Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

We wii wii wiied all the way to the hospital. I accidently knocked my 7 year old DD in the head while playing tennis with her. She fell to the floor but was awake right away. I feel so bad but she is going to be just fine, i just have to watch her for the next 24 hours.

She even joked saying that we aren't allowed to play together anymore.

OMG! I'm so glad she's ok! I always preach moderation with the Wii, but it's hard not to get really into it!

Everyone make sure all players have plenty of room! I know it's pretty hard for two players to play the sports games at the same time in my house, bc the living room is too small. Be careful out there!

Thanks for sharing your story, I hope others can learn from you!

Does anyone have Blur yet? Any review good or bad? DS's bday is coming up and I'd like to get a new game.

My boys like to play FIFA soccer and NBA in addition to Madden. We have those for the GC but they'll want them for Wii too.

Regarding Mario Party, what did you think of MP6? We got that one since it was new at the time and my boys preferred MP5, so do you think they'd like MP for the Wii?

I finally got to play pool the other day w/my son and I won the first game so we played again and we beat me pretty bad.

BTW - In tennis how do serve harder/faster? Like sometimes the other team serves up an ace with the player really jumping in the air, but I can't figure it out? :confused3

Okay here goes:
Blur is getting pretty good reviews. The Gamestop one is the lowest I've seen. The reviewers say its a lot like SSX Tricky for the NGC which was a really fun game. DH really wants Blur, but we haven't picked it up yet.

Get Madden for the Wii! It's super awesome if you've ever played the old ones. It's a completely new experience.

Ditto for MP8. You can't compare the old MP's to the Wii one, the controls are totally different. I'll be getting that one today assuming it came out on time, so I'll let you know once I've played how good it is.

To serve faster you have to hit the ball at it's highest point. DH will explain that better in a minute I'm sure.

Welcome to the thread everyone!! :wave2:

You didn't read the warning screen that appears that says make sure you have plenty of space so you don't knock someone out!
(im not kidding that screen is there in wii sports...it's not in those exact words but it's there.)

The vidoegame message boards I am on are a buzz with Blur being the BEST ssx since Tricky(ssx2). The one thign you need ot know...it takes a little whiile to get used to the controls and pulling off the uber tricks can be difficult. Players have suggested that you make sure to do the practice runs/lvls that are basically tutorials a few times and you'll begin to get the hang of the uber trick system.

I will be getting it just not sure how soon.

As for other sports games....Tiger Woods PGA golf is on it's way soon. And I am sure we will see Baseball/basketball/ hockey/ and possibly fifa within the next year.

The thing about sports games is that they usually release at the start of a sports season...Madden08 commming in aug durring training camp. Baseball is probably not gonna happen this year and instead be out in summer 08. Basketball will not make it untill fall when next season starts(usually novemeber). So "the main sports" may be a while before they show up.

Fast Tennis serve.... When you pull up onthe wiimote to throw the ball up when it is at it's highest point in the air you have to hit it. this can be done with a swing, a press of the A button, or as i have found a quick "snap" of the wrist. It takes alot of practice to get it to work. Even now I can only pull off one or two a game. Good luck!

Try a little compassion or at least some appropriate smilies dear. :rolleyes2 :crazy2:

I know you didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all brat, but you do! :scared: :p

Oh my gosh, I feel so bad for you and her!
I haven't hit the kidlets with the wiimote (yet), but I did knock the puppy in the head really hard about 2 days after we got it. The good news is she hasn't run in front of anyone playing since! LOL
Seriously though, I hope she's ok, and don't beat yourself up, accidents happen. We had to make rules about where we could stand because it can be dangerous.

The release of Mario Party 8 is not until June. Super Paper Mario will be released in April.

Yep you're right. I just found that info on one of my message boards. A lot of the game sites still have yesterdays date listed. Oh well. I knew when Paper Mario was coming out.

Oh well I guess DH gets to buy Blur now! :thumbsup2

I just checked and the FIFA soccer games don't come out until Sept-Oct'ish so hopefully by summer of this year it will be on the list of new games with a Sept or Oct release date.

I didn't check but I think the NBA ones are around the same time so that gives EA plenty of time to develop the games for the wii. :hourglass

OK, we finally broke down and bought WiiPlay over the weekend. We told DS11 we'd split the price with him since it came with a remote. It didn't get awesome reviews or anything but with the cost being just $10 more than a remote alone we figured it was worth it.

Our favorite? Tanks! Very cool little tank battle game.

DS11 also likes Charge eventhough it's short. He wishes it were longer.

I kind of like Find Mii...I think it's fun.

DH thinks billiards is cool.

Anyway, there are about 9 games on it and DS enjoys all of them but isn't super wowed by anything except tanks and charge. They're all pretty short and it's a great game to play when you have a group.

I'm just rambling on and on here...my point...definitely worth the $10 above the price of a remote to own this game but don't expect anything huge out of it.

You're not rambling! That's a very thorough review. Great job!

Anyone pick up Sonic yet? It's getting very mixed reviews, seems like they rushed it out. (I still sorta want it though!)

We have DS on rental right now. DS11 thinks it's "really good". He hasn't beaten it yet which is a good sign! He beats a lot of games in the first few hours and those are the ones we think are losers. He thinks a good game and says he likes "everything" about it. He wouldnt' give me any more info than that and I don't play that game so I'm no help. Sorry that's all I've got on it. But he says it's one he would buy so he must like it.

I was just looking at some release info for games, and I can tell you the EA is definately working on NBA LIVE WII to release next basketball season.

Yep, im gonna buy Blur! I'll give you all a review after I get some playtime in with it.

I think I might end up renting it sometime when I have some vacation. Maybe this weekend!

(Tell your DS I said thanks for the review! ;) )

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<NEW INFO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Nintendo just posted new release date for a few of their first party(made by them) games...
The main 2 to know about

Mario Party 8 will launch on MAY29th
Pokemon Battle Revoultion(The first online pokemon battle game ever!- and first online game for the wii) on June 25th

Nintendo will have a conferance today at the GDC I'll pass along the info as soon as I get it.

Rumor Alert!!!

Pulled this off of one of my videogame boards....In red you will find some info espically for Disney fans!

Ok so it's only a Rumor right now, but it sounds pretty awesome (for Karaoke singers)and promising for Online voice communicating.

I repeat this is only a RUMOR.

Get your singin’ ready.

Rumor Reporter has exclusively learned from several insider sources that Nintendo will be releasing a microphone peripheral for the Wii. This once-rumored accessory is already being developed in co-junction with several game titles, some of which was shown at Game Developers Conference and previous events. Recent conferences at GDC 07 also indicate that this is the first official public showing of the peripheral to numerous press outlets.

The news has recently been backed up by the announcement that Disney Interactive’s High School Musical title for Wii will be including a Wii microphone.

Furthermore, Rumor Reporter has learned that many more titles and experiments are on the way, including a brand-new channel based on the microphone’s capabilities. Karaoke singers should definitely take notice.

We recently talked with one developer regarding their thoughts on the potential of this new direction:

“Nintendo has been working closely with many teams as they plan to bring voice-over to their ‘touch’ based system.”

Despite all of this, this will not be announced during Miyamoto’s GDC 07 keynote. Still, Rumor Reporter will continue to follow-up this story within the next couple of days.

This could be awesome!

OK, so I did the plunge and bought my boys (5 & almost 7) a Wii yesterday. I also got them the Wii Play kit (with the extra controller and game) and the Super Monkey Ball game (was only $31 at Sam's Club.) They love video games and they currently have a PS2 and they each have a Nintendo DS. The Wii is really for the whole family but the Easter Bunny will be bringing it for them Easter morning.

Tell me I'm not making a mistake!

BTW, I found the Wii at Sam's Club in West Mifflin, PA. Check your local Sam's Clubs if you can't find it anywhere else :thumbsup2 Plus they seem to have some good deals on the games as well :)

Tell you you are not making a mistake???

NO WAY ARE YOU MAKING ONE!!!!
It's by far the best system I have played, next to the original NES. Go back through and read some of the thread you will see everyone here loves it.

Honestly I shouldn't even be talking to you since your the enemy!

GO BROWNS!
I jest!

Really though, no way are you making a mistake...great thing is you also can go back and buy old Gamecube games that they will certainly enjoy and missed out on by having only a PS2 and not a gamecube!

What info do you wanna hear about??? Those of us in the thread are always willing to help out and give you what ever info you need.

Thanks for the info! Although it is a bit suspect given the you are a Browns fan :rotfl: Just kidding - I know Brownies can be good people too (except on Sundays!)

Anyway, what games are the best for young kids and families? I assume Super Monkey Ball is good :confused3 (DS#2 has it for his DS and it is one of his favorites.) So, I can get gamecube games and play them on this? Any good recommendations there? What is this about downloading? I have a wireless router and if I can get cheap games that way, I'm all for it :thumbsup2 Is this Wii Play worth it?

I think we are going to keep it. I can't believe I just walked into Sam's Club and they had them in stock. I wasn't even looking for it but thought what the heck since they have it :rolleyes1

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...

HERE WE GO, STEELERS - HERE WE GO!!!

Where to start...yes Monkeyball is good, especially if they were into the old ones. Yes Gamecube games play on the new system, but you will need the classic controller or a gC controller to play them.

Wii play is definitely worth it if you need a second controller and with two kids you will definitely need one at some point if not now.

I think with a 5 & 7 year old focus on Wii Sports and some old Gamecube games (just take them to you local used game store and let them pick some old stuff. Mario Kart is awesome and so is Super Smash Brothers (we have no date for the Wii version, so hook em on the GC version.) Any of the Sonic games.

If you have to have Wii--Monkeyball is fine. DH (The Horned King) thinks they'd really like Excite Truck; it's a racing gamethey can play together and it's pretty easy to pick up and play at almost any age. Mario Party 8 comes out at the end of May and it's the PERFECT family game.

I think most of their time will be consumed by Wii Sports so my top 5 after that would be:
1. Mario kart (GC)
2. Mario Party (Wii, tho there are a bunch of old ones on the GC)
3. Wii Play (only for the controller value)
4. Monkeyball (since they know it) (Wii)
5. Super Smash Brothers (GC)

For more details about the Virtual Consol read thru the FAQ. The stuff on there is mainly very old things that I think young boys will get bored with, but watch the releases (you can check every once in a while from the Wii once you get it hooked up wirelessly).

HTH and let us know how they like it!

Thanks for all the help!

I'll definitely be picking up some Gamecube games when our local Game Stop has their buy 2 get one free promo. Sounds like I need to get another type of controller as well.

I'll have to check out the Excite Truck too.

Thanks again :)
