Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

Bought it back in February and it has worked in the past, hasn't been played in a month or more.
When you put it in, it shows that WiiPlay is in, you click on it and you pick start, then it tells you to put on the wrist strap, then it tells you that the game disc cannot be read.

Anyway, problem solved, I called Nintendo and here's what they had me do after having me check for visible scratches(there aren't any by the way):
1)Wipe the disc with a clean sock or t-shirt(NOT a papertowel). First dampen the sock and wipe from the middle out, never in a circular motion. Then use a dry sock and wipe from the middle out.
2)Next turn the wii off and remove all memory cards(gamecube and SD) as well as gamecube controllers if they're connected.
3)Next insert the disc(doesn't matter if the wii is on or off she said)
4)Next, attempt to play.

Well, this didn't work for us. All their games are warranted for 3 months and ours is probably at 3 1/2 months or even 4 months and I don't have the receipt. She said that it came out on Valentines day so even if we bought it the first day it came out, it could only be 4 months old and they'd replace it for free, no problem. It was so nice that they're not too picky about the 3 month thing. She's sending me a label and box to send it to her in and I'll have a new one in 8-10 days she said. If it happened to be an older game that was definitely out of warranty, she said the repair cost is $25. She also said they don't actually repair them, they just send you a new one.

Anyway, they were very nice and pleasant to deal with and the problem is solved. I'll let you know when I get my replacement disc.

Isn't that nice of them! like the DW said...Nintendo Rocks!

Also for future referance...many stores offer game warranty's. For like $2-5 you can cover your game for a year incase there are any problems. I do not usually suggest this, but if you have little kids, who are prone to leaveing games sittingout where they can get damaged, it is a good idea to put the extra few dollars into it.

Now onto other news....
Buy Zack & Wiki Campaign 2007
Okay, you can't buy it yet, but maybe you can pre-order. And if not, you should at least start saving.
by Matt Casamassina

June 18, 2007 - Not since Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on GameCube have we demanded that readers purchase a videogame, but the time has come (again) for us to take a stand. Capcom has a fantastic point-and-click puzzle-adventure on its hands. It's clever. It's difficult. It will make you think. It's also beautiful, perfectly capitalizing on Wii's strengths.

Unfortunately, it's got a stupid name. Formerly Project Treasure Island Z, now it's called Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure. Uh-huh, we know. Bad. Really, really bad. Meanwhile, unless you loved the style of Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - and you should have - you probably won't find yourself wowed by the cel-shaded graphics forming the characters and worlds in Z&W. And there's no blood, F-bombs or dead hookers, either - all integral ingredients to today's most popular efforts.

But we're telling you, Zack & Wiki is fun. Really fun. Really smart. And really enjoyable. And we're not going to stop this campaign until you've pre-ordered it. Do it. Do it right now. What do you mean your local retailer isn't accepting pre-orders? That's no excuse for the truly dedicated. Start saving. Create a Zack & Wiki fund. And get on the message boards and spread the word. It's come down from the IGN Wii editors that Z&W (as those in the know call it) is the real deal and must be owned. As loyal Nintendo fans, you cannot disobey.

I happen to agree with him, just the little I have seen of this game it looks fantastic! Go to ign.com and checkout the video footage, pictures and writeups abotu this game...make sure those of you who like a challange check it out!

Wow, he's comparing it to Eternal Darkness??! You only play through that game like 6 times DH. Too bad it doesn't have zombies or weird aliens. lol

DH will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the highest number of players is four (I seem to remember a couple doing 8, but I think I'm wrong there). The system only supports 4 controllers, so you'll want to get that many.
As far as I remember, Bust-A-Move Bash supports 8 players. Not sure how it's done in the game itself, but pairing up on remotes doesn't seem likely given how past B-A-M titles have played. I'll have to check it out and take a look.

The Japan-released Puyo Puyo game also apparently supports 8 players, but four use the nunchuk as a standalone controller (still attached to someone's remote of course), maybe it's the same case here, as the nunchuk does have an acceloremeter, though it may not be as sensitive as the remote's.
:confused3

Stick with 4 remotes for now. :)

This is an interesting related article, however: http://wii.qj.net/Wii-can-handle-more-than-four-Wiimotes-/pg/49/aid/94407

I'm still searching...

Our closest Game Stop thought they'd have some in by the end of last week. Said they had a shipment on the way. On Saturday and today they said they don't even have any showing on their computer :confused3

I'm not in panic mode or anything, but I'd like to know I have this locked up for Christmas. It's all DS is asking for.

I'm hoping that some of you Wii pros will give me some advice. DH and I are planning on getting a family Wii for this upcoming Christmas. I missed the last batch and have no idea when the next batch will be released.
1. Does anyone have any idea when they will be available next?
2. Should we buy one as soon as they are out, or should we wait untill close to Christmas to pick one up? I'm nervous aout buying a system and games too far ahead only to find out that something is broken and the warranty is too old.

TIA for any help!

Availability is pretty random at this point. Every so often a retailer will still hold stock for an advertised sale, though, so keep your eyes on the newspaper. Frequently check stores in person! Phone calls will not likely do as good, since by the time you get there, the system may sell out.

I'd suggest buying one if you find one, if you are planning to purchase regardless. Demand still has a chance to slow down a little, but it will only pick up again with full speed once more and more people start Christmas shopping.
Even PS2s were selling out frequently last season (and almost every season before that), and that system was released back in 2000.

Nintendo's warranty is automatically activated at time of purchase, but it does cover an entire year. Nintendo has the best overall track record as far as defective units goes, so I honestly would not worry too much about that.

Zingela said exactly what I would say! :teeth:

I would actually buy one now and play with it before Christmas to make sure everything works if you can, but there have been very few problems with the systems, so you should be fine.

