There are a few older school plans that have folks running a lot of miles. While not for all, I know that Dave runs pretty much 7x a week.

I am humbled by Dave's tenacity, dedication, and fitness level. Perhaps I will get to that level someday! :)

I run every day, and I still don't get close to 80. I am stunned. And awed. And humbled by that kind of mileage. :worship:

Thanks Mamita and Coach. So a few follow up questions. I do not monitor my heart rate so is there another way to measure intensity. It's been 2 weeks, not sure if I can go by memory ;) I tried the elliptical for 30 minutes yesterday. It was an odd feeling. When I mentioned cycling, I meant the old school version of getting on my bike and going for a ride. I ride my bike to work (about 3 miles each way, not long) twice a week but haven't since I sprained my ankle. I was thinking of upping the distance/time/intensity. Usually I ride at a leisurely pace since I don't want to get too sweaty before work. Would that be okay? I was thinking of going for a longer bike ride tomorrow.

My training team did their 20 miler today in beautiful weather. I'm happy for them but feeling a little sorry for myself. They are so much closer to the goal. I hope I can make it!

Sure you can. Generally, you want to keep long efforts at an intensity that roughly equates to a 5-6 out of 10. Breathing will be at a level where you could carry on a near normal conversation. Stepping up the effort for the weekday runs would put you in the 6-8/9 out of 10 range (or hard to very hard). As you amp up, the breathing will go from conversational to a maybe a 4-6 word per breath int he 6-7 range down to 1-2 syllables per breath at the 9 effort. Anything over an 8 will have you really looking for a way to get off the effort.

Ran my longest ever today. 18 miles. I prett much wanted to die the last 5 miles. My first two miles were 10:45 pace and the last two were 14:30 pace. I'm feeling very discouraged right now. I did one lap of central park counterclockwise and then another clockwise. At 11miles I actually ran into a friend from HS! She ran the rest of the way with me. It was great having her. She was so supportive even though I had to stop and walk a lot.

How the heck will I do 8.2 miles after that??? The pain was excruciating at the end :(

At least it's done, right??

All you NYC people correct me if I am wrong but I seem to remember that Central Park has some pretty challenging rollers that are like mountains compared to WDW courses. I believe your extra 8.2 miles at WDW will begin by a pair of more energized legs because the effort needed for the previous 18 miles is far less than that required to run around Central Park.

Continue training wisely and you will do fine in January. :thumbsup2

Headed out to do my 20 miles. :woohoo: Nice and easy. It's pretty chilly out there so layers is the word of the day. My training has really fallen off the last couple of weeks. I was running 3-4 times, now it's just 1-2. I know I'm at a pretty good place, just need to maintain.

runrookie and john vn thank you both for your encouraging words! you both are so sweet. i agree that i needed to slow down at the beginning. it's so hard though being in the park (i drove down from the bronx, i don't usually run in the park) and not going a little faster when there are ALL those runners! you're right - the park is very hilly. i felt like i was always going uphill, even when i went in the opposite direction!

my friend who ran with me said that three laps around the park which is18 miles is harder than a flat marathon. yikes! i did 2.25 laps then finished the run going around the much flatter reservoir. i will continue to work on my short runs and hopefully gain strength because oh boy i am sore today!

bigdave 83 miles holy cow! :faint:

Well, we just finished our tune-up 1/2 marathon! Had pretty good weather except it was a little windy. The course was a little hilly but nothing terrible. I did PR by about 6 minutes (1:51:20), but I am a little disappointed in my performance. I hit mile 11 at 1:30 even and just needed to do a little under 9:00/mile to get in under 1:50 and I just died at mile 12! It was really quite pitiful! I walked at least 1/3 of that mile....I am pretty sure it was all mental and I know I need to work on this aspect of my running, especially before January. Hope everyone is enjoying their races and training runs this weekend!!

We had a Veteran's 3 miler race this morning. Happy to report a PR by over a minute, 26:56 (thanks to all this training for the 1/2) and 2nd place in my age group! Next Thursday is a 10k Turkey Trot. Anyone else running T'giving morning?

Great job! DH and I are running the Thanksgiving Day Race (very original name!) in Cincinnati on T'giving. It is also a 10K!

We did a very windy 8.5 today (planned 9.5 cut short due to MIL being on-call so we needed to get kids). That's the most I've done and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to walk tomorrow. :) It didn't help that we went bowling yesterday (something we don't normally do) so my left hip was already so sore!

