Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

F-Zero X is a great game! I played that one a lot when it first came out for the N64. It's in 3D as compared to the sprite-based original, and it does have a multiplayer mode--up to 4 players. It's like comparing the original Mario Kart to the new 3D ones, same idea.

If you get that and end up liking it, I recommend trying out F-Zero GX for the GameCube (remember, they will work in the Wii as long as you have an original GC controller and a memory card). It's pretty cheap now at GameStop for a used copy ($8-$10), and is my personal favorite of the series. It does get very difficult, though!

Are the original GC controllers available wireless for the Wii? That's one thing we love about the Wii is being able to sit on the couch and not be tethered to the console across the room. If I can get the newest GC version cheaper than the older FX version, then I'd rather do that assuming I can find a couple of cheap GC controllers - and that they are wireless!

Yes it was called the wave bird ----It was the controller that started the wireless thing.

They are incredible hard to find now as, 1) they are not made anymore and 2)everyone wants one for the same reason you do.

Good luck finding one.

Are there no other options besides the Wavebird? How far can a standard GC controller cord stretch? We'd need at least 11-12 feet from the console to a comfortable position on the couch... :rolleyes1

Wavebirds aren't that hard to find, and I heard Nintendo is restarting up production.

It was pretty easy for me to find, now I can play all the GCN games...I am currently playing through The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

It's quite good, would reccomend :goodvibes

That's interesting. I haven't seen a wavebird around here in forever, but then again, I really haven't been looking.

It would be nice if Nintendo started making more. Thanks for the info!

 WOOO! We scored a Wii!! So far we are having a blast playing Wii Sports and Wii Play (needed that extra controller). Question for the experts.... does the memory card need to be a Wii SD card for gaming or will any SD card work?

Buy.com has a 2 gig SD Wii gaming card for $24.17. I want to make sure that is a good price and wanted to know if a gaming card is what we need.

Thanks! :yay:

Any SD card will work. That's a pretty good price, but I would check around. Our local computer store usually has 2 gig cards for $14.99.

You really don't need a memory card right away unless you are downloading VC games. The Wii games all save to the Wii and the Gamecube games save to the GC save cards.

I need some advice from people who have gotten Wii's. I want to get one for DH for his birthday next month. My problem is I'm home alone with a 3 year old and a 5 month old so running to stores frequently is nearly impossible.
How often are they available at online stores like circuit city or walmart etc...?
I haven't had any luck calling stores because even if they have one by the time I get packed up to go, it's gone and I can't get the stores around here to tell me when they might get a shipment in or anything.
So any advice for me? I should add I won't buy one on ebay either-I haven't been looking too long, but I can only pay the retail price.:goodvibes

Was visiting Cleveland this weekend (6/30) and found Wii's on the shelf in the Target in Solon.:cool1:

Near Geauga Lake.

OK Let me answer...a few TIPS:

1) Check the sunday ads((you can usually do this online saturday night)) for places like bestbuy, CC, Target, ect. If they have them in their ad, they will have them in the store first thing in the morning.((the stores have been holding shippments-so they don't get caught with the .."well it was in your ad" arguement)) If you see it get up early on sunday and make the trip to the store.

2) Game stores such as Eb Games, Babbages, Gamestop, Gamecrazy all get daily shipments of stuff...no way of really knowing when they will get theirs HOWEVER...Most new games release on Tuesdays or Weds, they are most likely to get systems in on these days also.

3) BEST bUy got a shipment of systems last tuesday while I was at the store...I'm not sure if it's a usual thing for them..but I'd check then.

4)Stores like Toy R Us...have so schedule...they get truck shipments like every other day..their systems come on those trucks (not ups as at the videogame stores) there is no knowing when they will show up...but when they get them they usually get 30-50 at a time.

5) When you call if someone has one ask them to hold it till you can get up there (then go asap--like a few hours at the latest) Many stores will help you out espically the game stores or toys r us...but you have to get it right away. If you don't make it before closeing that night they will 100% put it back out and sell it!

Hope these tips help...

P.S. don't be afarid to use the little kid situation also as to why you are calling and need them to hold it till you can get there...some people are suckers for little kids! :)

You need to find someone to go to the stores on Sunday morning for you. That is the single best way to find one without a lot of luck.

Some websites will list really big bundles every once in a while. Normally those get posted around here somewhere. There is also a couple Wii tracking websites that will send you an email if a store or website has the systems.

Good luck!

You were so close to us! We could've had a meet! Congratulations! I hope you had a nice trip to our city! :teeth:

Like the wifey said andy Sd card will do...