Definitely pick one up when you find one.

Not to much to add...get it asap!
The 1yr warranty is perfect.
Lots of retailers start allowing longer returns times in sept so if you don't find one until then.

-I Worked at Toys R Us for abotuu 10 years durring HS and college I can tell you if you want something for x-mas to get it by OCT. Most of the hot holliday toys start comming into the store in Aug-oct. Then they become hit and miss. But are usually easy to find before then.

The Wii is a different beast all together as it's popularity has not dwindeled at all since it's launch. Which makes it hard to keep production up and stock inplace...so It may just stay ellusive through this holliday.

So just By one ASAP!
Make sure you get a second wiimote and nunchuck for multiplayer.

Any other questions be sure to drop us all a line.

For everyone....

I'll be back tomarrow with my impressions of the Harry Potter Wii game I'm going to pick it up this afternoon.

Yikes! Now I'm nervous. We bought Giant Eagle gift cards for Toys-R-Us just to use for purchasing our Wii. (Hi to my fellow greater Cleveland Dissers...we're from Lakewood!;) ) Toys-R-US had a batch a couple of weeks ago, but I was in the hospital and missed it. DH stopped in at the store in North Olmstead and they said that all Wiis were sold out by 9:30.

I have no problem with getting to the store very early, but do you think that they will release a batch any time soon? The lady at the store told my DH that maybe they would get some in around mid July. Maybe we'll just have to find it where we can and use the gift cards to buy games and controllers?

Thanks for the help!

They'll get 'em at least the ones out here on the east side(mentor is closest to me-living in willowick) He been getting them pretty regularly.

Keep an eye out for thier ads. Unually if they are in the sunday add they hold a certain number for that day.

On a side note....I was in best buy today(also in mentor) to buy Harry potter and the guy was unpacking a fesh batch of Wii's!!!The first time I have seen them in the wild since launch day!! 2 of them sold as he was pulling them out. Not sure how long the others were there...so you may want to call around tomarrow to see if anyone got them and still has them.

Could someone who has played both compare F-Zero X to the original F-Zero. I've never played the X version, but we love the original. Can you play multiplayer in F-Zero X? Does it play fairly similarly? Our one gripe about the original F-Zero is that you can only play one person at a time. If two of us can play head-to-head at once in the X version, we'll definitely have to add it to our VC list. Thanks!

Thanks for all of the useful info! I'm subbing - as we are in the market for a Christmas Wii!

Circuit City had some in stock yesterday (online).

I'm going there now to check!

Thanks again.

It's been a very long time since I played F-zero X....If I remember correctly it can be played 2 player...Give me a minute and i'll look up my review on it....

F-Zero X (Nintendo 64, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Choose from 30 different hover-car racers, including updated versions of the Blue Falcon and other vehicles from the original F-Zero, and get ready to play one of the fastest racers ever. You'll speed to the finish line on tracks that twist and turn through the air, doing your best to avoid the other 29 cars on the track. If you're in a competitive mood, try to win a Grand Prix Cup, get the fastest lap time in a Time Trial or destroy the competition in a Death Race. You can also challenge three friends in the Versus mode. With five separate play modes, hidden vehicles and courses, and an excellent soundtrack, F-Zero X still represents one of the best racing titles to date.

If you find that you guys love this game also there was a version released for the gamecube(f-zero GX) that is also up to 4 players and prettier graphics and a much faster sense of speed and a ton of stuff to do in it.

Hope that helps.

ORIGINAL DOWNLOADABLE GAMES!....

UK, June 27, 2007 - Nintendo has announced that original downloadable games are heading to Wii thanks to the WiiWare Channel with the aim being to let developers both large and small distribute their titles on the service. Unfortunately, the bad news is that it's not launching until early 2008.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie explained that WiiWare is a chance for smaller and more creative games to be made available to Wii owners, with little or no risk to the developer. According to Nintendo the "remarkable motion controls will give birth to fresh takes on established genres, as well as original ideas that currently exist only in developers' minds".

Reggie added: "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit. WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."

WiiWare titles will be available in the Wii Shop Channel and, just like Virtual Console games, can be purchased using Wii Points. Likewise, a variety of pricing options are planned. Nintendo is set to announce more details on WiiWare, including pricing structure, at a later date.

F-Zero X is a great game! I played that one a lot when it first came out for the N64. It's in 3D as compared to the sprite-based original, and it does have a multiplayer mode--up to 4 players. It's like comparing the original Mario Kart to the new 3D ones, same idea.

If you get that and end up liking it, I recommend trying out F-Zero GX for the GameCube (remember, they will work in the Wii as long as you have an original GC controller and a memory card). It's pretty cheap now at GameStop for a used copy ($8-$10), and is my personal favorite of the series. It does get very difficult, though!

Wii STAR WARS!!!

UK, June 28, 2007 - When the Wii's motion-sensing controller was first revealed, everyone pondered how cool it would be to wave a Wii-Lightsaber around - probably while going "zwwoooom, zwooom, kzzzzzzzk". Now, it seems that dream is set to become reality this autumn.

Speaking at the Hollywood & Games Summit panel yesterday, LucasArts' Jim Ward tackled the tricky subject of what would it take to have a game that used the Wiimote as a Lightsaber, following a question raised by Newsweek's N'Gai Croal.

"We're all over that," said Ward, "and internally we have already played a lightsaber game on the Wii. It's a lot of fun, and we'll get there." He then added that the concept of Wiimote control was already in place in a game and "there'll be some stuff out this autumn - it's going to be a lot of fun".

It's possible Ward was referring to the Wii version of LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Trilogy, which is set for release later this year. LucasArts has previously stated that its Wii controls "result in the most interactive LEGO Star Wars gaming experience yet". Here's hoping E3 brings firmer details.