Did a local half today and finished with a 16:20 pace. There were about 5 big hills so I am attributing some slowing to that. I am starting to get a little nervous about the full again. It seemed like I was making a lot of progress but I seem to have taken a step back. Please send some pixie dust my way because I am feeling like I will be swept for sure in January:sad2:

We're running the Turkey Trot in Detroit on Thanksgiving! I can't wait, it will be so fun :cool1:

I would try running more hills in my area. I started to get faster on flat land when I had been running so many hilly runs.

Planned a 14.5 miler today but from all the leftover branches on the sidewalks and in the streets, many I couldn't avoid, I rolled my ankle and twisted my knee. Cut it at 10.89 and walked another 1/2 mile before hubby rescued me in the car. I kept a pretty steady 12:10 pace until my knee started to hurt and then it went up to 12:22. :-(

This weekend I did an 8.57 mile walk on Saturday and 21 mile run/walk today. I feel a bit like I was run over by a truck right now but I did it. Saturday was 15:03 min/mile for the walk and today was 13:22 min/mile. I'm happy with my pacing but feel totally wiped out.
I haven't missed any long runs yet but several mid-week runs have been trashed due to issues related to Sandy (no power for 10 days with lots of downed trees and wires in our neighborhood made early morning and evening runs dangerous and no treadmill and living in various people's homes, etc.). A

Despite feeling pretty exhausted and sore right now I also feel that I could run the Goofy at this point and all my extra mileage in the weeks to come will only make it easier and faster. So I'm happy.

just keep plugging away and do your best! john vn just told me that my run was probably pretty rough b/c of all the hills so perhaps that's what happened to you, too. i've only done the princess half at disney and it really wasn't hilly at all except for the on-ramp. but you have a green army man cheering you to get up the hill. we don't have that motivation on our training runs! keep up the good work!

going from 12:10 to 12:22 isn't steady? lol! my pace per mile goes up and down by like 45 seconds each mile! you are good! sorry about the knee though :( bummer! hope it heals quickly!

Don't get discouraged. Some runs feel great. And some runs don't. But the ones that were difficult are the ones we learn the most from. It doesn't mean you've taken a step back. With two months until WDW, you have plenty more good runs ahead of you!

Did 16.5k today in two segments: first 3.5 with my learn to run group (they are on week 8 of 10!!) and then 13k.

I don't know what went wrong but after the first 9k of feeling good it just went downhill. I walked for a few minutes and thought I could run again but only made it another km before I asked DH to come fetch me even though I was close to home. It was dark and cold, and the temperature had dropped far. I hurt everywhere from my toes to my shoulders. I have never felt that sore except after the half marathons. I have missed two nights of sleep since Wednesday due to work, and while I slept some during the day it wasn't the same quality of sleep as being into bed all night.

Maybe, too, because it was my first long run after the half last Sunday?

I was wearing new shoes - the same model of my current shoes.

Or because this old bod ran twice today?

Maybe because of hormonal timing? I have read that women find certain parts of their cycle cause performance changes.

I have never asked to be picked up EVER. Well, I planned to go 12-14k and managed 13 so I guess that is good. Just disappointed to quit early, and can't believe I am sooooo sore.

Did my 20 and feel pretty good. I hadn't been down this route for a while so I had forgotten about the major hills. :scared: Today was the first time this year that I used my water bottle belt and I'm glad I did. I was able to stop at a couple of places and refill. I went through most of my gels, beans and chomps. The last couple of miles it was tough to get restarted after my walk breaks. I feel tired but not exhausted. My legs are a little sore but my compression sleeves are doing their job and I don't think I feel too bad tomorrow. And I have to echo this quote:

I also feel that I could run the Goofy at this point and all my extra mileage in the weeks to come will only make it easier and faster. So I'm happy.

Now it's off to the movies so I can do this: popcorn::

Thanks about the knee. I didn't want to injure it so when i felt the twinges even after taking longer walk breaks, i decided to call it a day and call DH Taxi service.

I'm trying to work on keeping a steady pace throughout each mile so I know what my comfort zone is during a long run. I don't like it to go up because then I feel like I have to be faster to bring it back down and then I burn out. I wanted my pace to be 11:30 for each mile but I didn't want to push that hard today.

On a good note, I am 6 lbs away from goal weight #1. The bad news is I gave myself until Thanksgiving to get there and I'm not going to meet my deadline. My punishment is no seconds on Thanksgiving. Only one REALLY BIG plate. LOL
