Offsite hotel???

His will be our first time to Disneyland. We've decided that we don't want to spend the money to stay on site. I have been doing a lot of reading about off site hotels. I'm looking at the candy cane inn, Fairfield inn, and Howard Johnson. Tell me what you think. What is the closest? Which hotel has a good, family, middle class clientele?

I've never stayed at any of these, but a co-worker of mine stayed at Candy Cane Inn last spring. She seemed pretty happy with it. But, Howard Johnson has the really great pool if you have youngish kids.

From experience I know that HOJO is great for families but I have heard great things about all three. Each are within a very easy walking distance to the main entrance to the park, (5-10 minutes max) but Fairfield would be the closest. Like was said above HOJO has a great swimming pool if you are interested in that.

I would just compare price and amenities and decide what works for you. You can't really go wrong with any of these.

I've only stayed at the Hojo of the 3 you mentioned but they are all well reviewed here and I would be comfortable trying any of them. In order of closeness to the parks it would be Fairfield, Hojo and then Candy Cane Inn. Fairfield Inn is one property closer to the parks than Hojo. If you leave Hojo you would pass by Mimi's restaurant, then Fairfield Inn and then some other motels before reaching the crosswalk entrance to the parks.

Of the 3, Hojo is the only one with interior corridors if that makes a difference to you. I'm pretty sure they're also the only ones of the 3 who do not charge for parking.

As for our personal experience, my kids are 7 and 3 and they love the pirate pool area at Hojo and that is one of our big reasons for going back there every year. Rooms are always clean, staff are very friendly and helpful and the beds are amazingly comfortable. We've never had any complaints during all our stays there.

I'm a repeat customer of HOJO and Candy Cane and can highly recommend both.
I've found HOJO to be quieter and to have larger rooms (Bldg 2). Candy Cane has a pretty decent free breakfast and is usually cheaper.
They are both about a 10-15 minute walk to the DL turnstiles. Candy Cane also has a free shuttle.
HOJO has a 15% discount code - LKMC - available year-round and a 20% Entertainment Card discount, which is offered on a limited basis. Check the discussion boards on their website for availability. Both places have AAA discount (10%).