If you have a microcenter near you you can get a 2gb for only $14.99 at all times from them.(or 1gb for $9.99)

You REALLY do not need one at this point...files can not be saved to them.
VC games can be put to them..but you then have to move them BACK to the wii memory to play them...and Gamecube stuff can only be saved on GC memory cards.

The only things to really use an sd card for right now are..useing the picture viewing channel or useing it to listen to mp3's while playin excitetruck(THE ONLY GAME YOU CAN DO THIS WITH)

If you have aton of VC games it's a good way to back them up...but they are still only playable on your wii and like I said have to be moved back into the system memory before you can play them.

My personal Suggestion is save you cash and put it torward a new game.

Are the bundles usually a good value or is it the same to buy each piece seperately?

Wal-Mart has one for $540 with a bunch of stuff with it but I don't know if we would need all that (or what it all is!)

I am thinking of getting one for my 11 year old daughter. It would mainly be just her and me playing and I would probably just get her the sports games and things like that. Do we need extra controllers, cords, etc.?

thanks for any help you can give...

Hi! I was scrolling through some of the posts, and i couldnt find out how to hook up the gamecube controller to the nintendo Wii. Can you please tell me where to put it?

Thanks,
Jenna

I was wondering the same thing! I also saw a bundle coming out later this month, but it's hard to figure out if it's worth it or not...

Also, thanks to everyone for their advice! I didn't realize sale ads were online sometimes on Saturday nights, so I'll start checking those and see what happens!

I always suggest having 2 controlers so you can play multiplayer.

The bundles can be a good deal, but they can also be worthless to you....For$540 it better come with a TON of stuff!!! The system is only $250 itself so that means it should have $290 worth of extras....Wiimotes are $40..nunchuck attachemts(not needed for all games) $20....classic controller $20Games usually $50 for new...some of the older games can be found as low as $30 now. IF you have an HD tv the component cable is a must($30)...other then that all cables (standard av...and power )are included with the standard system.

I say you are best off buyign the system seperate with the pieces you want...unless the bundels have the stuff you want and offer a discount. I can't speak to the Walmart bundle as I don't know what is in it...but My guess is it is NOT worth it.

(as a side note....you can get Wiiplay for $50 it has some mini games-like wiisports games in length and comes with a Wiimote...so basically you get the game for $10 since the controler is usually $40)

No problem Jenna...to answer your question(and you'll fell silly you didn't notice this before)
IF you have your Wii standing up the top of the wii has 2 flip top doors...one holds the 4 ports to plug gamecube controlers into the other has the spots for gamecube memory cards.

(if your wii is on it's side then it should be the left side where the doors will be.

Some Industry wide Videogame news...
X360 has a 33% failer rate..Wii about 1%

Retailers Estimate Xbox 360 Failure Rate High as 33 Percent

By several metrics, the Xbox 360 is the most successful console so far of this generation. Despite the startling pace of the Wii, the Xbox 360 still has the most consoles sold worldwide and the longest list of games and exclusives. For a gamer looking for online-enabled high-definition gaming today, the Xbox 360 appears to satisfy those needs.

One often overlooked factor when considering a console purchase is reliability, an area that is becoming apparent where the Xbox 360 falls short. Anecdotal evidence is heavily pointing to Microsoft’s latest console as being significantly more prone to failure than what consumers are accustomed to.

Microsoft has said before that its Xbox 360 failure rate falls within three to five percent, what it believes to be well within industry standards. Internet reports from Xbox 360 owners, however, suggest that the failure rate is much higher than that.

In an effort to gain a more accurate picture of Xbox 360 failure rate, DailyTech decided to poll retail outlets that sell the Xbox 360 and with it the option to purchase an in-store extended warranty. Out of all Xbox 360 extended warranties sold, we wanted to know how many were claimed by consumers with defective consoles, thus giving us a more accurate failures percentage.

After contacting several retailers from various regions in North America, the responses were unanimous: the Xbox 360 is the least reliable gaming console in recent history. Current EB Games or GameStop employees who offered information did so under strict anonymity, as it is against company policy to reveal such information to the public. Furthermore, our sources confirmed that EB Games revised its Canadian warranty policies during early 2007 for consoles solely due to the failure rate of the Xbox 360.

EB Games held conference calls for its Canadian stores informing them of the new policy changes and revealing alarming failure rates of the Xbox 360. “The real numbers were between 30 to 33 percent,” said former EB Games employee Matthieu G., adding that failure rate was even greater for launch consoles. “We had 35 Xbox 360s at launch I know more than half of them broke within the first six months (red lights or making circles under the game discs). Two of them were dead on arrival.”

