Ogunquit, ME

We are going to Ogunquit, ME next weekend for the 1st time. It will be DH and I with our 2 kids (DD14, DS9). Any recommendations on what to do/see, where to eat. Just looking for any info on the area. Thanks!

ogunquit is one of my favorite places on earth! if you are driving I highly recommend driving the coastal route, it is so pretty. make sure to take a side trip (its just down to road) to york and to nubble light. There is an ice cream stand called foxes right there, but save your money and go just a wee bit down the road to browns...its so good!!!!!!

marginal way is a beautiful walk

so much to see/do there, its just gorgeous. hopefully as nice a weekend as we are having this weekend!

we've eaten at several restaurants near there...barnacle billys, jackies 2, and the oarweed are all pretty good. my mil and husband love the lobster pound

We love Ogunquit! I second Barnacle Billy's, walking the Marginal Way, The Oarweed, plus the candy store in Perkin's Cove is awesome!!! We miss it, now that we live in Iowa and only get there every year or so.

Definitely walk the Marginal Way for the views. The main beach in Ogunquit is absolutely amazing. I've been all over the Caribbean but Ogunquit Beach is one of the best I've been to. This early in the season the water will be a little cold for swimming though. There's a little Italian/pizza place on the main strip right after you would turn right to head to the beach but I forget what it's called. The one place you have to eat, before all others, without a doubt, is Maine Diner. It's in Wells, so it's probably 15 minutes or so up the road, but it's amazing. One of the best diners in the country... great for any time of day.

I second Marginal Way, Perkins Cove, and the Oarweed!
the market right in the center of town has great deli sandwiches if you want something like that. If you head up to Wells for the Maine Diner there is a huge lighthouse store, if you like things like that.

Ogunquit has another awesome candy store on the main drag as well as teh one in perkins cove, you can also do a lighthouse cruise out of perkins to see Nubble light.

If you head down to York for anything there is a huge arcade right off Short Sands beach, there is also York Wild Kingdom, some small rides and a small zoo.

We will be staying at Parsons Post Inn on Main street. I was told we can walk to pretty much everything from there. I hope that's true but we will be driving there so we'll have our car.

Perkins Cove will give you a little of that. You'd probably really like Kennebunk and that's not very far... lots of little shops in a really nice setting there. I'd also suggest a whale watch maybe if you've never done one before and if the kids would find it interesting. If you're driving up on Rt. 1 you'll go through Kittery first which is a shopper's mecca... but more along the lines of huge outlet malls.

That is a fantastic spot. If its the one I am thinking of its on Shore Rd? and yes you can walk into town. there are all kinds of shops and restaurants on shore road coming into town to the main street, then main str has lots as well as the beginning of Beach st which heads over to the town beach. perkins also has lots of shops and you could walk from your hotel as well. you will also be right off marginal way the entry points are marked where you can start walking. there is also a trolley if you want that, but if you are staying where I am thinking you wont need it to get to the main st area of town. We usually stay at the Beachmere which is on that same road.

There is a trolly service that runs around ogunquit. It is sometimes nice to take that around the area. If you take a drive to the outlets in Kittery they have a great candy store. It is called Yummy's.

Shore Road from the funky interesection down to Perkins Cove has cute little shops.
Walk the Marginal Way.
Nubble Lighthouse over near York is cool to see.
York is actually a neat place too and not far from Ogunquit.


The Egg & I heading up toward Wells is a good breakfast place. The Cape Neddick Lobster Pound is good for lobster.

Barnacle Billys....the one time we went there they were out of lobster so we didn't stay.

There's a lobster pound right on route 1 heading toward Wells that's also good.

Of course, you're relatively close to Kittery for shopping and about 45 minutes south of Freeport if you are an LLBean fan.
Beachifre is nice for drinks/apps.

Be prepared for Memorial Day Weekend traffic on Route 1. It can move quite slowly at times, especially in the Kittery outlets area and between Oqunquit and Wells. It can also be heavy when people are entering the state on Friday afternoon/evening and again when people are leaving the state on Sunday afternoon.

