Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

I played a demo version of Mario Galaxy this weekend. VERY cool but the graphics were making my sister feel a little sick. It doesn't bother me when I am playing but I might not be able to watch much (I can't watch Mario Kart  ). I am sure I looked pretty funny trying to turn my head so I could see upside down! This will definitely be under our tree for Christmas.

Zelda: Phantomhour glass for DS? :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 from our family! VERY fun game. It is very reminiscent of the original Zelda but has such cool features, like being able to write on the maps! Love it!!

I get sick watching First Person Shooters (Halo) and some of the stuff I've seen from Galaxy bothered me too, but I trust Nintendo. I think I'm the same way as you. it doesn't bug me when I play it, but I can't watch.

Yep, love drawing on the map. Can't believe they hadn't come up with that before now. I hope we'll be able to do it in the next console version too.

If you haven't played The Minish Cap, it's really fun too.

I had asked questions on another thread about which gaming system to get for my family. Several of you responded and helped me make my decision. The overwhelming response was the Wii. Harleyquinn even directed me to this thread so now I have all the answers - or at least know where to get them!

I heard that my local Best Buy has them in stock so I am hoping to head out tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Good to see you!!! :teeth:

Best of luck! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!:thumbsup2

Thanks on the info about Guitar Hero & Zelda phantom hourglass. The red octane site also has it for $89 with no tax and free shipping. Theirs says it comes with a bag. I don't know what difference it makes really.

Lego Star Wars comes out TOMORROW! :teeth:
I suggest if you're only going to pick up one game you go with a family game you can all play together like Mario Party 8. There's not too many games a 3 or 4 year old can do on their own. I definitely don't recommend Spiderman or Pirates for a almost 5 year old.

Now for mom and dad I suggest Mario Galaxy and Zelda for sure. I have a feeling your DH won't like much of anything on the Wii judging by his favorite games. Unless he is a big Nintendo fan too. There are very few games like GOW and Assassins Creed on the Wii. Especially those that aren't out on other systems with better graphics. I take it you have a PS2? Do you have an xbox? How big of a gamer is DH?

DH and I are not big on gaming. But, we know that our sons are being introduced to it at friend's houses and we hate to see them ostracized for not being in the "know". We used to have a PS2 but found we didn't play it much aside from me playing Kingdom Hearts and DH playing Asassin. So we ended up getting rid of it. We were hoping that the Wii would be more interravctive and something we could use for like a family game night to get us all up and having fun together.

Dude! i totally want the bag! I don't know why, but I do! lol You only 'need' it if you take your guitar out of the house. Red Octane was preselling it for a while with the bag, two face plates, a t-shirt, and a bunch of other stuff, but I waited too long to get it. Oh well.

Okay, then DH might be more into it than I thought! :teeth: The Wii is perfect for family game night. It's also great when the kids have friends over and things like that.

My only thing is that your kids are very, very young for a game system. Since you and your DH don't play, you may find the system sitting around until they are older.

But if they have played it at friend's houses they may be fine. Most 5 yo can play some of the more simple games, but they don't usually have the attention spans to play anything too long. The Wii has a bunch of games that cater to that (Mario Party, Rayman, Wario Ware, Wii Play...).

I just don't want you to get it and then be disappointed. Maybe wait for the 4 yo's birthday? Or better yet, next Christmas?

Is there a definitive source for game release dates? I've seen about 5 different dates for the same DS game.

OMG i am so pumped, I had been loking for a wii for friends and we found one on gamestop.com and she agreed to buy the bundle. Well it said it wouldnt ship until 11/19 an deverything was on first come first serve so i was really nervous but i got the shipping confirmation today and it will be here TODAY!! woohoo!!

This thread is very helpful! I finally scored a slightly used Wii over the weekend from Craigslist for $230. I wasn't sure what else to get my Dbf to go with it, but now I do!