Interestingly, Microsoft has acknowledged that the initial batch of Xbox 360 consoles made during the launch window suffer from below average reliability. In response to an overwhelming defect rate of launch consoles, Microsoft agreed to repair all machines manufactured in 2005 free of charge, and issue a refund for those who already paid for repairs of launch units up until January 1, 2006.

The three flashing red lights – commonly referred to in gaming communities as the “Red Ring of Death” – is a sign of an Xbox 360 hardware failure. The sign is apparently common enough that Microsoft has added an option to its 1-800-4MY-XBOX support line that names “three flashing red lights” specifically.

As a result of the high failure rate of the Xbox 360, EB Games corporate nearly doubled the prices of its one-year, over-the-counter warranty. While the previous warranty would give a customer a brand new console in exchange for the broken one, the new policy now states that the customer will receive a refurbished console instead. The move was made because it was becoming too costly for the retailer to give the customer a brand-new machine, which still carries a store cost close to the MSRP. The price increase and policy change wasn’t exclusive to only the Xbox 360, however, as it also applies to all other Sony and Nintendo consoles sold.

The failure rate nearing a third of all Xbox 360 consoles was found at other retailers too. A Best Buy customer service department manager, who wished to remain unnamed, said that failure rates for the console were “between a quarter to a third” of all units sold.

“We see a ton of [Xbox 360s] come back all the time. We strongly push our customers to buy our service plans no matter what they buy, but it is especially important for them with the Xbox 360,” said the manager. “It’s a lucky thing for us that Microsoft extended the factory warranty to one year, because we were having a hell of a time dealing with the launch units. Now we don’t have to deal with those broken [Xbox 360s] until their second year, for those who have purchased the two year plans.”

In late 2006, Microsoft boosted the warranty of all Xbox 360 consoles to one year, up from 90-days previously. For gamers who are out of warranty, however, a replacement or repair will cost Xbox 360 customers $140.

When compared against other systems, the Xbox 360 is failing at higher rates than its current competitors and predecessors. Former EB Games worker Matthieu G. said that the failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for the retailer to consider revising its policies, and guesses that that most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3. Another EB Games manager, when asked if the store warranty was worth it, conceded that in the hundreds of Wii units sold at that location thus far, zero have come back as defective.

Despite the overwhelming evidence that the Xbox 360 is a relatively unreliable games machine, Microsoft officials refuse to comment on its failure rate. Peter Moore, VP of Microsoft’s entertainment division, said to the Mercury News, “I can’t comment on failure rates, because it’s just not something – it’s a moving target. What this consumer should worry about is the way that we’ve treated him. Y’know, things break, and if we’ve treated him well and fixed his problem, that’s something that we’re focused on right now. I’m not going to comment on individual failure rates because I’m shipping in 36 countries and it’s a complex business.”

Similar questions regarding the Xbox 360 hardware met with the man responsible for the design of the console, Todd Holmdahl. He too sidestepped the issue with the Mercury News, saying, “I would say we don’t have a high defect rate. The vast majority of people are really excited about their product, and that we are targeting profitability for next year.”

Asked differently about whether or not the Xbox 360 falls into the ‘normal’ three to five percent return rate, Holmdahl said, “We don’t disclose the actual number,” and “We don’t comment on that.”

Update on your bundle question...

IT is NOT a deal at all..infact according to what I chose I am paying $10 over what I would seperate.

let me give you my run down...
(automaticallay in bundle)
System $250
2nd Wiimote $40
Nunchuck $20
Brain Age Game $50

Choose...
(1st choice another excessory)
Nyco Charger station( It adds $10 to the cost..but it's one of the best accessories you can get)

Choose 3 games....
1)Zelda $50
2)Mario Party 8 $50
3)Paper MArio $50

my total cost $548.00...if you add up what I put above it's actually only $540 so they are chargeing me $8.00 extra...it would be even more if I chose a game like Resident Evil 4 which you can buy instore for only $30....

Just beware...Usually the ONLY place I'd consider a bundle is Toys R Us as they actually give you a discount ...from teh reatil price...

If you do a bundle just do the math before you fall for it.

Thanks for the info! I had no idea that you had to move the games back and forth from the system. I just figured we needed a memory card before we purchased one. DH is hoping the Contra series will come out on Wii downloads.

We don't have a microcenter but I will look for a better deal if we ever need to back up some games. :thumbsup2

Pretty sure it's on it way....I'll have to look it up for ya, but I swear I saw some info about the original Contral heading to the wii VC.((if you guys have a Nintendo Ds in the house--the next instalment of the contral series--is comming to the DS!!! it is designed like the classic game))

EDITContra III is out for download on the VC right now!