A previous poster metioned Kennebunk for shopping. Kennebunk has a main street with a few shops, but Kennebunkport is really the place to go for shopping. Kennebunkport is full of small shops, all located within walking distance of one another. There are also many nice restaurants in the area, and some have really nice views of the water. Excellent seafood! It is truly a beautiful area.

If you take a drive to the outlets in Kittery they have a great candy store. It is called Yummy's.

Love Yummy's! It's not your typical candy store, that's for sure. It's more like a candy experience! Love that place! They also carry Maine sweatshirts, t-shirts and other "Maine" items.

I have gone to that part of Maine for years. I have managed to find the water acceptable, temperature wise, once in all those years. That was in July and the Gulf Stream managed to ride a little closer to the shore for one day. Other than that you can store frozen food in it and I doubt it would thaw. Kids seem to be oblivious to it and dive right in. (Make sure you make them get out when their forehead gets to be the same color blue as their lips.)

If you go on Shore Road headed towards York and the Lighthouse, we always had to make a stop at the Goldenrod Restaurant in York for Breakfast. They also have one of the most popular Salt Water Taffy in the area. You can watch them make it on the premises. Can't get any fresher than that. Most of the places mentioned for dining are great, but for my money nothing beats Lords Harborside (seafood) Restaurant in Wells Beach. It's right on the water and has been there for years. Family run, in fact, the same lady that greeted us in the 70's is still there. She doesn't seem to change or age.

Lot's of low key things to do. Go to Kennebuckport and take the coastal road and you can drive, within viewing distance, of the Bush Compound on the coastline. Who knows maybe George or Babs will invite you in for coffee. They never invited me, but I never voted for him either!

yes you can walk to the beach from there, it would prob be about a10 min walk tops. you will be right near the little side street that leads you to a walk path to the bridge at beach st then right over to the ocean beach. you could also do the trolley if you don't want to walk. parking is expensive right on the beach, so I would walk or trolley.

I agree with you about the ocean temps off the coast of Maine. I've spent almost every summer of my life on the beaches of Southern Maine and I can remember every summer there would be a handful of days where you could actually swim without freezing. It is not for the weak! Once you actually submerge yourself, it's not TOO bad, but I think it's because you're too numb to feel anything.

I live in the area and Barnacle Billy's is HORRIBLE! It is over priced and the food is terrible. If you go to Kennebunkport there is a beautiful lobster shack on Porposie cove and right next to it is a great restaurant that makes BB look like McDonald's on a bad day! THe name of the restaurant escapes me but it is out on the point and the lobster shack with deck is right next to it. That is all that is there except the ocean and the dock where the fishermen unload the lobsters. Prices are so much less than BB and truly the food is so much better. Also Kennebunkport has a store called The Best of Everything which has great prices on silver jewelry and some cute gifts.

In Ogunquit there is a small bakery right next to a candy shop on the main st. Sorry once again I do not know the name. I just go in and BUY. In the candy store the price is 25 per lb but if you want to try a few different types of candy they have a bin with ends of fudge and other candies for 1.50 each. It is fun to get a little (actually rather large bag) taste of all the different types of candy they sell. Also there is a great restaurant called Clayhill farm and if I am not mistaken ARROWS which is the top restaurant in the country.

The lobster pounds on route one are not great ! Best Bet is the one in Kennebunkport. It is off the beaten path and quite nice. Best lobster I have ever had and let me say I am an EXPERT. Let me put it this way my kids got me a 5lb lobster for my birthday and I have visited most of the lobster shacks in the York, Ogunquit , Kennebunk, Boothbay area.

Are you thinking of Pier 77 in Cape Porpoise? Pier 77 is a nice restaurant with excellent seafood and beautiful views of the water. Directly below Pier 77 is The Ramp, a more casual bar and grill type of eating place. Food in both places is very fresh and delicious! Here are a few pics I took there a few summers ago:
