With the DS, it's not about price, or convenience, or even the number of great games it has....
It's about time and screen real estate.
I'm a 30 something year old guy, with a wife, and 3 kids. I have a LONG commute to and from work. The amount of time I have for gaming is limited, and ALWAYS occurs in my living room. There's no time I'm out and about when I'm sitting there looking for something to do...so portable gaming really isn't something I'm "hot" for.
Combine that with the fact I have 30 something year old vision. Staring at 2 small screens, in my lap, for anything more than 10 or 15 minutes at a pop leads to my eyes going buggy, and my head starting to hurt....and that's WITH perscription lenses, FYI. My eyes...they just cannot take the strain, Captain.
So, either I find a way to move the DS stuff to a bigger screen, in a place that's more convenient for me to access...or I don't play the DS games. I doubt Nintendo (or Square) cares....and I can live with it. But it doesn't stop me from longing for a change or a product I can find to fit my needs....unlikely or not. And when it comes to the rereleases and such, again, the VC is such a no brain platform for most of that content (and I agree....Square is one of the few companies where it might not be), when something "skips it" in favor of another platform, I'm bumming. But hey...at least I got most of my Phantasy Stars......I just wish they'd release the first one.
