the week Halloween falls. If the light is on, it signals the occupants are participating in the holiday. If it's off, you move on... after throwing a few rotten eggs at the home of the curmudgeons. (Kidding about the eggs, of course. :))

I live in the South (Alabama) and when Halloween falls on a Sunday, we celebrate it on a Saturday. We don't overlook it, just move it a day earlier. I like it a lot better because I don't have to get up the next morning and go to work. I am spiritual, but not very religiously...if that make sense and I don't see a problem with moving it from Sunday to Saturday. However, that could be because that's the way it has been most of my life. We have a big Halloween party every year and we make a big deal out of Halloween. I don't know anybody that says that Halloween is for the devil.

LisaZoe, we've also always had the same porch light rule in our neighborhood (although there aren't many porches).

I guess I think that Halloween is far enough removed from an actual "celebration of the devil" that I don't even think about it anymore.

I think the OP said "literal". :D

that's how it's always been in the area i grew up in too.

as for the OT, it's ridiculous to move the day, imho.

To each their own....
Reminds me of my neighbors. They are 'born again's' and their children were never allowed to 'trick or treat' or particpate in Halloween school activies, no matter what the day. Their church considers it honoring the evil and teaching the children to beg. Now, they're passing rituals onto the grands.

PS - LisaZoe, your little girl is beautiful!!!! I love her gown!!!

Oops, sorry. I really need to stop reading political threads as now I'm seeing political comments where there are none. I'll correct my original post. :)

We always have our trick or treating on Sunday and only during the day never at night. They do it because they feel it's safer that way. Personally, I think it stinks. That was always the cool part of Halloween growing up. What cracks me up is that our town of 3000 does this but Madison that is 20 miles away always has it on Halloween night. I would think the danger factor would be higher there going at night.

Oh Boy ! Friday I get to do trunk or treat in the church parking lot(I'm in the bible belt), and might have little munskins both Sat and Sun.

One Halloween a little boyabout 4 came to the door that had on an adorable costume. I greeted him with "Don't you win the prize" He started jumping up and down saying Mommie I won I won!!!!

I'm sure you can guess he got a triple hand full. lol

This is just plain silly. I'm a Christian and I see no problem with trick or treating at all. And where did that silly woman get the idea that trick or treating was meant to "celebrate the devil"?

To each his own, folks. We choose not to celebrate Halloween, but I certainly have no problem with those who do.

Since both our church and our children's school also discourage it, I don't feel so guilty for them.

However, if I did celebrate, I would not feel the need to move it from Sunday to Saturday just because it is the Christian sabbath.

Although from a practical standpoint, I would feel guilty skipping evening services to get out during the daylight hours if they were younger. :p

Just be patient with people because quite a few do sincerely see it as a day "for the Devil". Although I am not quite that extreme, I can see the point.

As long as they aren't screaming that your kids are going to Hell or something equally offensive, just respect their beliefs.

(and save me some chocolate)

I guess I have lived in Columbus faaaaar too long because this doesn't really bug me. I know we *never* have trick or treat on weekend (Friday night included). This year it will fall on October 28th for every city/town/whatever in Franklin County. No big to me.

Just as an aside, my city even moved 4th of July celebrations to another day if it falls on a Sunday because they do not want to have the parade interfering with people going to church that morning.

I've lived with it for about 20 years now, I guess it doesn't bother me when dates get moved around... not at much as it use to at least ;) I say to each their own though...

We celebrate it whatever day it falls on. We also have a catholic priest in our neighborhood that gives out giant candy bars!

That is the STUPIDEST thing I've ever heard of. Either celebrate Halloween or don't. What is the difference if the devils and witches are out on Saturday instead. I'm so glad I don't live in the Bible Belt.

I think it's personal whether one wants to celebrate Halloween or not, but if you do, I sure don't see why it matters what day you do it on. If you think it's "of the devil" why is it okay any day of the week? Talk about confusing the kids!

Having said that, it looks like we'll be celebrating Fri, Sat and Sun this year.( 3 day sugar high for the kids  )DD2's school is having their "Fall Festival" on Sat, while DD1's is on Fri, and our church is having a big thing on (gasp) Sunday! There will be face-painting, games, a moon bounce, hot dogs and nachos, and trunk-or-treat at 5pm to end it. It won't interfere with church services obviously. We may go trick-or-treating after the chuch thing, but we never go to many houses anyway, mostly just a few neighbors and our extended family (so they can see the kids in their costumes :teeth: )

Demonizing a celebrative children-focused holiday? That is really sad..... :(