I'll just tell you this now ... I know absolutely nothing about game systems. No matter if you're talking the Wii, GameBoy, etc, I am 100% overwhelmed by it all.

Having said that, we have a DS12 and a DS8 who have been begging for a Wii, especially DS8. I saw in the ads this past Sunday the XBox 360 Arcade for $279.99 and mentioned it to DH. He feels that if we're going to spend that kind of money we should hold out for the Wii and get family games. He thought we could get a Wii and a few accessories for not much more. I presume he's right? :confused3

I went to Wal-mart today and tried to price it all out but it made my head hurt. :headache:

And, which games are good family games?

Thanks!!

I was in Target today and saw they had The Ant Bully for Wii game on clearance at $13.98. I don't know if the game is any good, but for that price what the heck. I picked it up. There were some other games on clearance too, but I didn't take note of the names.

I first have to say I love this thread it has giving me so much info !!!

Now I have a question I cant remember seeing threw all the pages so forgive me if its a repeat.

I need help to find the easiest way to connect the wii to the internet? (I am not very good with these things) I have comcast internet (cable) and the computer is in a different room from where the wii will be. How would I connect it?

and one more question my husband wants the medal of honer-airborne game for the wii? I looked on game stops web site and it says the release date is canceled is this true and if so can any recommend a game like that.

Thank You
Melissa

I have spent a lot of time reading this thread.........whoa!
Are the Wii systems compatible with all TVs? Dh says ours has a "delay" and it won't work right. We have an HDTV 56". Thanks for any help, DD wants one for Christmas.

What game are you looking for...I may be able to "narrow it down" but as said before dates change ALOT.

Definately hold out for the wii..the X360 Arcade is a waste of money as it comes without the harddrive (WHICH IS 100% REQUIRED) TO save games on the 360 at cheapest it will cost you another $100.(so a total of $379 at the least before games+more)

It depends on if you mean family friendly or play as a family games.

Family friendly----
Mario Galaxy
Zack and Wiki
Harry Potter
Dance Dance Revolution
Guitar Hero III

All Family PLay----
Mario Party 8
WII PLay
Carnival Games
Ea's Playground

There are many more...give us some ideas of what your kids like....sports, art, adventure, ect.

DO you have a wireless router in your house? The wii has built in wireless access...if you do know the easiest way will be for you to get the wireless usb adapter made by Nintendo for the wii and DS...you can see a picture of it and read alittle about how to set it up in the wii's instruction booklet. IF you still haveing trouble let us know and we'll walk you through it.

Yes it is 100% COMPATABLE as the delay will not effect the game ..most hdtv delyas are only on HD imput..the will uses either standard Av or Composite cables...neithr of which should have any delay. Many of the games also allow for "delay" a few such as Gutiar Hero even have an ingame adjustment if there is delay.

I have no problems on my 50" SOny ...my guess is you should have no problems either.

T_H_K: I was looking for the DS game Build a Bear for DD. It shows in stock at amazon, but other dates I've seen were later this month and even December.
Thanks!

Thank-you so much for pointing that out! I don't think either of us realized the XBox 360 Arcade came without a harddrive.

Thanks for the suggestions on games too. I think it'd be nice to have a mix of both - some the kids can play and some we can play as a family.

I'm sure DH and the boys would enjoy sports games - football and basketball mainly. Maybe golf, if you consider that a sport. ;)

Thanks again, I'm going to go back through some of the FAQ and make some notes before we go shopping for one.

I do not have wireless router. The Nintendo wii that I have is for x-mas so I just wanted to make sure I had everything I needed. Will the nintendo wireless usb adapter by Nintendo work from a diffrent room?

Does anyone no about the game medal of honer --airborn for the wii ?

Thank You,

I picked up my pre-order for HSM Sing it last week at EB Games. It's a present for my daugher for her birthday so it won't be opened until the 18th. She is hoping she gets it for her birthday!

I was surprised the get it last week b/c the release date they originally told me was 11/16.
